Eddie George

Is anyone else keeping their fingers crossed that he doesn't sign with the cowboys or eagles? I know he's got a lot of mileage on his wheels, but I know I sure as heck wouldn't count him out just yet.

That Guy 07-21-2004 08:17 PM

he's still getting 30 touches a game right? that's a lot for someone his age...

skins009 07-21-2004 08:36 PM

Eddie is done, i watched him play a lot last year. He's lot two steps not one. Don't worry about that guy.

itvnetop 07-21-2004 08:38 PM

he was the sole offensive weapon for his first four or five seasons when the Titans didn't have anyone to throw to... he would carry upwards of 35+ every game where defenses knew he was getting the rock. his shelf life was considerably shortened after his first couple of seasons.

Riggo44 07-21-2004 08:46 PM

I hope he signs with the Cowboys or Eagles!! George's best years are behind him!! He would only eat up cap space!!!

SmootSmack 07-21-2004 08:48 PM

I love Eddie George, he's a warrior. But the name Emmitt Smith comes to mind when I think of George now and I'm talking about Arizona Emmitt not Cowboy Emmitt

SeasonTicketHolder 07-21-2004 09:46 PM

Eddie George IMO is the most overrated player in the NFL. He'll carry the ball 350 times a year and get about 1040 yards. I know he's getting older and has lost a few steps, but I still can't stand him.

jdlea 07-21-2004 10:03 PM

In the first few years Stephen Davis was the starter for the Skins the top 3 rushers were Stephen Davis, Eddie George, and Edgerrin James (for yards over 3 seasons). He used to be a great back, but the Titans used him up.

That Guy 07-21-2004 10:39 PM

that's why champ decided to go the CB route i guess... he said the RBs burn out way too fast. He also said jacobs was the best skins WR... I'm hoping thats true too.

skinsfanthru&thru 07-21-2004 11:18 PM

I hope u guys r right, but we've heard about other guys being washed up before and they go to the right situation and they're top quality performers again. Plus for a guy who is "overrated" and "washed up" he sure did a hell of a job last year, especially in the playoffs against the ravens with a seperated shoulder I believe it was. He may not be the back he was 5-6 years ago, but I still sure as hell would rather not see him in an eagles or cowboys jersey.

skinsfanthru&thru 07-21-2004 11:22 PM

maybe champ just didn't want to worry about all the extra weights and workouts required to bulk up enough to consistently play rb.

PSUskinsfan11 07-21-2004 11:23 PM

I hope he doesn't sign within the NFC east. Although I agree that his best years are behind him I do think he could go somewhere with another good back where he wouldn't have to carry 30+and do some serious damage, similar to the Davis with Foster in Carolina. Plus I still can't get the image of him trucking Ray Ray when they played the Ravens last year. I think with the motivation he has now he will create some problems if teamed with a young solid back like Westbrook or Jones.

I think thats a little bit different because emmit has been in the nfl 6 more years than george and smith went from playing behind once of the best offensive lines(I hate having to admit that), to playing behind a line that seemed to make last years blocking by the skins look like it was all-pro quality, lol.

Daseal 07-22-2004 12:29 AM

Did you guys watch George in that crucial playoff game last year? Can't remember which one, but he showed real heart. I love the guy, but he's about done.

That Guy 07-22-2004 01:11 AM

he's been released (asked to be cut loose and the titans agreed). he would like to be picked up by tampa, dallas, or philly.

heard this on comcast sports night a few minutes ago... also we've picked up something brewer, TE that played on the falcons... sorry i can't remember the specifics, I wasn't paing attention... do we really need another TE???

Daseal 07-22-2004 07:21 AM

Philly has Westbrook and buckhalter, they won't pick him up

PSUskinsfan11 07-22-2004 07:49 AM

Philly is his home town and they have picked up all the pieces they believe are missing to make a super bowl run so maybe since he doesn't have much left he would go there and sign for a few years at a low money contract with alot of incentives similar to what the Titans wanted to give him.

MTK 07-22-2004 09:06 AM

If he's used correctly I think he can still be a valuable contributor for someone.

He's not an every down back anymore, but if he's used in a limited role and sees 10-15 touches per game he can still be effective. I wouldn't want to face him simply because the guy is a warrior and always comes to play.

