Any News on Andre Carter?
Things have been quiet concerning him so far. I haven't heard much in the Washington Post or from any of our training camp "experts.":)
It's probably been said here a hundred times already, but if Carter can start out the way he finished last season, do you think his impact on the defense could be even greater than that of Sean Taylor's? |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
carter really seemed to get comfortable with the defense, the longer the season went. and good morning 12th
|
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
Actually I've heard a few things about him, all good.
GW said it took him some time to adjust to playing DE full-time again last year, but he expects very big things from him this year. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
morning, Dmek! Good news on Carter. I'd like to see him go wild this year!
|
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
c'mon people! What about the important questions? Is Andre Carter shy? Is he married?
Seriously, it's like you people don't even think sometimes |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
Seriously though, I was a big advocate of bringing Andre Carter here before we got him so I hope we see more of the 2nd half AC from last year. Because he was downright awful in the first half of the season (but then again, so were a lot of people)
|
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
With Carter, I think it was just a matter of him getting comfortable with both a new atmosphere, as well as having to make the transition back to DE on a full time basis. Not drafting for the D-line may not prove to be so bad if he can pick up where he left off at the end of last season.

Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
I'm actually feeling good about not drafting DL. While Okoye was pretty special (at least his age and talent), it's good to see we're going to give Golston and Montgomery a chance. One season isn't nearly enough to see what we have.
And instead we have a beast safety (at least by all accounts so far). |

Question is, can Andre Carter be better than what we saw last year, or is it a what you see is what you get kind of thing? |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
double digit sack season for him this year

Problem is, if none of them turn out to be worth anything, we are one more year further back in redeveloping the line. It's very pessimistic to believe we won't get any help from those guys, but I doubt we get more than one quality starter. |

He seems ready to go. He is a beast, I tell you. That man scares me. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
you would think any player would have an adjustment period, having to switch positions
|
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
we'll see what he does in the little time he plays on Saturday. I think he'll be buzzing all around the field against the Titans even though it's just a pre season game.
He'll get a sack too, guaranteed |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
Wow, you'd think he's going to break the sack record with all the good things said about him.
I am still skeptical of AC. I think AC did not live up to the promise last year, and he has a lot to prove to me. Sure he finished the season well (by the numbers) but his play was still only average at the DE spot. He is, by far, our best DE option, and he needs to show us what he's made of. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
Didnt he say that at the end of last year, the coaching staff finally just let him go. That's what our boy Sam was saying on Riggo last night. For most of the year, they were limiting him to a particular gap to control. Once they let him free lance, he was able to generate pressure on the quarterback.
Doesnt that type of freelancing encourage the offense to run at you on that side? |

Dwight Freeney's best season of all (as far as tackles) he had 45 tackles, 12 sacks. His best for sacks? 16 and 32 tackles. A sack also counts as a tackle, so he had all of 1 tackle a game outside of those sacks, but he was still widely regarded as a menace. Simeon Rice never had more than 44 tackles in a season in Tampa. Julius Peppers has never had more than 53 tackles and he's one of the best defenders in the league. Andre Cater had only 6 sacks, but he did have 47 tackles last year. About par for a guy whose focus is the pass rush. Ends are not going to put up a ton of tackles if their goal is to get to the quarterback. I still contend that Warrick Holdman is the reason Andre was dubbed Highway 99. If Andre gets up the field, the run will go right by him, the outside linebacker should be the one to stop a big gain, not the end. Holdman should take more responsibility for getting eaten up on big running plays than Andre Carter should. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
Those are very accurate points. So should we be more upset with GW for holding him back? Why would he have not just let him go from the start?

