Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
Redskins Sign DB Butler
Could this spell the end for Ade Jimoh? |
Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
I saw that this guy had been cut and wondered if we were gonna pick him up. We had him signed to a restricted free agent offer a couple years ago but the Rams matched. Obviously, there is something about this guy that the skins liked.
It is getting awfully crowded at the CB position. Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Macklin and now Butler have all been starters in this league. I figure Springs, Rogers and Smoot are on the final roster with Macklin and Butler duking it out for the fourth slot. Not sure if we will keep 5 CB's. The only way Jimoh makes it is if his special teams contributions carry him. They just might do that - Gibbs has praised him on those grounds often. |
Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
this is a shock to me. I remember it being reported that we were talking to him a while back. Maybe he's not really regained form from that 2005 knee injury & he's not a lock to even make the team. He was a pretty good corner a few years ago.
I sure hope this has nothing to do w/springs, and for that matter I'm not ready to see the Ade go either! |
Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
How many guys in the secondary are we going to have? Seems to me we have alot:
Carlos Rogers CB Fred Smoot CB Shawn Springs CB Sean Taylor S LaRon Landry S Pierson Prioleau S Vernon Fox S Reed Doughty S Omar Stoutmire S David Maclin CB Ade Jimoh CB John Eubanks CB Leigh Torrence CB Byron Westbrook CB Jerametrius Butler CB |
Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
I spelled his first name wrong by the way it's Jerametrius, not Jeremetrious.
|
Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
Well, we may very well be planning on carrying 10 to the 53 man roster, but even so, you figure that either Macklin or Butler will be the odd man out.
|
Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
I think our CB depth is pretty stellar right now. Other than Springs, I think all these guys are on the right side of 30 and, while not "shut-down" corners all capable of handling No.2 receivers without much help. Just off the top of my head, I would take our number three corner (whoever it ends up being) against any No.3 WR in the league. Even if Springs goes down with an injury, we are okay (not great - but not crippled either) as I think our No. 2 corners can do a credible job against all but the top 5-10 No. 1 WR's (Rogers/Smoot on Steve Smith? Can you say "Toast me up a TD").

Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
I am also kinda pulling for Westbrook. I am hoping the "he's a diamond in the rough" reports are right and that he turns out to be a real deal steal. He will probably have to be a practice squadder for this year however.

Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
In his latest blog JLC (well acually a guest blogger) said this...
"He's also durable, having never missed a game in his 6-year career. Schoebel could draw double-teams, which would free up interior linemen Cornelius Griffin and upcoming talent Kedric Golston to wreak some havoc, and give fellow end Andre Carter many sack opportunities. " I say offer Buffalo Shawn Springs and 2nd or 3rd rounder and see what happens. Given their glaring need at cornerback with the recent departure of Nate Clemmons and the uncertain long-term status of Schoebel, I think this deal makes a great deal of sense for both teams." Maybe he was right on and the skins are gearing up to make a push for him. Knowing our depth at secondary would you guys give up Springs for Schoebel? Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
You can never have enough depth.
|
Re: Skins sign CB Jeremetrious Butler
It's most likely just a depth signing, the Skins went hard after Butler a few years ago when he was a RFA, so I know they liked him then. Maybe they think he's an upgrade over Macklin.
|
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
I know they wanted him in the past and I guess they ended up getting their man for a lot less than before. The secondary must have been a huge weak spot for us last year in the coaches eyes. Between smoot and spring's injury history I can't blame em bringin in all these guys.
|
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
I think unfortunately this may be a case of extreme stubbornness. They didn't get him in 2004 so they've been relentless for the past 3 years that they had to get him at any cost. And they wouldn't rest until they did, not keeping in mind that time has passed and he's now older and has gone through some injuries since they first went after him.
Not too thrilled about this move, especially with the signing of Macklin. |
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
You just don't want Ade's job threatened.
Admit it - you have a man crush on the Ade. |
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
Could this mean that Springs is still on the trading block? Maybe.

Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
We really should to address the DE situation and Schoebel would be great for that! But if we give up Springs who out of all of our #2CBs would we put on the Steve Smiths of the world? But if we could actually get pressure up front QBs would have less time; and the corners wouldnt have to cover so long... All in all with Springs age and injury history and the fact that we KNOW he wont be around much longer makes me want to pull the trigger on this deal

Without them it still leaves 6 CBs and 6 safties. Springs might be on the trading block. I guess schobel wouldnt get traded w/o a draft pick or two from us - which really makes me sad if this plays out and we send away a second roounder w/ Springs. |

Butler could be just a look and see before anyone else signs him because we had an interest in him a couple years ago. The Rams signed Mike Rhump and chose to let Butler go......Go figure. |

A 6th or stright up would be the only way this should be considered imo |

he was already released |
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
That's great, we can never have too many guys trying-out for jobs to play in our secondary. Since our D-line is so stout against the run, and just awesome at getting preasure on the quarterback, I see why went after this guy. Yep, this makes all the sense in the world. And hey guys did you know that Wynn and Griffin are having car shows at Redskins Park. What?!?! Are you kidding me?!?!

What does the car show have to do with anything? |
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
Oh I don't know, maybe his skills or just too good to worry about playing at a high level. So, therefor he doesn't have to worry about his job or anybody else's on the defense. He can just concentrate on his cars.

I understand your frustration about the move. I agree that we really don't need Butler. Unless there's some other move on the horizon; the only one that would even be worthwhile though is trading Springs for a DT/DE. Even then it depends on who we get in return. But I think your car show argument makes no sense at all. They have lives outside of football. |

wow you are really not making sense right now |
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
I just feel that we have more pressing needs on D-line, not at an already stocked secondary. If anybody was paying attention, we were'nt really lighting up the sack totals and run stops last year.

Right, and the coaching staff concluded (rightly or wrongly is to be determined) is that a lot of this was due to poor coverage by the secondary. They also feel that some of their young linemen, particularly Golston and Montgomery have shown a lot of progress in recent months and deserve a chance. |

I'm not trying to make light of the situation as far as the car show thing. I know that it is for a good cause and everything. But, my ass is still a bit chapped from that pathetic showing from a defensive standpoint. And the fact that, to me the most glaring need is not secondary help, but D-line. |

I just want someone to add to the Defensive end rotation. Another DT wouldnt hurt either. I am lazy right now, Smootsmack who is the top one available besides kedrick clancy who just got released by the cards. |

When you start bitching about car shows and things like that it's hard for anyone to believe you have anything worth saying. If you just said that you believed the weaknesses on the defense last year were attributed to poor performance from the D-Line, and that's where our focus needs to be then your post would carry more weight. |

I'm just as lazy :) But I do know the Saints signed Clancy, so he's no longer an option. |
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
If there was a DE out there worth signing I think the Skins would jump all over him.
|
Re: Skins sign CB Jerametrius Butler
yeah, the skins and about 8 or 9 other teams. and butler better be good on special teams, because he couldn't cover me

I AM bitching about a defense that under acheived last year. And how our team's focus is not addressing it. We have D-lineman worring about car shows at Redskins Park. Redskins Park, you know a football place. Sure, if you want to have a diversion or two in your off time, I can get with that. But, at Redskin Park, it should be about football buisness only and improving upon a terrible showing defensively. If I were the coach or owner, that is what I would say. Like I said I am still smarting over last year, and I wish I could be a better person like you and forget that, but maybe in time I will. But, for this team to absolutely do nothing in the offseason to try to improve at the D-line position is simply just wrong headed. And then to try to fix the problem with a bunch of defensive backs?.?. I don't know what the coaches saw last year, but as a fan I saw alot of deficiencies on the front line. And, it also kind of grinds my gears to see these high dollar players trott out their expensive cars that they paid for with their fat pay checks, that IMHO that they for the most part did not earn with the play on the field that I saw last year. |
