How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
Just wondering what your guys' thoughts are on this. The opinion from the players seems to be they really enjoyed the opportunity to get away and do their own thing this offseason.
Some player quotes: Jon Jansen: "I was home the whole time, and I feel great, too," Jansen said. "If I'm here, it's 4-5 hours. If I'm home, it's an hour and a half, and I'm done. Then the rest of the time I'm with my daughters and my wife. It's what the offseason should be." "I've always been excited to come back in and get ready for football," Jansen said, "but you feel so much more refreshed, a little more excited because I haven't seen the guys and haven't done the football thing in a while. I feel fresh." Santana Moss: "It's good to get away," receiver Santana Moss said. "I go home and I try not to see anything about football." Clinton Portis: "I actually think I'm doing more this offseason than I ever did, with my strength and getting back in shape and conditioning and my body," Portis said. Phillip Daniels: "I feel like I'm getting back to that form, working out every day and doing the things I can to try to help this team win a Super Bowl," Daniels said. It's also worth noting that a good majority of the team (60-75%) stayed in the area and worked out at Redskins Park over the past few months. So what do you guys think? Will this impact the team in a positive way this season? Was it a good call by Gibbs to loosen up a bit? |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy effect the team?
If you treat people like adults the hope is that they will act like adults. Only time will tell really.
I think the real question is, is it "affect" or "effect" |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy effect the team?
I don't think it matters one bit. Work them out at Redskins park, work them out at home, whatever.
Our offensive line worked out at Redskin park last year and had a great season. So did Ladell Betts. Chris Cooley worked out at Redskin park and he had a fine year. If Daniels and Salave'a and Griffin were hurt last year, I don't think the workout regimen was to blame; they simply got hurt. That's all there is to it. I guess maybe there could be a placebo effect; if the players feel more comfortable and more fresh, they maybe it'll translate into a better attitude. But whatever. Our season rides on GW producing a better scheme, and whether or not JC makes the leap. It's just we don't really get to see those two things taking hold until preseason games come, and until then, we need something to talk about. The workouts mean jack, IMO. |

Wouldn't you know I struggled with that very question, I even tried looking up some explanations of effect vs. affect and the explanations left me even more confused. Did I get it right here?? Effect is supposed to be used as a verb, no? |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy effect the team?
Right now it seems like its had a positive effect on guys attitudes. So we'll see if that positive effect translates on the playing field.
Like SS said, only time will tell. These guys got what they wanted, and now its on them to come out and perform. |

Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy effect the team?
I think it's interesting that the majority of the team still chose to work out at Redskins Park. Looks like the guys that chose to stay home were the Miami guys, no big surprise there, and a few vets like Jansen and Daniels.
If this policy keeps a handful of key guys happy, I think it was a good choice. I think the bigger part of this is moving up the start of training camp, and having a more intense camp as a result. I'm sure the coaches made it clear that if they let these guys do their own thing in the offseason, they sure as hell better be ready to work their asses off in July and August. |

I think maybe it should have been "affect" Schneed, what do you think?
In this case, it's all about the A. Effect is a noun, Affect is a verb. Sean Taylor's absence could have a deleterious effect on the team. Sean Taylor's absence could affect the team in a deleterious manner. I said deleterious. That proves I know how to use words! LOL |

And it keeps some guys happier, so they'll appreciate Gibbs more. Which may help team chemistry and stuff. But in the end, I think there are other factors that are going to have a much bigger impact on our 2007 performance. |

Well he's already kind of addressed some of the changes he intends to make, which sound intriguing. For one, he's going to keep Taylor deep as a traditional free safety most of the time. Gibbs also mentioned rushing Marcus Washington as a down lineman more often in pass-rushing situations. Anything to get more pressure on the QB. |

“All I know is we are attacking more as far as our line,” Redskins end Renaldo Wynn said of his early impressions from the organized team activities. “I notice a difference in how we’re playing more aggressive and keeping more guys on the field to rush.”
But the coaches have also told the linemen they will be freed up to rush more. The players have said that Williams almost apologized to them for how they were used last year. Defensive line looking to become the aggressors - Examiner.com Some excerpts from an acrticle in the Examiner today. I like the one where they say that Williams pretty much apologized for last year. Really looking forward to how the defense looks with the "new" aggressive attack. |

He played DE in college, he's always excelled at rushing the QB, so it sure makes sense. I almost wonder why we haven't done that more in the past, perhaps due to a lack of confidence in our depth at LB? |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
Well, we know Portis will be good to go in Week 1.
|
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
After all of this, the season still rests on the arm of Jason Campbell.
I hope that he has a positive EFFECT. If not, his woes could AFFECT the outcome of the season. |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
The relaxed offseason does keep some players fresh and mentally strong for the long season. As long as the players come into camp healthy, strong, and ready to kick ass, who cares where they work out. In todays NFL these players make a ton of money and equip their homes with gyms as good as the teams facility. plus they have trainers in the offseason as well. I am not against it. What I hope isn't as relaxed this year is the training camp itself. Seems like gibbs and co. went a little easy this past year.
aswering a post regarding Marcus lining up at a DE on passing situations : not sold on that idea. I think he was very effective when he was the 5th rusher on the blitz. Using him as a sole rusher in the traditional 4 down lineman doesn't seem like that good of an idea. when he is the blitzer he is generally taking on RB's or TE's and he has a good match up. IN the traditional down lineman he will be taking on much bigger guys and possible double teams. That would seem to completely take him out of the plays. I am never a big fan of taking LB's and using them solely as passrushers in a down lineman stance. |

