Clinton Portis has tendonitis in his knee

Just when his shoulder is getting better, now this. Apparently it's not serious, but tendonitis is a nagging injury that could affect him as the season wears on. From Redskins.com:

Asked about the health status of Portis, Gibbs revealed that the sixth-year running back has developed tendonitis in his knee. Portis visited with Dr. James Andrews, the team's medical consultant in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday.
The tendonitis in his knee flared up last week. It is not considered serious.
"He has had some soreness in his knee, but he said he could run and work out on it," Gibbs said. "He's on his weight [training] program. We'll see how the running goes. We'll see how quickly we can get him back.
"The main thing now is to get it taken care of now. What we don't want is this when we go to camp."
Portis has been continuing to rehab from offseason shoulder surgery. The shoulder is holding up well through the rehab, team officials said.

THat deal signing Betts looks even a little better. Portis is our best running back but I really don't get too concerned because of Betts. The only thing that would worry me is having both injured.

Re: Clinton Portis has tendonitis in his knee

That's definetly something of concern, one injury to another. They can be very nagging.

I agree Betts was a great sign, and Blaylock isn't looking so bad either. I also see an increased roll with Big Mike in his Fullback roll this year regardless of where we are with this CP issue.

I'm hopefully optismistic all will be fine when we NEED CP, in the mid/latter part of the season, playoff streach.

Sally Jenkins....crank up the hate. Portis missed Wednesday and Thursday critical OTA's. How will the players bond? Gibbs will have to call a press conference about how concerned he is that the team will collapse because one player missed two OTA's in May. Cancel the season.

It almost seems like they will eventually will move on with out him....not this year or maybe the next, but i bet Portis won't retire a skin.

Re: Clinton Portis has tendonitis in his knee

Tendonitis is not a serious injury, it just means the tendons in his knee are inflammed. Anti-inflammatory medicine should do the trick. Nothing to be concerned about here.

It's not serious but is very irritating. I thought the "Bus" had this as well. Thats why he would sit out and do very little work during the week. But he still found a way to overcome and play on Sun.

Typically runningbacks can miss a lot of time and still click when the season starts. I wouldn't worry yet...

I wouldn't exactly compare the Bus and Portis but I know what you are saying. The good thing is that Betts gives them the option of taking it very slow with Portis.

Well F&*^ ME ! Tendonitis ?!?! That's some painful stuff. And his knees of all things. Hopefully things will work out. I can see why they brought Blaylock in though. DAMN !!!

Not a big deal... right now.

If this was August I'd be worried, but he has plenty of time to get this worked out. It will be something to keep an eye on the next few months.

Re: Clinton Portis has tendonitis in his knee

While not serious, it looks like this could be one of the signs that put Portis in the class of running backs whose time in the league may be short. Few are able to stay in the league for years, like Bettis or Emmitt Smith; most are 3 to 6 year backs or less -- Stephen Davis comes to mind.

Time will tell, and I hope Portis can keep it up for at least three more seasons, but that doesn't appear likely.

Even with his injury last season, Portis has about 300 more rushing yards and 20 more touchdowns than Bettis had in his first five years in the league, so it's not exactly an unfair comparison. The test will be to see if Portis can last another five seasons.

And tendonitis isn't a huge deal if it's dealt with properly. If it lingers all season, then it might be a sign of a bigger problem, but I doubt that will happen.

Re: Clinton Portis has tendonitis in his knee

It's a little concerning to hear that Portis (and maybe the team) thought it was a big enough issue that they needed to see Dr. Andrews in Alabama. That guy is THE authority on sports medicine and orthopedic injuries.

Seems like if it was a little knee ache, Portis would have just seen the team docs and that'd been it. But he went to the big guy.

Hopefully they're just being extra careful with it and there's really nothing to worry about. The good thing is that if it was a Dr Andrews diagnosis, it's almost certainly the right diagnosis.

I'm sure he'll heal up and be fine by camp.

Re: Clinton Portis has tendonitis in his knee

In some athletes, Tendonitis has proven to be a pest for extended periods of time. I'm hoping this is not the case with Portis, however his situation demonstrates why depth at his position is so important, and trading Betts would not have been a good idea. Having Blaylock aboard for additional depth can somewhat relieve our anxiety because he is someone familiar with the system, and has been productive.

How is Portis ready to start with tendonitis in his knee?

This isn't good news. Any time Gibbs just "mentions" a knee I think back to Arrington and that mess........

I agree. Tendonitis is not just a "sore knee." It's inflamed tendons that can be very painful, and it's nagging and recurring. And what's more important to a RB than his knees?? This sucks big time IMO.

Is it May or September? This is a non-issue unless it lingers and with the depth that they have at runningback, they have absolutely no reason to push him back into action before it is healed. Even if they had to scope it right now it would have no bearing on the season.

At first, I was a little worried that they sent him to Andrews but then I figured that they want the best in world looking at him from the beginning so there isn't a problem down the line.

Granted, it is only mid-May and CP has plenty of time to get right. But I wouldn't call knee tendonitis in our $56M star tailback who's already coming off shoulder surgery a "non-issue." It's a concern for sure, and needs to be monitored. I'm glad Dr. Andrews is on the job. He's the man.
