Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
According to Sportstalk 980 Springs and Taylor missed the OTAs today. It looks like the days of having Taylor at a discount are over. They need to resolve this before it becomes a bigger problem. As far as Springs, it should not be a big surprise considering their treatment of him. Hopefully he is just sending a message and does not want to leave.
The time to take care of our most talented player is now. EXTEND SEAN TAYLOR! |
Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
Did they say Taylor's absence was salary related?? I would think if he turns in a better year this season (which given the improvements in the LBs and secondary seems like a certainty) he'd have a better bargaining chip for a bigger contract. Springs' absence doesn't surprise me one bit.

They didn't give any detail but since he has been unhappy with his contract starting with the second that the ink dried , it is a pretty safe assumption. |

AND he has Rosenhaus as an agent. I remember when he was initially unhappy with the contract, but the whole gun charge thing shut him up. |

From KFFL ...
Redskins | Gibbs changes offseason policy Tue, 8 May 2007 16:02:11 -0700 Joseph White, of The Associated Press, reports <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/37/nfl">Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs has decided to change the policy he has used for a long time. Gibbs made all of the team activities and practices voluntary until the mandatory minicamp in June. Gibbs said he would try anything to get an improvement from the 5-11 record in 2006. Some of the players who took advantage of the time off include RB Clinton Portis, FS Sean Taylor, WR Santana Moss and WR Brandon Lloyd. No need to be making it into a big drama when the boss says its ok. |

I clipped this from an article in the Post yesterday: Organized Team Activity The Redskins will begin their first "Organized Team Activity" practices tomorrow, and will conduct weekly sessions culminating with a minicamp June 15-17. The OTAs are technically voluntary, but the team places a premium on them and after Gibbs allowed veterans to work out away from Redskins Park in March and April, the implicit expectation is that everyone will participate. ------------------------------ So I would say Taylor's absence is pretty significant. |

extension please

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
I wouldn't be so quick to assume it's a contract issue.
|
Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
why else wouldnt he be here. also he should have an extension because he is one of the best safties and should be paid accordingly

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
Does he, or Drew, really think it's a good idea to try to demand a new contract after a relatively lousy season? I know he made his first ProBowl, but that was as an alternate (hell, Romo and Vince Young "made" the ProBowl).
I'd say he as to come out and perform well this season in order to start making demands. |

Drafting Landry wasn't exactly a "vote of confidence". He knows that he is one of the most popular players and arguably the best player on the team. He deserved more money and I don't blame him for using his leverage. He certainly won't have more leverage next year when Landry has a year in the system under his belt. |
Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
I'm not going totally against the idea that it's contract related but there is a chance that maybe "grandma is sick" or "Uncle Harvey is in the hospital" or "Dad fell down the stairs" or....or....or....or....

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
All of this is speculation based on no facts. Bottom line is that they are not mandatory activities and he doesn't have to be there. I believe in giving the players an actual offseason to recharge their batteries. My opinion is that this is nothing to get twisted about.

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
There are a lot of reasons why he might not be there.
1) Working out in Miami, every year we hear people complaining that the U guys are down there working out. 2) He wants more money, he got hosed on his rookie contract and I can't blame him. Why not lock him up now. 3) They're optional, and he decided not to show. Not a big deal, if he starts missing minicamp or comes begrudgingly then we have a problem. 4) Let the Rosenhaus bashing continue. It's not like this guy is probably the agent that has more clients than anyone else in the NFL. 99% of his deals get done without a hitch. Let's also remember that Danny and Rosenhaus like each other and do business often. London Fletcher, Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, and Sean Taylor all use Rosenhaus. Stop watching ESPN and thinking he is always like this. It's important to remember one thing, the agent works FOR the player, not the other way around. |
Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
He has barely been to OTA's since he got into the NFL. Last season they said he had perfect attendance and last year was his worst, so I don't think they help all that much. He's missing a bunch of walk throughs, when he's late to training camp I'll care. Until then, he might be upset with his contract, he might not. Until I hear some facts about it, I'm not going to freak out.

grim, what was the way the redskins treated springs? i think they have been more than fair with him

Didnt Taylor miss them 2 years ago. And everyone was like WTF mate, and its just because he was working out on his own in MIA. Just leave him alone and stop making assumptions. Sheesh, people just want gossip during the offseason. |

I really don't think this should be such a big surprise, to anyone. NO BIG DEAL!

I am pretty sure Taylor has never shown up for OTA's, so i'm not to worried about this.

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
grim, what was the way the redskins treated springs? i think they have been more than fair with him
This is my opinion but this is why I think he has been treated unfairly: Springs has been a leader in the locker room the whole time that he has been on the team. He has never been in trouble. He participates in the community, he shows up on the local Redskins shows and he represents the team well on the various media outlets. He has restructured his contract, in the past, when the team needed salary cap relief. Last year, he hurt his groin. He rushed back to get back on the field because the team desperately needed him. Although never 100%, he did his best to give the team a chance. Well, he never healed and then he was hurt again later in the year. During the offseason, the Redskins ask him to restructure and essentially take a pay cut because he was hurt last year. Realizing that he held the leverage due to the shortage of quality corners, he decides that they can pay him his salary or let him go where he will certainly get a large signing bonus. Since he wouldn't restructure, the front office did everything they could to get rid of him but there have not been any legitimate offers. I would take a whole team of Shawn Springs. This is a prime example of why players should think long and hard about restructuring. They are holding his high cap number over his head. The cap number that is so high because he helped them out in the past. |

Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
Come on guys miss these optional things all the time. If it is indeed a contract dispute he would be well served in turing out a stellar season to up the ante Then again, he might just do that(have a Pro Bowl year) and then bolt if he doesn't get the extension now. Gibbs and the FO better investigate what the deal is if they don't know already. Losing ST would be very detrimental to our D at the very least and probably would hurt morale just as bad for the entire team.

