75 Years????

So I was looking around, and on the Redskins site, they have the "75 Year Hats" for sale. If I recall, the "Washington Redskins" have not been around for 75 years, they have however been around for 70 years.

They weren't called the Washington Redskins till 1937, 1932 they were the Boston Braves, and then from 1933-1936 they were the Boston Redskins. So technically they were never the Washington Redskins before any of those dates.

So why exactly is it saying 75 years?

- EDIT -

I'm still going to get one, but I was just curious thats all.

I figure that, but my whole point is, we weren't the Washington Redskins till 1937.

Yes we were the Redskins in 1933-36, but that was the Boston Redskins, not Washington Redskins.

The name doesnt matter dude, they are talking about the franchise. That is how they do it in sports all across the board. Why do you think when they talk about 1 team's history during a game, name changes dont matter?

It really doesnt matter, even if you wanna be anal about it you are still wrong. It is the 75th year.

Well thanks for informing me on that. I don't know how sports doesn't, I might love the Redskins, but I really don't pay attention to the whole "Franchise" per say. I'm not smart enough to learn that shit, I never remember / comprehend anything.

How do they do the Ravens anniversaries?

From when they were the browns? What about the browns now?

Ravens would be from when they began as the Ravens...I think Cleveland did something that they could keep the history of the team. New Orleans was prepared to do the same if they lost the Saints after Katrina.

I wonder about the Colts since the moved to Indy. Both Balt and Indy eras were very productive, but the Balt era had more titles. What do they do there?

Actually, I remember watching a Ravens game a few years ago, and Johnny Unitas was at one of their halftime ceremonies as a player for the "Baltimore" franchise with a Ravens jacket on.

Shouldn't he be associated with the Indianapolis Colts?

I think they had a similar agreement like the one Cleveland had, so all Colts history, awards etc. would remain a part of Baltimore. In fact, I think Unitas had made a big fuss about it when the team moved to Indy and had said he refused to be associated with the Indianapolis Colts

Hail, your last line is the operative statement. The diamond anniversary of the founding of the franchise is a good reason to sell you a hat. That's all the reason the team needs. You'll also see pewter Redskins jerseys around. Another way to separate $75 or so from diehard fans.

Besides that, 75 years makes the Redskins one of the oldest franchises in the NFL. That's an accomplishment that should be recognized on its own.

Re: 75 Years????

Bigger question is: "Who's doing the math?"
1932-2007 is 76 years.
Simple example: 2000-2001 is 2 years (2000 & 2001).
You can't do simple substraction. Someone pointed out that the Steelers are celebrating 75 years, too and they have 1933-2007, which is correct.
So, did the team not play for a year or did somebody make a rather embarassing mistake?

Re: 75 Years????

But we haven't played the 2007 season yet, so why wouldn't we just count until 2006? It's like celebrating a birthday, you don't celebrate the year ahead necessarily

Re: 75 Years????

On TV during the game they said that the Steelers and the Eagles are also celebrating their 75th anniversaries this season, but the Steelers franchise was originally called the Pittsburgh Pirates. I know they started in the same city and all, but they usually go by when the franchise was founded for these anniversaries.
Originally named the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team joined the NFL in 1933 [1] when owner Art Rooney, Sr. paid a US$2,500 franchise fee to the league.[2] Prior to 1933, strict state blue laws had prevented sporting events from taking place on Sundays, when most NFL games were scheduled.
from Wiki

I just think that Unitas had a great connection with Baltimore so that was his choice. It really would be up to the owner as to what defines a franchise's history. If Art Modell had wanted to claim some aspect of the Brown's history as his own, there is nothing Cleveland could do. Ditto Baltimore with the Colts. I think Modell may have made some concession in that area to facilitate the move, but it was not required that he do that.

It's like when a sponsorship changes on the PGA tour. The Kemper Open becomes the FBR Open. Then the annoncer's say "Greg Norman won the FBR Open in 1984" even though we all know that's NOT what he won. He won the Kemper Open. Same in Nascar. They will say "Cale Yarborough won 3 Nextel Cups". No he didn't. He won three Winston Cups. Point being, it's the ownership, not the name or the city that tends to carry the day.

The League considers the Ravens an expansion team and the Browns simply did not play for a few seasons.

It began When Allen turned the hot water off on the visiting cowboys lockeroom's showers....to me anyway.

What does this matter?

5-11 in 2006 matters.

2007 matters more!

Well, Wikipedia is far from an accurate source, but I was always wondering about it.

In reality, the Ravens are the original Browns. Just as we're formerly from Boston and called the Braves.

I guess they don't want to offend the people of Cleveland any more than they're already been, but the new Browns are an expansion team.

If the new Houston franchise decided to be the Oilers instead of Texans, they'd be a new franchise too.
