Well that didnt take long...
Redskins Sign DE
Whats the deal on this guy, I dont know much about him. |
They have been courting this guy for a couple of weeks now. Gibbs must like something in this 30 yr. old DE, or Williams likes him. Probably will come pretty cheap and overall his stats are not bad.
|
He was signed here in Chicago after a promising start in Seattle. He never quite found his nitche here, and was injured a lot. Has potential if they can keep him healthy.
|
He had a lot of tackles (41) last year. Sounds like he is a good/cheap pick up. Typical of Gibbs defenses in the past Daniels will be a role player. Situational substions for our d-linemen this year.
|
He's worked with Greg Blache before, thats why he's eager to come here, and Blache obviously like him as well.
|
WP says, "According to sources (probably Vinney Cerrato) , the Redskins are a leading candidate to sign Tennessee's Jevon Kearse, one of the NFL's best pass rushers. Washington is also believed to be interested in defensive end Bertrand Barry of the Denver Broncos."
Bertrand Barry had 11.5 sacks last year. Along with Kearse, this should solve our pass rush problems. |
I dunno about Kearse now.... we only really needed on DE, I thought Wynn does a fine job as long as good people are around him. We should have gotten Kearse and maybe a blue collar DT. Then we draft Tommy Harris or Sean Taylor in the draft and our defense is set.
|
No surprise here, I figured once this guy was released Snyder would be looking to snatch him up for Blache. Sounds like a solid vet for the DE rotation.
|
I hope we'll stay away from Kearse, but it's likely that Redskins One will be headed his way early on Wed.
|
Daniels is better than what is on the squad now but that is not setting the bar very high. The thing I like best about Daniels is that even when the Bears had been eliminated from the playoffs, he played hard.
I heard an inteview with Gibbs and he said that they needed to get some great players and some good people on the defense. Daniels is one of the "good people". He should help the defense improve. |
Sounds very versatile too. Can play either DE or Tackle and doesn't care which as long as we win. Sounds like the type of player we need on this team!
And since Blache already knows what he can do, that's just an added bonus. And we wouldn't have gone after him if Blache didn't think he could get the job done. |
Although he sounds like a good, solid rotation guy to team with R. Wynn on one side (opposite J. Kearse...
I think it's kinda odd when a DE makes more million in salary than sacks he has when starting all 16 games... Daniels is set to make 3 Million this year, and last year had a whopping 2.5 sacks. Again.. he's a solid pick up, BUT... he's in his 30's and had his worst season last year under our current DC. Just debating the 3 million that's all. |
Maybe that had something to with how he was utilized in the D. Bouncing position to position won't help your play much. When he started at one position, sounded like he did a great job.
|
I didn't know too much about him but I have a few friends that are bears fans and they spoke highly of his heart and said he has some skills at D end and D tackle
|
Just say No to Kearse, JG!
|
Check out this quote from Gibbs on Daniels:
Said head coach Joe Gibbs: “Phillip is someone who is very versatile—he can play all the way across the board. He’s the right kind of person, which is very important. As soon as it came across that we could talk to him, he was the first guy we wanted to get on the plane and get him here.”
|
A high character guy ... par for the course for JG.
|
He could end up playing DT, but what i like about this pickup is that the DLine is being completely rebuilt, not just patched up.
With GWilliams here tho, like it or not, I think signing Kearse is practically a done-deal. I'd be surprised if we don't sign him at this point- and early. And while i'm not sold that he'll be worth the money, there's a great chance he could return to form w/ a new team. Especially with some help around him like Wistrom or CGriffin. |
I heard that Wistrom is almost certainly going to KC. He could be the Chiefs' "first day signing".
|
Has anyone heard the actual amount the contract is worth? I've only read that its five years in length and I find it hard to believe his price is anywhere near the $3 million mark like another member posting seemed to believe. that was the salary he was to make before being cut and the skins aren't picking up his old contract if I'm not mistaken. Who do you guys wish we go for as our pass rusher: Kearse or Barry? I don't know anything about barry except that someone posted that he had 11.5 sacks last year. anyone know his age, height, weight, reported work habit, and his injury record?
|
I just heard on ESPNNews that M. Wiley of the Chargers got cut and was wondering if anyone other than myself thinks we should try to sign him. He's a good, consistent player who would come cheaper than kearse or Barry even though I like the idea of Barry signing here.
|
This waiting is killing me!!! It's 11am in London... where's my free agents?!!! (stamping foot).... I think Dan has spoiled me.
:( :D |
With only about $7 mil in cap room left at this point, once we pick up a boatload of defensive players and a tight end, especially if we sign some bigger names like Kearse, what are the odds that we'll have enough left over to draft someone like Sean Taylor? For you cap specialists, *elbows Canuck* how much cap room do you think we'd need in order to get Taylor signed?
--Phin |
The rookie cap is a seperate pool that's determined by some sort of formula that takes into account the number of picks a team has and what rounds players are taken in. At least that's what I understand it to be, can anyone else confirm this?
|
Yep, something like that. I wouldn't worry about signing our draft picks (pick?) - keeping them 2-3 years down the line could be a problem.
I think, considering Daniels can play DE too, if they sign Kearse or Wistrom, they won't go after another DE. They'll stick with Wynn and concentrate on getting a DT or 2 (Robaire Smith?) a LB or 2 (the guy from the Giants or Washington from the Colts?) and a safety - possibly drafting Taylor. After all apart from TE (FA?) what else do we need? |
Matty:
You are correct; the rookie cap is a separate number calculated by a specific formula. HOWEVER, the rookies have to fit into the team cap; they are not over and above the team salary cap. A couple of years ago, the 49ers were in a position where they had to make trades on draft day or lose their picks because they would not have had enough money to pay the picks because of their cap problems. As I recall, they released a player of two that day and traded down to get a boatload of 5th and 6th round picks that would be "minimum salary contracts". The other issue with rookie contracts at the very top of the draft is that while they can be cap freindly for a couple of years, they tend to blow up quickly because they have big signing bonuses AND they tend to be heavily backoaded so the player can get an ego massage and say he has a $50M deal. By year three or four, some of them are pretty burdensome. For example: Samuels, Chris. |
This move puzzles me. Daniels most certainly will not play RDE, as the team will be looking for more an impact pass rusher for that spot, along the lines of Kearse, Berry or Wistrom.
So that means Daniels will most likely be the LDE. Was he signed for depth or to start? I have not seen contract numbers on him, which is usually a good indicator, ala Brunell. Wynn is still under contract, so is Daniels backing him up, is Wynn backing him up, or is Wynn a potential June 1st cut? |
Wynn has a pretty big cap number, next year I belive, so It wouldnt SHOCK me if he was cut, although hes the best dlinemen we had last year.
