My worst fear
I found this on extremeskins:
http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blo...me=clayton_john "The Dolphins are scrambling for a quarterback and would like to get Green before the draft. But what if the Dolphins put a draft-day deadline on making a Green trade? If Brady Quinn slips out of the top five, the Dolphins could trade up from No. 9 to get him. The Redskins would be willing to trade the No. 6 pick. If you look at the trade chart numbers, it would cost the Dolphins a third-round choice to move from No. 9 to No. 6. The Dolphins would then have Quinn and the Chiefs would lose a trading partner for Green." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- In theory this is great, because we still draft high while getting back a pick for the Duckett muff. The problem is that we would have no Okoye or Landry at 9. No Gains Adams either most likely. It could turn into a nightmare scenario as far as I can see. I just imagine us finally valuing draft picks over star power only to pick a bust at 9 and watch as Okoye and Landry tear up the league for years to come. I think I might be too obsessed with those players, but passing on them and getting a 3rd rounder as insurance on who we draft at 9 sounds sketchy to me, especially with the recent news about Branch's legs. We'd be pretty much be forced to draft Anderson at 9 or go in a completely different direction. My ideal scenario would be that Quinn, Okoye and LL fall to 6, and that Minn or Atl trade up with us for a fourth so they can have their pick of the three. We could potentially still add one of those guys and get a pick. The worst case scenario with that type of trade is us having Quinn at 8 and that Atl and Minn take Okoye and LL. We could potentially move down again with the ND QB sitting in our laps and it would give us a lot more leverage than, let's say, Peterson at 9. Teams know we CANīT draft a RB. We COULD draft Quinn if no one offers us suitable value and trade him later to the highest bidder. Thoughts? PS- Man, all these possibilities are making my head spin. I'm probably putting WAY too much thought to this. I think I should stick myself into a pre-draft hiatus. |
Re: My worst fear
I think we'd be fine if we made that trade. Consider the following
Oakland-Russell Detroit-Adams Cleveland-Peterson Tampa-Johnson Arizona-Thomas Redskins-trade pick to Dolphins, Fins select Quinn Vikings-Anderson, Landry, or Okoye Falcons-probably Landry if he's not taken So at 9 we'd still have a shot of Landry or Okoye. And if not there's Jamaal Anderson (who's no slouch imo) plus another day one pick I make this trade |
Re: My worst fear
Hey Ten and Six. Because you are my bro I will give you this advice. Lay off the draft scenarios before you have a meltdown. I doubt we make a trade if we think we will likely lose out on the players that we really would like to have just to get a third rounder. The smokescreens out of Redskin Park can be seen from Fort Reno to Mount Vernon to Annapolis.
|
Re: My worst fear
what the heck are the skins going to do if they don't get Landry? tenandsix's head will probably explode. if I'm the skins, i make this trade
|
Re: My worst fear
No Meltdowns? The real draft will be here in a week.
|
Re: My worst fear
at #9 go with adam carriker. solid choice
and 3rd round go with S eric weddle or WR Jason Hill or a guy i really really like in Tim Shaw OLB/DE penn state. not bad for a trade down you are so afraid of... versatility with our line selection and either a cover safety or a stud pac 10 WR or a speed rusher to help with carriker whos better with the run |
Re: My worst fear
Scout's inc has Okoye 10th. Kiper has him 7th, Adams 9th, and Anderson 10th.
If this team passes up the opportunity to pick up a 3rd round pick to drop 3 spaces they should be banned from running a football team. They actually have had some recent success in the 3rd round (Dockery and Cooley) and they have holes all over the D-line. If they picked up a 3rd round pick and any of the guys at the 9 spot, all of us should be thrilled. |

Still would make the trade. We could go Carriker and a S in the 3rd round, or if Landry happens to fall to us we can take him in the 1st and someone like Mebane or Abiamiri in the 3rd |

Kenechi Udeze, Kevin Williams, Erasmus James ... come to think of it, with all those top draft picks going to highly touted D-linemen, Minnesota should have one of the best front fours in all of football shouldn't they? Judging by that, you'd think they'd lean towards offense. After Russell, CJ, Quinn and Peterson, who's the next offensive skill type player to go in the #7-#10 range? Isn't there a good chance that the Vikings could try to outbid the Dolphins for a shot at Brady Quinn? |
Re: My worst fear
You have it exactly right trend6, the reason is that there is 8 elite players in this draft. C Johnson, J Russell, A Peterson, J Thomas, G Adams, A Okoye, L Landry, B Quinn. After that there is a major drop off in talent. So trading to 9 for a third round pick would be dumb if you ask me. And forget about the draft chart, I think its the dumbest thing out there. I know the redskins are a big believer in the chart. That probably the reason we make so many dumb moves (TJ Duckett for a 3rd rounder). I would make this trade unless Miami gives up their 2nd round pick.
|
Re: My worst fear
I would point out that just because the trade value chart says a 3rd rounder doesn't mean that that's what the Redskins would take. Those charts aren't binding, they are just a guideline. If the Dolphins really want the pick we can put the screws to them. The pressure is on the team that wants to move up.
|
Re: My worst fear
on sportscenter yesterday, my boy john clayton said that a trade could happen between the vikings and skins so that the dolphins wouldnt trade up... wouldnt that be best case scenario? we move down one spot but get a 4th rounder or something along with getting the player we want

The four names I keep hearing rotating at the top of the Vikings list are Quinn, Peterson, Landry and then the "wild card" is Ted Ginn. They were high on Ginn a while back, not sure how much they still are. |
Re: My worst fear
I just feel if we moved down to 9, Landry and Okoye would certainly go 7-8. The Dolphins don't have nearly enough picks to compensate us for missing out on our "guy".