I'm not really upset either way. I don't think "freelance" is necessarily the word to use, though, given the context it has been used here in the past. In regards to an end, if his forte is rushing the passer, just get him up the as quickly as possible. Tell him go after the QB, if he can react to the run, that's great. Now, if he anticipates run, say 3rd and 1, rein him in, but I don't think they should tell him to cover a gap on any reasonable passing down. I don't want Carter filling a gap on a 2nd and 7. That down and distance could go either way, but I want him to primarily go after the QB and I think that would be when he would be most effective, rushing the passer, not playing the run. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
Very few guys past or present can dominate both as pass rushers and run stoppers. Dexter Manley was an elite pass rusher (especially off the edge) but never a dominate run stopper (which is why we had Daryl Grant and Neal Olkewicz helping him). On the other hand, guys like Reggie White and Charles Mann were very good at both, although Mann slowed down in his later years as a pass rusher. Perhaps we're expecting too much from a weakside defensive end when we ask him to dominate in both aspects of his game. At 255 pounds (he apparently lost 10 lbs this offseason), Carter is more fit as a rusher off the edge rather than a slugger and mauler in the trenches.

He's down to 255 pounds? That's LB size, not DE size. I hope he got quicker. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
Carter better have a great year for us this year. I am following both preseason games on NFL.com (blackout in Detroit til Sat of the Lions). Dallas looks sharp and the Lions don't look to shabby either. This is going to be a very interesting season for us. I hope we looks sharp against the Titans. Romo doesn't seem much of a homo so far. Detroit has 3 solid QB's it looks like. Orlovsky was struggling for a little but has come on like gang busters. He might get bumped if the new guy O' Sullivan keeps up this type of performance. Calvin Johnson 2 receptions 45 yards, a 21 and 24 yarder. This Mcdonald guy has 145 yds in receiving. Funny how "nobody's" have big games like this. Lions so far might be a decent team after all.
He's down to 255 pounds? That's LB size, not DE size. I hope he got quicker.
I don't think his weight matters. 255 or 280, a pure pass rusher who works hard to avoid the tackles instead of beat them is toast against the run.
If this helps him be a more efficient pass rusher, I guarentee you he's no worse off at stopping the run than he was last year. That's not exactly a vote of confidence, but I'm confident that we see significant improvement out of Carter this season. Rest of the DL...lets just say I'd definately let Wynn play the LE. Daniels is pretty awful against the run too. Still a good pass rusher though. |

last week they said the rookie from maryland was handling Carter in practice.

Except without the risk of 2006 Phillip Daniels next season. |
last week they said the rookie from maryland was handling Carter in practice.
It's impossible to simulate a game situation in practice.
I would take anything I hear from camp with a grain of salt, barring the very specific details (such as Carter's weight). |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
daniels is done. Let hope carter can play like he did in the last six games.
|
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
AC was real strong in the latter part of last season. I look for him to pick up right where he left off, from everything I've read he has worked extremely hard in the off season.
He has ALL the tools to be really good at DE, physically hes a machine, and very smart. I believe this year we will see what we expected to see ALL last season from AC. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
i hope so. God we need to have a pass rush

Why do you think Bruce Smith and Reggie White, and really any good DE does / did so well? Cause they have the size with the athleticism. He can be as quick as he wants, but if he hits a wall, that wall is knocking him down instead of him knocking the wall down. I hope you're right about Carter, I'd love to see us actually have a pass rush for a change. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
Carter stats will be like this:
Tackles:69 (for losses)19 Sacks:10 or 11 FF:1 PD:9 REC FF:1 INT:1 Ya That sounds like a good Pro-bowler. |

I dont get it. Should I? |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
i'll sh-t a brick if he gets 11 sacks. He not that good. Unfortually he the best that we have.
|
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
He'll probably get AROUND that. I dont think 11 is so far fetched.
Quite do able. |
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
i hope your right 11 sacks in alot considering we only had about 16 as a team last year.
|
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
True, but I'm pretty sure he had the majority of those. He will have a better year this year, trust me.
|
Re: Any News on Andre Carter?
he had 6 i think. Would help if he had someone on the other side to help like mann had manley.