You can bet he's going to play this season with a chip on his shoulder too.

BleedBurgundy 07-22-2004 03:06 PM

I'm just glad that we're not the kind of team who would ever invest a lot of money into an over the hill former pro bowler based solely on name recognition.*

*I spent the last few years in a coma.

BossHog 07-22-2004 03:43 PM

I'm in favor of him signing with PHI or DAL. He's on the downslide.

Redskins_P 07-22-2004 04:30 PM

I just read that Dallas would not be interested in George. I think he's going end up in Philly.....

MTK 07-22-2004 06:46 PM
I just read that Dallas would not be interested in George. I think he's going end up in Philly.....
I heard Ed Werder on ESPN radio a little while ago saying that a deal with George and the Cowboys is very close to being done.

I know a lot of people want to write him off, but I'm tellin' ya, George is going to be out to prove the Titans wrong. In a platoon type situation I think he can still be very valuable, especially when your only other option is an unproven rookie.

That Guy 07-22-2004 07:38 PM

i don't think he'll prove the titan's wrong. They know he can still help win games, they just don't think his production met his salary expectations. And I bet he'll get less money in dallas than he could has with the titans...

skinsfanthru&thru 07-22-2004 10:41 PM

he's gonna get the same base salary but there will also be incentives in the contract to possibly bump it up. plus tennessee's offer was essentially a one year offer and he wanted atleast a 2-3 year deal.
I hope all u eddie george-doubters r right, but I have a pretty strong feeling u'll all be eating some crow come the end of this season. plus what better rb on the market could the cowboys find to help tutor their rookie jones? this could help out the cowboys in multiple ways and this would definitely help their main weakness.

That Guy 07-22-2004 10:49 PM

i don't doubt george, but i don't think he's nearly as good as he was or as scary as say... portis...

sportscurmudgeon 07-22-2004 11:14 PM

I have to admit that the people who post here confuse me more than once in a while.

George is "over the hill" and will "eat up cap space" and isn't worth the time of day. FYI, one reported offer to him is a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum with incentives that might take the contract value up to $1M

On the other hand, Rock Cartwright is a valuable commodity.

Assuming that Cartwright and George will both be "fill-ins" this year - and remember we are only talking about "this year" because it is unlikely that any team will give George a long term deal with a big signing bonus that would have any cap implications - why is Rock the better running back?

Should the Skins sign George? No. They are already well stocked with people who can give Clinton Portis a rest for a series or two a game.

Is George the same back he has been for the past 5 seasons? Not even close.

Is George such a ridiculous signing by an NFL team that they should worry that they will be compared to the Skins for signing Deion or Jeff George? I doubt it.

Just a GUESS, but I THINK he'll wind up in Dallas when all is said and dong.

SmootSmack 07-22-2004 11:28 PM

I don't know if anyone is necessarily saying that Rock is the better back. I think what is being said is that George's best days are behind him and what Rock has is upside and the promise of a solid future in the NFL

Duffman003 07-23-2004 06:37 AM

I wouldn't like going against Eddie for two games a year. He is old and probably way past his prime but he is a warrior. The postseason game against Baltimore he had a good game against a team who probably has the best defense in the league. He would get drilled and come back and destroy someone else or get drilled again. I just remember the times he and Ray Ray would collide and they would get up and start yelling at each other. There aren't too many players who don't get flustered after getting hit by Ray Ray.

That Guy 07-23-2004 08:04 AM

latest news is he's going to dallas for the same offer he refused to accept from the titans, but it'll probably end up as two years instead of one... so, we'll see exactly how good he is twice this year i guess...

BrudLee 07-23-2004 08:21 AM

The impending Eddie George signing by Dallas reminds me of another (more expensive) signing a few years ago.

Deion Sanders.

One of the stated reasons we went so hard after Deion was that we didn't wan't to see him with a division rival. If Dallas signed him we would face him twice a year again, and that was too much.

With Dallas "on the rise", I think they can't stand to see Philadelphia improve - which the George signing would do for that team. I think George helps the Cowboys (who need to work their rookie) less than it helps the Eagles (who would complete their backfield committee), but the Cowboys don't want the Eagles any better, so they are paying.

Either way, if our defense is up to par, the signing shouldn't hurt us too badly. George is a three yard per carry back, who has durability concerns.
