Redskins Insider: CP Update (and other injuries, too)

Redskins Insider

Portis will be working on his conditioning and strengthening the area around his swollen right knee for the time being. Would be very surprising if he were to practice anytime before next Monday and Bubba Tyer, director of sports medicine, laughed when someone suggested Clinton might participate in the scrimmage Saturday in Baltimore.

No way they're going to risk anything there.

So it's a setback, but, the Redskins say, a minor setback and something not uncommon for a football player trying to get back into full playing shape after a lengthy absence due to tendinitis. Once Portis started cutting and turning and exposing the knee to contact, the knee was aggravated and discomfort set in.

There is no set timetable for a return, Bubba said, but he expects it to be a matter of "days" for Clinton to get back, and not "weeks."

Also, WR Santana Moss is being watched ever so closely (I blogged about this a while back when they signed Corey Bradford). There is some concern about lingering groin/hip problems and his workload is being curtailed a bit. Bubba said that Santana has been experiencing discomfort in his groin, based on him compensating. Moss missed much of the offseason with the groin/hip problem. "He feels like he's compensating a little bit on his leg, so he's got a soreness in his groin instead of the hip flexor/abdominal area (which he hurt this offseason. I asked specifically if Santana had been compensating for discomfort in his hamstring - a problem with him going back several years - and Bubba said that Santana was compensating for "his leg in general, the other part, the hip flexor." Could be a case where they rest him in the scrimmage as well.

Obviously, we'll keep this on our radar.

And by "we" I mean, me, 'cause ... You picked a fine time to leave me, Howard/ Four injured starters, a mess in the backfield. Just me and an intern/while you take a star-turn. But that ESPN money's for real. (Shout out to The Gambler there, and seriously, Howard, you will be missed. Loved working with you. His last day was yesterday. Now I'm writing for two).
Okay, back to the injury stuff:

Marcus Washington watched the morning practice, but will be full go for the session tonight at 7, Bubba said.

Randy Thomas is still taking limited work but making good progress. Again, don't expect to see him in B-more. Mike Espy took a pretty good knock on his left knee and is still a few days away, Bubba said, so I'd scratch him from B-more, too. Obviously, Samuels is out (rookie Stephon Heyer was still with the first team O Line this morning; Wade still toggling between the first and second team with Whitticker and Fabini getting some first-team reps at guard as well).

Rookie LB Dallas Sartz was back out there this morning, but rookie TE Tyler Ecker remains out with a groin strain and the length of that injury is doing the 7th-round pick no favors. Fullback Pete Schmitt, who was opening some eyes in the first week of camp, remains out with a left shoulder injury. WR Carl Berman has a hamstring strain. Baby Rocco, by the way, is day-to-day with a mean case of drooling (think he's starting to teethe), Lauren is on the 60-day DL with sleep depravation and Chloe Jane is happily oblivious to it all, quickly memorizing the entire "Sound of Music" catalog.(I grew up with one younger brother so I missed all of this stuff the first time around).

So, overall the Skins went really light this morning. Practice barely lasted an hour. Now, in the past, even when the Skins were running less physical camps (and trust me thus far it's been nothing close to August with Marty out here) the 7 pm practices in full pads were generally the truth, when heads were crackin. I figure that could be the case tonight, especially when they didn't even go 90 minutes this morning.

Also, word is that your bloggy favorite - Sean Taylor "The Grim Reaper, Meast, Manimal, Swoop, The Punter Debunker" (okay I made that last one up on the fly) is going to speak to us media schlubs at 1:15, but that's not written in stone. Sean hasn't done a public group session in a long, long time and has done maybe 5 full press briefings since he came in the league in 2004, so it should be interesting. Will pass along the highlights on the blog if this thing actually goes down.

Alright, going to grab some lunch now. Keep cool out there in the sun and stay classy, Redskins Nation.
Cheers.

I watched NFL live and they said that Samuels will most likely be out all of the PRESEASON. They said it could of been much worse.

Sounds more like it. Thank the lord he should be ready to roll when it counts week 1.

I have looked all over the internet and can not find anything that states he will be out the year. I think that would be a big deal if it were true.

You might want to get your ears checked, they said the preseason not the season.

What's up with the people that do that CC stuff anyway? When I'm watching TV at the gym I can barely follow along with all the misspellings. If you really are deaf my apologies, it must suck to have to follow along with the crap job they do.

Ha well.. Yea it happens sometime, they mistype some words.. But I'm used to it anyway.. Most important of all, I'm glad that whoever typed CC for ESPN mistyped because losing Samuels for season wld be a big hit to Redskins..

We all know that Portis really, REALLY hates the preseason. So, that being said, any chance he's milking this injury just a little bit to get out of preseason games?

I know that sounds ridiculous, but he seemed to be jealous of the fact that Samuels would be out until the regular season.

I would hope not, AMD. That's not what I would consider a "team attitude". I guess it's okay if he subconciously feels that he'll get hurt in the pre-season and this turns out to be a mind over matter deal. Otherwise, he needs to be on the field with his teammates, practising his butt off.

You're not alone in asking that question. I tend to think Portis has more of a case of "pre-seasonitis" than tendonitis.

How do you explain knee swelling?

I'm not minimizing his injury, but there is a part of me that thinks he might use it to get out of playing. His thoughts on how much he hates the pre-season are well documented and given what happened last season, I think it's a legitimate question.

That is understandable, but I do not think that trainers and coaches would let him sit out if he was faking. At the same time, I understand how the might be a little over cautious to make sure that he is healthy for the opener. His dramatic change in morale tells me that he isn't faking, unless he is a good actor. I seriously doubt that though because we have all seen his characters.

Re: Redskins Insider: CP Update (and other injuries, too)

I dont think it is a case of a player milking it, I think they all are. If it was regular season I am sure CP would play this Sunday, but is not so why risk it. This aint High School Ball, these are highly paid commodities. I understand it is football and injuries happen, it is a rough sport, all that jazz, but resting players like CP, Thomas, Moss, big time players coming off minor surgieries and injury plagued years is a smart move. There is no need to rush these guys back in. The coaches the fans know what these players can do.

Sometimes the reporters don't even get it right. I checked Extremeskins and the nightly news says a grade 2 sprain. 4 weeks he'll be out.

I wonder what Gibbs is thinking now about his decision to let guys train on their own during the off-season. the two biggest advocates, CP and SM, both show up not ready for the season.

Actually, people put too much importance on the preseason and training camp. Players are now much closer to being "ready" for the season BECAUSE they train all year. Training camp is not as important as it used to be where guys have to come in and drop 30 pounds and get back in shape. Today's athletes are in better shape 365 days a year than guys of the past who needed to work other jobs in the offseason since they weren't getting paid millions. Portis and Moss are probably ready to start Week 1 now and after the bad luck they had last year, I can't blame them for not wanting to risk injuries in games that don't matter.

I don't see what one has to do with the other.

These guys had these nagging injuries throughout the offseason. It's not anything new.

Re: Redskins Insider: CP Update (and other injuries, too)

it is the first week of training camp they still have 4 weeks (not including week 1 reg. season) to deal with these nagging injuries.... there is no reason to rush these guys back and make them do things that may aggravate the injury. they will be fine if it was the regular season these guys would be playing (probably not CS but his is alittle more serious).

You're probably right, it's just disappointing after 8 months to see who is already watching from the sidelines.

Gibbs should make these guys work out here. Until these guys win something they should have no voice on the workout schedule.