If you recall, Gaines Adams, and Jamaal Anderson were neck and neck on the DE scene. For some reason Anderson has dropped from a 10th-20th pick. That kid is a beast, while he reminds me of Javon Kearse, he reminds me of Kearse in terms of injuries too. If he can stay healthy, I actually think he could put up better numbers than Adams over his career. So I'm OK with trading down if we get Anderson. |

I just really feel these other teams would scoop him up first. So assume he does slip past detroit...someone other than Tampa is likely to get CJ, so they would take Adams...Atlanta would take Adams too. There are many teams that would take him...especially since everyone is so high on him being the next Bruce Smith. |
Re: My worst fear
We don't know what will happen, we just have a bunch of mock drafts to go on. Who thought Buffalo would take Donte Wittner at #8 overall last year, no one. I did, however, just hear a mock draft done by Mel Kiper and Todd McShay on ESPN Radio (they alternated picks). They had CJ go #2 to Tampa Bay who traded up with Detroit. Adams go to Detroit at #4, the Redskins Trade back with Miami to #9 and in return get Miami's 2nd 2nd Round pick (#60 Overall and maybe something else later on), so Miami could take Brady Quinn at #6. Then at #7 Minnesota went Landry and at #8 Atlanta went Levi Brown. That left Okoye for the Skins at #9. Everyone thinks Atlanta would take Okoye if Landry weren't there because Petrino coached him in college, but we don't know that. The real key is that McShay had Cleveland take Peterson over Quinn at #3. That will be where things really start to shake out as far as the Redskins are concerned because it will all depend on whether Quinn is there at #6. I emphasize that we do not know how this thing will play out and we also don't know who will turn out to be any good. I've jumped on the Okoye bandwagon myself, but after his Senior season he was probably only a 2nd round pick. His stock has jumped up tremendously due to the Senior Bowl and his workouts, he might be very good, but that is not assured, that is why you need more chances because you have more opportunities to hit on someone. Picking at #9 and #60 would give the Skins a shot at 2 starters as opposed to only one.

Well depending on what happened to CJ and Joe Thomas you could see him go to Tampa or Arizona. I'd say it would be unlikely for him to reach #9, but if he did fall that would probably mean Minnesota (former first rounder Kenechi Udezi started every game and go 0 sacks last year) or Atlanta (who lost Pat Kerney) would almost certainly take him, leaving Okoye for the Skins at #9. There are a million ways this could go, we'll just have to wait. |

I'll take that scenario. |
Re: My worst fear
All this talk of the draft charts and values for picks is just a bunch of speculating in my opinion. If quinn drops to the 6th pick and teams are interested enough in him there could be a bidding war and nobody can predict this. Its fun to throw out scenarios, but the draft is almost here so I'm content to wait and keep my BP down.

Re: My worst fear
Is it just me, or are people way too obsessed with the draft? I'm looking forward to September no matter who we draft. Until then it's NBA Playoffs and golf for me. I'll watch it between picks 1-6 but that's about it.

I haven't been this interested in the draft since Arrington's draft. Although, I'm betting that's cause we haven't had THIS high of a pick since then. ESPN is saying that we are likely to trade down and still get our man...we'll see. |

Nope. I'm a football fanatic so I'll be watching quite a bit. The NFL Draft is the only thing that wakes me from my February to August sports hibernation. I hate/depise/abhor/loathe baseball and NASCAR, not into NBA or Golf, so I can't really call myself a "sports" fan -- but since football has such a long offseason, this is the biggest thing during that time span that NFL fans have to look forward to. I think that's why it seems to get bigger every year. |

Re: My worst fear
First off you have to make the Dolphins pay more than a third rd pick to move up and take a QB, everyone knows QB's are worth more than position players and in higher demand, take advantage of thier need for a possible franchise QB and rake tham across the coals for Quinn, or tell them we will allow the Viks to swap with us and risk losing him, come draft time Quinn will be a hot item if he reaches us at the 6th pick! Now if we were only shrewd
enough to really make it work to our advantage? |
Re: My worst fear
I agree with Reaper on this one. At #9 we really don't lose much since there are a lot of 1st round D linemen out there and we get a 3rd rounder out of it as well. Only guys that go in the first 3 rounds have any chance of making an impact. Very few 5th or 6th rounders and below make the team anyway and at best are practice squad bodies or sent to the "minors" in Europe. 3rd rounders usually at least can make special teams if not honestly vye to start.

Adrian Peterson will be around at 6, and maybe all defensive players. It's going to be tough to find a trade partner. However if CJ goes at No. 1 to the Raiders, there could be a second QB who falls to us at 6. Russell could very well be there. I don't know what teams like Minnesota or Miami feel about him, but I just don't see a bidding war on the horizion. |

I think ESPN is waaaay too obsessed with the draft. They have had 2 hours worth of draft specials on EVERY DAY for the past week, and we're still 5 days away. I mean how much is there really to talk about? ESPN is annoying right now, and I'm SO SICK of McShay and Kiper I could puke. As far as this site goes, I think we're all just obsessed with football and the Redskins, and right now, as it relates to football, there just isn't anything else to talk about. I am checking in periodically this week to see if there are any new threads, but I don't think I can handle any more draft analysis. I typed a few posts earlier today, and it was excruciating. What if what if what if what if.... What if I just don't talk about the draft until Saturday? :insane: |
Re: My worst fear
This is kinda of off topic but I was just reading a thread on ES and someone said that they heard Dan Patrick say that the skins are the favorite to get CJ.(they are all freekin out) But anyways I was thinkin about how it would even be possible to get CJ and it seems that next year's first would have to be inculded. Does anyone think that it's possible the FO doesnt mind getting rid of this pick because they expect Bett's stock to continue to grow this season and plan to deal him next year for either a late 1st or early 2nd ? (most definitely the latter)
