Some clarification regarding Sean Taylor's contract
NFL.com - Washington Redskins Team News
The base contract is 7 years, $18M with a signing bonus of $7.2M. With option and roster bonuses, that brings his potential bonus money to over $13M. His contract also includes escalators that could bring his total contract to over $40M, with the 7th year voidable. The escalators are based on playing time, performance, and Pro Bowl or All-Pro selections. Considering his Pro Bowl appearance last year and the fact he hasn't missed any significant time so far in his career, you'd have to think he's already hit some of those escalators. So the question is, how do we really know that he's unhappy about his current contract when we really don't know what he's been paid to date as far as escalators go? |
Re: Some clarification regarding Sean Taylor's contract
I would also think things like leading the team in tackles, defensive touchdowns, fumble recoveries all factor into that as well.

What did Arch get paid last year?

Yeah good point, those would probably fall under the performance part. I'd guess he's probably already hit some pretty significant escalators. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Taylor actually an alternate last year, and got to fill in as first-alternate when Brian Dawkins bowed out? Who knows how that affects the escalator. But your point still stands, he could have a higher salary for all we know. Furthermore, whether he had escalators or not, that still does not have any bonus money due to him. The $13 million in bonuses has already been paid. So if he wants to collect the REMAINING money that is due to him (whether it's escalated or not), he still needs to show up and play for us. This is just to say that the 'Skins have the leverage if Taylor even decided to raise a contract stink (which we don't know if he will). Taylor is still going to play for us because it's in his financial best interests. He's not going to try a hold-out, so everyone chill. |
Re: Some clarification regarding Sean Taylor's contract
Yeah who knows how the Pro Bowl wording is in his deal, I'd guess if you go to the Pro Bowl that would count, but who knows.

Like you said all his bonus money has been collected and the contract runs through 2009 at least. Seems like a long time to just play for salary (long time in today's NFL). TO is the king of the bonus money game - sign a deal with big bonus money, play for a year or two, whine and complain, sign with another team for more bonus money, rinse and repeat... I hope Taylor doesn't try to play this game but he does have the same agent. And let's not forget that Taylor was already holding out in 2005, ONE year into his current contract. Luckily for us he got really attached to that ATV and his pending arrest forced him to put his contract demands on hold. I hope Taylor has matured since then. Personally I don't think his play warrants a new contract at this point. He's made pretty good money so far, more than he's been worth IMO. I think he's a very good player with potential to be a superstar, but he's not there yet. If he wants to get paid like the Ray Lewises and Urlachers of the world he needs to step up his game and become a true team leader on and off the field. |

Re: Some clarification regarding Sean Taylor's contract
I read one of the comments where a guy said that Taylor is not a solid coverage player. Do these people forget that this is the same guy that went 1 on 1 with Randy Moss and covered him like insurance ? He had a bad year last year but seriously, the man can cover.

Never heard that before. He has an opt out clause after next season. We need to re-sign him now so that he's a Redskin for life. Don't need some desperate team out there to throw huge money his way and potentially lose him. That would be a Nightmare!! |

Re: Some clarification regarding Sean Taylor's contract
We have a pretty clear blueprint for a Rosenhaus hold out strategy and it involves using the media for leverage. Why would ST holdout but not let people know he's holding out? That's why I think this rumor is so ridiculous.
I talked about this in the other thread but I'm getting real annoyed with JLC throwing these rumors out all the time. Landry hasn't even negotiated a contract yet but already Taylor is in revolt? Right, I'm sure Taylor doesn't want to play with another hard hitting athletic safety close to his age from the South. Let's just wait and see before we start speculating about things like this. |

I like him as much as anyone else on this site, but I think, given this team's history, that's a mighty bold statement. Art Monk left before "retiring a Redskin." LaVar used to be the face of the team. People used to say the same about Champ...blah, blah, blah. I'm not gonna bring up the whole list of guys who left the team. Just trying to illustrate the point that it's kinda bold to predict that anyone on the team will retire as a Skins. I, personally, would be surprised if anyone on the team, outside of one of the older guys, retired as a Redskin. |
Re: Some clarification regarding Sean Taylor's contract
Brunell is the only one who will retire a Redskin because he has been finished for two years.

The Washington Post just wasting their time because Taylor doesn't want a new contract.... Just ask Schneed.

I know that Jansen wants to but they are going to have to do something with that deal. It is disgusting. I am not sure about Samuels. I could see him gone if he gets a significant injury. The Ade rules! As long as he is taking the vet minimum and busting people in the mouth on teams he isn't going anywhere! |

If anyone still thinks that Taylor is happy about his contract just read today's article in the Washington post where Gibbs weighs in. Makes alot of sense as to why he would be pissed off. He is a major hold-out possibility. |

First, we don't actually know for sure that ST is upset about his contract, but he has been in the past and where there is smoke there is fire. I think its more of the skins not have a philosophy. They pay out the a** for FA's that come in and flop. Then when it comes to paying their own talent they suddenly become frugal. Right or wrong that is probably going to rub some people the wrong way. I'd like to see the skins extended some of our "own" like Cooley and Taylor. I think it would go a long way to correct some of the FO blunders over the last couple years. |

You really think so? He just doesn't seem like he is happy here. I mean he never comes to off-season workouts, he always does his own thing. Not that there is anything wrong with it but he just doesn't seem like a team guy to me. On top of that he's probably not happy w/ the FO giving AA alot of money. I see a divorce coming within three years IMO. |
