D. Blaylock

could help on kickoff returns and a good 3rd down possibility if portis and betts and cartwright get hurt

Not sure where we'd have room for him at this point.

I just read that. Exactly, where could we possibly have the space......? Pratice squad.

Re: D. Blaylock

can't be on the practice squad since he is a veteran. He doesn't fit unless they are looking to replace rock. BAD IDEA!!

Re: D. Blaylock

Just a move to beef up camp competition. Rock's not a given to make the roster, if Blaylock can outperform him on special teams, then we've got to keep Blaylock.

I would prefer to keep Rock instead.. Even if Baylock performs better than him because Rock is a true 'Skins.. I want to keep the cores of 'Skins..

Honestly I want the best players on the field for the Skins, none of these true shit. The core skins have been losers since 91.

Re: D. Blaylock

Yeah... Rock only set the single season return record for the skins last year... f 'em...

;)

Re: D. Blaylock

I too would prefer to keep Rock, but Blalock was a pretty solid change-up back with the Chiefs. He didn't do so well with the Jets, but he's worth a look.

That deserves it's own thread. He is the man-crush going to be on THIS year?

Sure, just dump one of the best return men in the NFL last year. Great idea.

there should only be a handful of positions that are sewn up. running back and kick returner should be 2 of them

I agree. We carried 4 or 5 RBs last year. He was a good backup for for Priest Holmes in KC. He didn't contribute for the Jets b/c he broke his foot early in the season. He's only 27. Give him a shot.

Yeah not sure where Blaylock would fit on the roster, unless of course he beats out Rock.

Re: D. Blaylock

he is here to teach as like a player-coach and a special teams player thats it.

Re: D. Blaylock

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Blaylock pushes Rock for a spot. He's better than it seems people are giving him credit for and he's one of Saunders' boys. Rock is a damn fine #3 RB, a solid special teamer, and a "core Redskin," but Blaylock is probably more talented and a good teamer too.

diehardskin2982 05-04-2007 05:21 PM

Re: D. Blaylock

couldn't Rock also move back to FB and become depth for that position?

freddyg12 05-04-2007 05:29 PM

Re: D. Blaylock

This is tough, cause I value Rock's contribution on spec. teams, but let's be real - do you think Rock is a good nfl rb? He made it initially as a fullback. His fumbles haven't helped matters thats for sure.

I think 3rd string rb may be the most vital 3rd string position on our roster, given the amount of touches the 2nd stringer gets, & that both Portis & Betts have had their share of injuries.

I liked this kid, I think he was real close.

Re: D. Blaylock

Ok Blaylock may have done very well in Saunders system when he played for KC and that is the only reason I can guess he would come to our mini camp. He's a vet. Teams are looking for the 1,2 punch. I'm sure he could find some team somewhere that needs a second RB but he comes here where we have....what 3 or 4 already? I'll be honest with you I have been hoping we drop Cartwright from the fold. I know, I know he's a true Redskin through and through but every year he never seems to move up the RB chain of command. He's a glorified kick returner. He does a good job...but when asked to step in as a RB I was not impressed. Now I'm rooting for the under dog. The "lets get some youth in here" cheering fan. I'm actually rooting for Marcus Mason(RB). I know he's unproven. I know he's from a small school. But when you see his highlights(and they are only highlights. No bad runs which we all know there had to be) I can't help but like the kid. He looks like he gets shot out of a cannon. He finds the holes and is in top gear in seconds. Almost like a younger Clinton Portis. I'm rooting for the underdog.

Re: D. Blaylock

SBXVII,

Although I like Blaylock, I'm also a big fan of Rock. Although his most memorable play of late was his kick return for a TD against Dallas last season, I think he's more than a glorified kick returner. He's looked good when he's gotten the chance to carry the ball, although that hasn't been very often. The last time he carried more than 5 times in one game was against St. Louis, where he racked up over 100 yards on 9 carries for a 13+ yard average (higher than Portis' average against the same team on the same day). Moreover, he was a decent change-up back in the Spurrier days.

Re: D. Blaylock

Wow, you guys are too nice to Rock. He's a fan favorite because he works hard for his stature, but he is nothing special.
Like someone else pointed out, core redskins mean nothing to me since we are still in the worst 15 year span in the history of the Redskins. Whatever it takes to turn this around, I'm all for it.

Re: D. Blaylock

If Blaylock can play special teams, I see no reason why we can't keep 4 backs.

The salary cap might prevent him from ever winning the Super Bowl though.

But that doesn't include Sellers or Broughton does it? How many running backs and full backs will they keep on the roster?

I like Rock too but, one of the reasons he set the record was because the defense was so bad and let other teams have their way with them and score points, forcing lots of return opportunities for Rock.

I'm just say this to get it out of the way, because I know someone will bring it up. Just keep in mind, I don't really agree with this, I just know it will inevitably be brought up. Here goes...

Getting Blaylock gives us the flexibility now to trade Betts and seek help on the D-line.

Don't we have to eat the 2 million roster bouns we gave him if we deal him in addition to his entire 5 million signing bonus?

Good point.

You can't rule anything out at this point.

JLC mentioned that the Skins coaches definitely are not 100% content with the defensive line as is.
Contrary to what some shills would have you believe, there is stil a definite and well-accpeted need along the D Line among the staff. Obviously, Coach Joe and the gang don't come right out in front of cameras and say what's still flawed with their team, and of course they would not publicly speak ill of their work this offseason, but that's where reporting and critical thought come in. Seems easy enough to grasp, but, alas, for some who love nothing more than to puff on the team's corproate cigar, well
Hmmm, seems like another pot shot at ES. LOL

Rock stays. Blaylock on the market now soesn't say much about what he brings to the table.

I don't believe for one minute Betts is going anywhere, especially for Blaylock. If we end up with Blaylock it will be for low cash and depth only.

Looks like Blaylock has already signed and JLa thinks theres a 99% chance that the TE Zach Hilton signs.

I see your point, but if I were coaching this guy would be a dream... from a 245lb fullback/ short yardage guy (who was like 11/13 wasn't he???) to a 215lb halfback who does whatever you ask him..

to a freaking kick returner??? this guy has done anything the team needed him to do and he is a great FOOTBALL player... there are plenty of other guys on this team who don't pull their weight and are just here to make a check that would need to go first...
