Has the buzz begun?
Wandering around the internet today I am discovering a disturbing trend. The Skins are getting a lot of play in the "This team might be good" arena. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just paranoid? I'd much prefer to fly under the radar for a while longer. In 2005 we were 3-0 and called "The worst 3-0 team ever". As mad as that made me it also was good because we were so underrated.
I am noticing this mostly in everyone's weekly picks columns. I am a freaking mess. Us winning games makes each week even more stressful. It really is easy when we just suck and it doesn't matter. |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
I know. See, I'm not one of these people wanting the media on our jock, but I DAMN sure don't want them putting us at twenty-four in a power poll below at least four teams without wins.

One article I saw said something like if the Redskins win this weekend, they are on their way to solidifying their push for dominating the NFC East. Another said that if the offense finds a groove they could be dangerous enough to contend for the NFC title. It's been a wierd week in sports reporting though, I also heard last night that it will be the Cubs and Yankees in the World Series. |

Before the season started, Schlereth actually said that our D would be a weakness because we did very little to upgrade the unit that finished 31st last year. I guess that inserting Fletcher, McIntosh, and Landry into the lineup, while adding significant depth at CB was doing very little in his mind. I am so glad that we selected Landry over Okoye and other D-linemen available. If the Danny can re-sign Taylor, our safeties will terrorize opposing WRs well into the next decade. |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
What they're really not taking note of is that Jason is going to be dangerous before it's said and done.

Re: Has the buzz begun?
Here's something else (from ESPN Insider):
7. Washington Redskins This is an underrated team and after years of underachieving, the Redskins are finally playing Joe Gibbs football -- a hard-nosed running game combined with an aggressive defense featuring a blitz heavy package. Gibbs changed the philosophy of this team in the offseason. He wanted to get back to his old Redskins formula, which is give the ball to the RBs, Ladell Betts and Clinton Portis, wear down defenses and take shots in the passing game when the matchups are there. This means Gibbs doesn't have to ask QB Jason Campbell to carry the offense. The Redskins have the ability to control the flow of the game and keep them out of offensive shootouts, but they must overcome injuries on the right side of their OL and Campbell must play with consistency. They may not be pretty, but they are real. Status: Contender. |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
Also from the Worldwide (Bill Simmons):
The Redskins can move the chains, play defense and make 2-3 big plays downfield per game. The number of NFC teams that can do all three of those things is exactly zero, which means I'll be taking the Redskins seriously from this point on.
|
Re: Has the buzz begun?
In the NFC it's not going to take much to make some noise. If the Skins romp over the Giants to go 3-0, we'll definitely start to hear a lot more hype.

Re: Has the buzz begun?
John Clayton had Washington picked as a sleeper in preseason. He's the only one I can recall giving props that early though.
|
Re: Has the buzz begun?
Its called coverning their butts so they don't look bad. If you notice they are using words like, could, looking strong, just maybe, etc... they put this out there so if we fail they used those words and if we keep winning then they can point back to their comment to say how they called it in week three.

so did Jaws, Salisbury, and Smack |

I thought Jaws did, but I wasn't sure. And if Smack is a reference to yourself, then it doesn't count. :silly: |

TOTALLY the unnoticed x-factor....flyin' way low |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
I like the coverage because it allows me to see more "Skins" but i really like to stay under the radar

Salisbury???? THAT is indeed odd |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
so did Jaws, Salisbury, and Smack
Salisbury had us winning 8 games. Not a bad pick, but the early returns make me think that Sean's pick is a bit low.

When you look at our schedule, we could easliy go 8-8. However, if we live to my (completely unbiased) estimation at all, it could easily be........that which cannot be named, but.........much better |
so did Jaws, Salisbury, and Smack
Chris Mortenson also said we had a good chance at the playoffs before the season began. |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
Salisbury said they were a well coached team with one of the best running games in the league, watch for them as a sleeper.
Skip Bayless had them winning the NFC East...at 8-8 |

That was one of the articles that made me post this thread. |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
Shhh don't tell anyone, but the Skins should only get better as Campbell settles in.

Im getting excited just reading this thread!

Re: Has the buzz begun?
I heard the same thing a couple of different times on ESPN Radio today. Colin Cowherd at first admitted not being real impressed by the Redskins 2-0 record.
But then after hearing that the Skins are #1 in the NFC at converting 3rd downs, and #1 in the NFL at stopping opposing offenses on 3rd down, he was convinced that Washington is as good as advertised. Mike Tirico and Scott Van Pelt (who has to be at least 7ft tall) both thought that they were for real. We better not lose this weekend though, or all the praise will come to a screeching halt. |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
For our images sake I don't think we can afford to lose this weekend. For our teams sake this weekend should be a win and is the last time we can make a mark on the NFC East for a month or so. If we do lose this one I can't see it being a huge hit to our team with exception of moral. I don't think the Giants are going to go far this year so giving up a divisional win to them shouldn't be huge.

(Good for him - it was his day off). I thought it was odd, because big time golf was being played, and he's the big time golf guy. |
Re: Has the buzz begun?
we have to win this game. This game this weekend is the type of game we lost in the past. We have to win.
|
Re: Has the buzz begun?
I don't really see this one as a MUST WIN game. Last week I believe was a must win, but this week it would be bad for moral if we lost but I don't think it's a must win.
|
Re: Has the buzz begun?
A win Sunday will go a long way towards establishing a little of that elusive respect which we so often speak of, plus it gives us a two game advantage on both the Giants and Eagles in the division which is huge.