That change excites me. When the linemen were asked to play the run first and foremost, you could definitely see how it restricted Andre Carter's pass rushing. Maybe now we'll see him getting to the QB even more? That'd be nice. |

Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
LaVar managed 11 sacks rushing from the DE spot, and he was never comfortable with putting his hand down.
Washington on the other hand is very comfortable playing DE. I like the idea of it. It's not like every 3rd down he'll be putting his hand down, I'm sure they'll mix it up with him. |

LOL, the offseason is hard. But MonkFan4Life did post a great article giving us a glimpse of GW's scheme changes. That article did seem to have some football meat on its bones. JLC has said that GW spent time examining the Chicago Bears defense on film and plans to incorporate some of the things they do. They definitely have a more attacking defensive line. Seeing him cut the line loose on the rush is very interesting. |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
I'd be willing to bet that Williams is very eager to turn this D around and I think we'll see a lot of new wrinkles and looks this year. Last year was rock bottom for him, I'm sure he's as motivated as ever now.

Agreed, his pride was probably wounded. From what I'm hearing so far, I'm pretty excited. An attacking line to put pressure on the QB while Sean Taylor spends more time roaming the secondary as a ball hawk? Pressure + Sean Taylor deep sounds like a formula for turnovers to me, which is EXACTLY what we need. Question is, can our personnel execute the scheme? Andre Carter turned loose up front sounds pretty good to me. |

GW more than anybody. He's the supposed "genius" and his D ranked 31st. Also, last in the NFL in sacks, and last in the NFL in interceptions. Meanwhile, Saunder's offense ranked 14th for total offense and 4th in the NFL in rushing offense in his first year here. I'm sure he's coming out with something to prove. |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
Hmmm, this is a hard one. All I know is when you are in a sport you HAVE to train, and you have to be serious about it. I'm not so sure time off is a good idea.

Pana, you're on a roll today! You must of gotten some good loving from the girlfriend! |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
What I totally admire about Gibbs is his ability to adapt, experiment and change.
In the aftermath of a poor season, he has no fear to experiment from generally established rules. When you would have thought the team would ALL be living a Redskin park with six-a-day practices, they actually have more freedom in the off-season. We'll see if it works |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
Yes, I think that Joe Gibbs' democratic, open minded decision to listen to the players' wishes, is going to make everyone, not just the ones who worked out at home, better prepared for the season.
Even the players who stayed had the choice to not be there. When you have to/must/are required to, etc. do something, you generally don't enjoy it, and you tend to be enervated by it to some degree. As far as off season workouts, where it doesn't really make a big difference where someone is when they are working out, to give people freedom to make their own decisions is going to give them a brighter outlook, more emotional energy, and reinforce their respect for Coach Gibbs and his leadership. |
Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
Actually, reading this article made me think of another thread about having the "disease" and this article really gave me my daily relapse. It really has me excited about the defense this year. The fact that Williams practically apologized for last season made me feel good. It showed that he must not be this hard assed know-it-all ALL of the time. I feel like after taking the D from #3, to #9, and to a dismal #31 last year he knows that his reputation as well as his "right to the throne" (as the Redskins Head Coach) may be in jeopardy. He asked for Smoot and Stoutmire back, and asked for Landry. Put confidence in his returning D-Line and I think that is going to give them a fire needed to make this unit better than they were last year. I'm pretty fired up.
A lot of people seem to forget that Sean Taylor has wonderful hands. The picks that he's racked up have shown that. He has an eye for the ball and can cover. Hopefully he doesn't gamble as much as he did last year. maybe he was coached too much last year. The secondary has depth, they are not all #1's , not even all #2's but the needed depth for the types of blitzes that we saw in '04 and '05 is there. You can blitz a Nickle, a one, or a two and have the coverage that is needed. Washington is geared up for his return but are his bone spurs going to cause a problem ? Can the offenses familiarity with Al Saunders' system they should be able to improve on last years #14 rating ? A returning Clinton Portis to pair up with Ladell Betts who really stepped his game up last season when Portis was sidelined makes the running game even more dangerous that it already was. Can Brandol Lloyd silence his critics this year ? Will Todd Wade be able to hold down the Left Guard spot left vacant by Derrick Dockery ? The players asked for that time off and they got it. Training Camp will be more intense than last years which should help the team. Gibbs showed them that he can give them what they ask for as long as they give him what he asks for. 100% FUCK I'M STOKED !!!! HAIL TO THE REDSKINS !!!! |

Re: How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
Time will tell what type affect his newly adopted policy will have, but if it works for the players who felt it to be important to them, then that's all that matters. As long as they come to camp in shape and ready to perform then Gibbs will not feel he made a mistake. It's all about what works.

how the hell am i supposed to reply to this, when you guys don't have a clue on how to spell it? heres my take, losers look for excuses. the skins were losers last season, so they look for excuses on why. and winners stand pat in routine, hoping not to screw up the success
