Taylor

Just read the Taylor ESPN article (see Newswire) and was impressed with the kids attitude.

However, I gotta wonder where the writer got the impression the SKins will be looking at picking up an offensive player at #5? What position exactly does he think we are looking at with that pick?

We'd have to be totally dumb not to pick DL or trade for more picks. Getting Winslow would be a waste and any other offensive player (considering what we have and the depth in the draft) likewise. Only way I see us drafting O is if Ramsey is traded and we use the pick for another QB!

Daseal 02-24-2004 08:50 AM

I don't think our D line is as bad as they're made out to be. Sure, we need a few FA guys, but I can't see anyone who will be more valuable to this team in the long run than Sean Taylor. I read one site saying he was the closest thing they've ever seen to a greek god and will be better than Roy Williams (Dallas Safety) within two years!

This kid can be an awesome talent for us and a franchise player. I think Dline should take a back burner to him, we can get some D line in FA. We don't need the best front 4 in football, just a push and a run stopping DT. I think Brandon Noble and 1-2 FA pickups will solidify our line to be plenty strong enough.

Edit: Keep accidentally quoting!

SkinsRock 02-24-2004 08:57 AM

This guy could be just what we need to make up for the loss of Bailey. Get a good corner to replace Champ, and improve the safety position with Taylor and the secondary doesn't lose anything. I like Both Iffy and Bowen, but to upgrade to a potential star player is VERY tempting...

MTK 02-24-2004 09:04 AM

If he's available at #5 he will be far and away the most talented player on the board, some argue he's the best player available in the entire draft. I don't think he's the kind of player you can pass up simply because you have a bigger need at DL.

Simply put, if there's not another player at #5 that you can justify passing over Taylor, which there isn't, then you just can't pass him up.

SkinsRock 02-24-2004 09:36 AM

The question is though, is trading down and getting two players worth passing him up? I don't know, but I trust Coach Gibbs to make that determination.

Sniper 1 02-24-2004 09:40 AM

It wouldn't bother me a bit to see the Skins take him at #5. Reading the scouting reports on him he reminds one of Ronnie Lott.

Gmanc711 02-24-2004 10:10 AM

I wanna take Taylor with our #5 pick, rather than trade down for two other " average " picks. I mean if we walk away form the draft with Udeze or Harris , and another second round tackle, I'll understand 100% and be completley satisfied. I really, however, think we can do well on our d line, with Holsey,Wynn still in there and just a couple free agents. I mean we are going to have draft eventually, but it dosent have to be this year.

AnonEmouse 02-24-2004 10:17 AM

I agree with Gman's 1st sentence. I posted on the basis that I couldn't see us picking an O player in a month of Sundays.

I agree it would be tough to turn down Taylor, but if we swapped picks with someone, would he still be there are at a lower pick? i.e. we trade down to 7th or 8th (I can't see the Lions going for him, but then again...) and get a coupl more lower round picks.

I think we absolutely must get an impact DE from the draft or FA this year, plus at least one DT that is an improvement - I don't think Noble will be any better than the guys we already have.

Sheriff Gonna Getcha 02-24-2004 11:06 AM

I would actually prefer to trade down for a 1st and 2nd rounder this year and another 2nd rounder next year.

I don’t think we’d get two “average” starters with a mid first rounder and a second rounder. We’d be able to pick up either Wilfork, Starks, or Harris with a mid first rounder and I don’t think that they are average players. This year’s first round seems pretty deep (2 great QBs, 3-7 great WRs, two great RBs, 3-4 very good DTs, 2 great DEs, two great TEs, a stellar safety, a good corner, 3-5 very good linebackers, 2 great OTs, and 1 great C) and so I think we’d be able to pick up a great player around #15.

With a second rounder, we’d be able to pick up someone like Michael Boulware (to replace Armstead) or Stuart Schweigert (to replace either Bowen or Ohalete). I’d prefer to fill those holes to taking Taylor with the #5 pick.

We’d fill more holes (and our D has plenty of em’) and have to pay less for the two.

That said, I would be happy if we drafted Taylor. He’s a bona fide star in the making and he’d definitely shore up our defense. I just think that with Champ’s departure, we need more quality players than stars (like Taylor).

Gmanc711 02-24-2004 11:14 AM

I'm gonna be flat out honest, I think Tommie Harris ( unlikley ) , Uzeze ( VERY unlikley) , Wilfork or Starks or Will smith ( all the three more likley ) will fall into the second round, so if we trade w/ a lower second round team , espeically since we have the 42nd pick, not the 37th like some think. Therefore , we can trade wtih a team in say the 11 or 12 slot and still be getting a lower second rounder.

BrudLee 02-24-2004 11:19 AM

Taylor may be the best available player, but it's so premature to speculate who we'll take. Until the most pressing need (D-Line) is addressed in free agency, we won't know who our starters are going to be. I can envision a starting defensive line with no returnees. If the right players aren't acquired, we'll need to draft them, whether Taylor's on the board or not.

drew54 02-24-2004 06:38 PM

I really think that if the Bailey deal for Portis goes through or not we draft this guy. He has the potential to be a Ronnie Lott, and that would be sweet.

Also trading down should only be done if we get at least two #1's and the Patriots picks arent the ones I'm thinking about either.

Gmanc711 02-24-2004 06:39 PM

Who else has two #1's, that would want to trade up.

Daseal 02-24-2004 06:49 PM

I seriously doubt that Sean Taylor would be on the board if we traded down only two spots. The Lions and Atlanta could easily both take him. A lot of people are saying that NY might go for him. I personally think Gallery is their man, but I wouldn't be suprised one bit to see them take Taylor just because of the talent. However, the Giants already have one pretty talented safety dont they?

drew54 02-24-2004 07:39 PM

Someone like the Jets of last year who end up with a pair due to the loss of thier stud WR :)

it ain't his fault!!

taylor can cover any player in the league

he is over compensating for the lack of coverage skills in the other players with rumph and wright, once springs comes back and rogers. he wil be his old self.

how many people have said this in the past week and a half!

Re: Taylor

dude, i love Taylor, but he hasn't covered worth a darn so far this season. wasn't anywhere in plaxicos neighborhood in the giant game. got torched in the Dallas game. the defense as a whole has been horrible. why else would a 36 year old that hasn't played this year be getting signed?

Taylor is a fucking heat seeking missile on that field! Problem is, the rest of the secondary sucks so bad, he is not allowed to do what he does best. Play center field, cover over the top, Support the run aggressivelyand finally..................................KNOCK PEOPLE OUT! HAIL from MCUSA!

Hey, I love ST. But he has been as bad as anyone. I fact, all of the bad highlights would have his number as the most prominent on the team. Maybe the thought of going to jail was a good motivator for him.

Not a joke.

Nice come-back.

You were the one who gave up on the Redskins. Leave.

No question about it, the Redskins will take a DE with the #1 pick.

Because it's almost Halloween. Dead threads are rising out of the graveyard to feed on current topics.

I don't think the hijacking rule applies to zombie threads. So...

You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes,
Youre paralyzed

And no ones gonna save you from the beast about strike
You know its thriller, thriller night
Youre fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight

I think Joe Gibbs is a bad influence. He was seen as a good character kid in the draft, now Joe has him pulling guns and driving drunk! ;)

Thats how Joe Gibbs rolls.