Yeah, I am not too optimistic about Washington. I guarantee they will push him to come back too early too. Hell, he is a Warrior. He will probably push himself to come back too early. |
Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
I prefer to "asume" the positive as opposed to the negative. Much too early in the process to asume anything should be made of either's absence. Haven't heard what the overall attendance was for the beginning of OTA's so they may not be the only one's absent, just the most noteworthy names. Wouldn't make too much of it....

Doesn't anyone remember that Sean Taylor was working out at Redskins Park earlier in the Offseason. So what if he is not here now. You guys act like we are going to lose him or something. Sean Taylor isn't going anywhere any time soon. I don't see us losing Springs this offseason either. Stop getting your panties in a bunch over stupid shit.

Wake up, Grasshopper... JLC's latest blog: No Surprises at OTAs When It Comes To The MIAs Springs and Taylor not at the start of OTA practices today at Redskins Park. I am off this week and Howard is holding it down, but figured I'd post while I feed Rocco. I heard over the weekend that Springs had no plans to come in this month. He's still thinking he'll get cut - and who can blame him after being asked to take a pay cut then being shopped around the league all offseason? - and from what I hear, he's content to keep working out in Arizona and see what happens with the Skins. He's said all along that if they can guarantee they'll keep him around at his slated salary, then he'll be the happiest camper around. But with the way this offseason has played out, he figures he might as well keep doing his thing and wait and see what happens by the time mandatory mini camp starts. Stay tuned. As for Taylor, well his past speaks for itself. I'll know more tomorrow and maybe it turns out to be an "excused" absence, but as of late tonight the coaches and scouts didn't know of an excuse if there was one (and if upper management knew why Taylor wasn't here, they hadn't told anybody). I am told Sean was around the facility for the start of the workout program 5-6 weeks back and looked great and sounded great and the thought in the organization was that everything was cool ... but the players think otherwise and are convinced that Taylor isn't going to be around for a while and their read on the situation is that he wants to get paid. Again, we'll see what the official word is on all of this, but his peers - many of whom had not talked to Sean in a while - were not surprised by his absence and figured it was an indication of his contract. Some people want to label me negative or whatever, but I speak the truth people and told you guys weeks ago that drafting Landry could cause big ripples for the resident hard-hitting safety, and that we'll see how well these two get along. Staying away from OTAs is the classic Rosenhaus move, yet he's the agent of choice in these parts. Go figure. Yet another in a long line of mysterious Ashburn phenomena. Now, skipping OTAs is no major offense - although in Coach Joe's eyes it's a big deal - and he's not breaking any laws. But it's also a passive aggressive statement about his level of happiness with the organization, and for someone whose development stunted last year and needs to start playing up to the mythic reputation some have created for him, it's a bad move. He, more than anyone else, needs to be in there studying, learning the new nuances and changes of this defense and getting a read on opponents. He is the poster boy for OTAs are for, and he's not there for the second time in three years. Getting arrested in Florida while skipping out in 2005 hasn't made a major change in his thinking, apparently, when it comes to spring football. Maybe he needed an extra day or two to tend to personal business or whatever, in which case, it's understandable. But I also think if that's the case than more coaches and people in the facility would have already known about it and been prepared for it. |
Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
It must be a contract issue because Taylor doesn't have a history of being awol during minicamp.....oh wait, actually he does, and the last time we and the media both assumed it was contract related only to have him show up on time for training camp with nary a mention of anything financial. Given that recent history, I think we should hold off speculating about the guy for the time being. He is as mercurial as they come and to conjecture about his intentions is just silly.

Well the beat reporter for the Washington Post is speculating the exact same thing. What do you need, a call from Drew Rosenhaus? This would have happened last year if he wasn't tied up with the courts. |
Re: Springs and Taylor miss OTAs
I'm really starting to cool on JLC. I appreciate his insider info but it seems like he is increasingly willing to go out of his way to slam the Skins. Landry hasn't even signed a contract yet but somehow the very knowledge of his contract's inevitability is already tearing the team apart? I think it was when he slammed us for trading Arch, after ripping the team for acquiring him for an entire year, that I turned on him.

And what's the point of holding out for money if you don't tell people that you are holding out for money? Look, maybe you are right, but I just think that it's best to hear it from Taylor or Rosenhaus first before we go throwing around theories, especially since we have been wrong about this guy in the past on the exact same issue. |

And the Redskins have done what to avoid being slammed? I don't think that signing Landry is going to tear the team apart but he is about to get a fat check. Anyone who honestly thinks that Taylor is going to accept that they are willing to pay not only Archuleta but also Landry more money is naive. Sean is bigger, stronger, more experienced and just better. This is not a bad thing. Taylor deserves to make more money than Landry and the Redskins can afford to pay him. This is a no brainer. |

Can't really blame him for wanting a new contract. |
