No it doesn't! If Campbell goes down it's over. what a lousy job we have done at the backup QB position.

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

I don't know offiss, Collins didn't completely stink up the joint this pre-season. Worst case scenario, we've got Brunell (go ahead haters...pile on).

Why do you say that? We have two solid vets behind a young QB. Collins outplayed Brunell this preseason but it's not like Brunell played poorly.

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

I think either MB or TC will do a fine job in a backup roll. TC has looked better in pre-season, and Joe has said whoever played the best would earn the spot so there you have it......he has.

MB is also a proven leader and his arm looks strong and IMO can still come in and win games for you with no problem.

Hopefully we see JC progress as we think he will. I think we are in real good shape at QB!

For what's it worth, the third stringer rarely takes snaps with the first team.

I still think Brunell's name could surface in tpossible trade talks.

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

I feel good about the position...I am glad that Collins was named the #2. I like Brunell as a person, but if I see another roll out to the sideline and throw the ball away from him, I might just loose it.

I will agree with offiss on one matter (looks outside to see if it is raining fish). To have a third string QB making as much as the 1st and 2nd stringers combined (and that's after drastically reducing his salary!) against the cap is not a sure sign of competance. While I applaud the decision to make Collins the #2, as he clearly deserved it from his preseason performance, Brunell should be given the opportunity to compete elsewhere, and on someone else's dime.

That pretty much sums it up. No way we can justify Brunell being on the roster as a "safety valve" or "insurance"for all the money we're paying him.

This could have been a preemptive move in order to later trade Brunell without drastically affecting the depth chart.

You mean like when we were down by 13 to dallas late in the 4th quater? And MB threw two long balls to SM for two quick TD's to WIN the game.....?

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

I am amazed at the continued bile thrown Mark Brunell's way. Do these fellow warpath members really think they can evaluate a quarterback's performance than Joe Gibbs?

With two solid backups, we are likely in better shape at that position than many NFL teams. The only real issue is that they're about the same age, we tried to address that in the draft -- it just didn't work out.

And no, the season would not be over without Campbell. Things would get tougher for sure, but certainly not impossible. Philadelphia certainly managed to survive McNabb's season-ending injury last year. Why not us?

Stop being so pessimistic...

I've been lurking around the forum for a very long time, just haven't posted much. Doesn't make the Brunell bashing any easier to take...

As for those that think Brunell is enemy #1, they probably should get a life. But it does irk me when they put their long-distance TV evaluation ahead of Coach Gibbs' professional evaluation. Whatever...

I agree 100%.
I'm a bit surprised really. So TC played well, MB was alright & he's the better qb w/much more experience. You have to wonder if there's more to this than simply winning the preseason qb competition. In addition to Gibbs' letting the vets on D go, this move might just as much be to signal to everybody that no spot is guaranteed. If that's the case, we'll see if he changes his tune w/CP at some point too.

On the other hand, by the time this actually means something, MB could be the #2 again, making Collins feel like Ramsey.

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

Two points:

1. Gibbs doesn't care how much you make as a 1st, 2nd or 3rd stringer.
He claims he puts the best player forward, regardless...this I believe.

2. Regarding trading Brunell. I really dont think that is possible anymore even if they wanted to. Remember, they extended Cooley's contract.
I dont know the cap hit ramifications of a potential Brunell trade.

does anyone know if a Brunell trade is even possible according to the cap?

if our defense plays the way we think it can, and Collins comes in, he will be good enough to manage the game. so our defense can win it

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

Boy, what a difference a year makes? This time last year we were all ready to throw Collins under the bus (including me) Granted he played a little better this preseason, mainly due to the fact he had the opportunity to play with the first team, something he didn't do last year.

I have the utmost respect for Brunell's professionalism.

GTripp0012 09-05-2007 06:45 PM

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

Congratulations to Todd Collins first and foremost.

Don't think this move is entirely based on preseason performance. Gibbs is too smart, and knows too much about both of these guys to allow 4 preseason games to completely change his opinion of his guys.

It seems like there is something that makes Gibbs think that Brunell is incapable of posting numbers like he did last year if hes called on. While theres absolutely no guarentee we can get that sort of production from TC (if called on), I'm open to the idea that he (Collins) can emulate 2006 Brunell better than 2007 Brunell could in a relief appearence.

Ideally, Campbell takes every snap this season, but if he doesn't, I see both of these guys getting time back there.

1. If you're saying he objectively looks at all factors in making a decision, I agree, but that's far different than simply putting your best players forward regardless of age & salary. Wynn might overall be a better player than Wilson at this point, but Wilson makes the roster based on his upside, age & salary.

Gibbs is a savy leader that knows when he has to make a drastic move. This might not be classified as such, but i don't think it's at all far fetched to think that in this case he needed to show the team & coaches that he could promote TC.

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

I guess we skins fans need a QB controversy, or we don't know what to do with ourselves!;)

Collins played better, but clearly Gibbs likes having MB around. We do pay a lot for him as a #3, but that's the contract we signed. Not sure that moving him for a conditional 6th is a better move right now. Maybe his value will go up during the season as QBs go down--we'll see. Of course, if Collins has to play and he sucks, we'll all be screaming for our favorite guy, Mark Brunnell.

Whatever.

Longtimefan 09-05-2007 07:04 PM

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

I doubt very seriously that Gibbs would have made the same decision had Collins play been simular to what we saw last preseason. I'm just convinced he finally saw the light.

I really dont think it is possible.
And then who would we get to replace him, Bramlet?

I just want this Brunell trade talk to die!

2. you may be right. Gibbs wont/cant cut Brunell...but he is sure showing the fans and the team that he no longer has a Man-Crush on him.
That is meaningful

Re: RI: Collins is the no. 2

Hey, Collins played great in the pre-season and rightfully deserves the #2 spot behind Campbell. I think it's great to have three QBs who the coaching staff feels can step in and lead this team. I'm definitely proud to have Mark Brunell on the team. The guy could still step in and start if necessary. You can't say that about many 3rd stringers. We're great at QB this year.

I was never a Brunell hater. I do think he is trying to hard to show how strong his arm is after surgery this offseason. I also think it was affecting his accuracy and that is why he is # 3

See 90% of the games he started as a Redskin. And it's not like I even hate Brunell. I just take issue with the idea that he could come in and win games "with no problem". I actually like having him as the #2... apparently more than Coach Gibbs does. :laughing2

You're so right on Brunell trying to gun the ball.

For the record, I don't think people here hate Brunell just for the sake of being negative or hating. I think the moment someone says anything negative about Mark Brunell, people are quick to say you're hating for no reason.
