Re: Predict Landry's contract details
I just realized that the Skins have to be mindful of the rookie pool. I think they have $2.1 million in space in 2007 remaining on their rookie pool, so Landry's cap figure in year 1 will have to be $2.1 million or less.
That means that the predictions Matty and I gave are impossible. With a bonus of $17.5 million or $18 million over 6 years, that would allocate $3.0 million to each season in bonus alone. That would put him over the rookie pool. The contract will have to have a lower bonus. In exchange, the Skins will give him a voidable 6th year, and more base salary in the later years. I'll say in the neighborhood of: - 6 Years (6th year voidable) - $12 million bonus - Total value of $45 million |
Re: Predict Landry's contract details
yeah ya the same dudes that said we should not draft a safety before the draft. Remember it me Its Me Snitches!!!
How about something closer to $15M guaranteed then? Would that work?
$15 million divided by 6 years comes to $2.5 million per year. So that would mean his cap figure in year one will be $2.5 million plus whatever the base salary is for a rookie. So no, that wouldn't work for us, because it would put him over the $2.1 rookie pool in year one. This is probably the exact reason why the Skins don't have a deal with him yet. Landry probably wants $15-$18 million in guarantees (that's market rate for the 6th pick these days) but the Skins have to explain that if we give you that much in guarantees, we have to make the deal a 10 year deal in order to fit under the rookie pool. Then Landry says hell no, I'm not signing a 10 year deal, I want to hit free agency at some point in my career. Then the Skins say OK, then if you want a 6 year deal, the guaranteed money can't be higher than $12 million. So ultimately they have a stalemate, and they'll have to get creative with voidable years to satisfy both Landry and the rookie pool cap. |
Re: Predict Landry's contract details
Does anyone think that we'll look back a few years from now and say "Damn, we sure were smart to lock up 30% of our salary cap in two safeties?" "That is surely what got us to the superbowl!"

.
Why is our rookie pool so low? It's not like we had any rookies to sign. Did we give HB Blades a Ginormous signing bonus? Anyone know? |
Re: Predict Landry's contract details
I think the thing that kind of stinks is Landry is still in Louisana right now from reports from the papers - which means logistically he is going to miss some camp no matter if he signs today. Why can't Landry's agent have him at at least stay at a hotel near Ashburn to get this thing hashed out and minimize missing camp? The parameters of his deal are for the most part already set in that the 1st round picks around Landry's selection have signed deals - so he is not going to get more than the guys picked in front and less than the guys behind him - the sticking points are what Schneed pointed out with the guranteed money and length of contract.
Why doesn't Synder send down Redskin One to pick up Landry to minimize his time off - that would be a better use of the plane than making sure he is at a press conference introducing him to the media when the draft was going on if you ask me. |
Re: Predict Landry's contract details
He's a quick flight away from being in VA. I would be willing to bet that Redskins One will be headed his way before the ink is even dry on the contract.

I wouldn't be suprised if he was signed before the start of NFL Live today. |

Re: Predict Landry's contract details
Why is our rookie pool so low? It's not like we had any rookies to sign. Did we give HB Blades a Ginormous signing bonus? Anyone know?
I know that our rookie pool started out at $3.4 million, per this report from ESPN. And per JLC in his blog:
Also, Skins have $2.1 million left under the rookie cap, which, given the low base salaries these guys make, is plenty of space for LaRon Landry. Those talks are ongoing.
This tell me we used $1.3 million on Ecker, Blades, Sartz, and Palmer. That's about $300K per player, which essentially amounts to their base salaries. So JLC's number of $2.1 remaining makes total sense to me: the Redskins started with $3.4 million in room, they signed the 4 low draft picks to essentially minimum salary deals, leaving them with $2.1. The $3.4 we started with isn't out of whack with the rest of the NFL. Tampa had 10 draft picks, including Gaines Adams at #4 overall, and was allocated only $6.1 million in rookie pool money. The rookie pool has set up a push-pull in the financial market between the vets and the rookies. As we know, vets got huge contracts this past offseason. But the rookie pool did not rise in proportion with those huge contracts this season. Rookies are seeing the big money that vets got this offseason, and they're being aggressive in their negotiations. But teams are having to tell them hey, we're bound by the rookie pool, it is what it is. And consequently you have a lot of #1 picks who still aren't signed. |
Re: Predict Landry's contract details
Rookies may be thinking that at first, but guys like Rosenhaus and other power agents should be nipping those thoughts in the bud pretty quick: "Look Super-High Draft Pick, I know you want the big payday but I can only give you 2.1 mil per season due to the rookie cap. There's is no other way around it."

Quake, what the hell man. What is that supposed to tell us?? Let's go man, you're in the locker room; so be more descriptive, make a point in your post, and explain to us how the hell this article is relevant to the thread. |
Re: Predict Landry's contract details
At least the Skins aren't deal with Brady "you should give me top 10 money because you valued me as a top 10 player even though I was picked #22" Quinn...things could be worse.
