Where Was Calvin Johnson?
Before the draft I was one who thought CJ was the best pick out there and prayed he would fall to the Skins. Well, yesterday CJ was non-existent - almost literally. I guess he's been slowed by injuries or whatever. But boy am I glad we got Landry instead!
I don't think Detroit should draft a wideout in the first round for another 20 years. It's a curse. |
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
I am guilty of those thoughts before the draft as well.
Hmmmm, maybe Joe2 does know more than me??? Landry is.............special, and not in the short bus way |
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
all of you guys that wanted johnson, please stand up
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
Like I said, I was all over CJ during the draft.
I think there's something in the water in Detroit. |
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
That's the problem with high draft picks. These guys get hyped and then the evaluation process just becomes a talking headfest.
I did my research on Okoye predraft, and it really doesn't surprise me that in his first 4 games he got 4 sacks. Wish we would have had the balls to take him (even though our DT situation is far from bad), but Landry isn't exactly chopped liver himself. CJ will be a fine receiver in this league, but a total waste of the second overall pick. Not that we didn't know that at the time. Anyway, my Dwayne Bowe rookie prediction is right on track. But hey, at least the Lions will get more utility out of the second overall pick than the Raiders will get out of the first. |

I'm standing up. No disrespect to Landry cause he is really really good, but I'd still rather have CJ. It's not like he hasn't done anything. He has already scored twice and he missed a game. |
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
Way to early to write off CJ, but I still think we made the better choice in taking Landry. He's really solidified the secondary, you would hardly know he's a rookie the way he's playing.
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
Definitely can't hate on us picking Landry.
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
i wanted johnson too, but my second choice was landry.....and im glad we took him.......he's a beast Sean Taylor will rub off on him
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
LaRon was a bomb pick. Arguably the best defender in the draft.
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
i like CJ, but the management took landry and so far it was good
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
I wanted CJ but I was really happy with the Landry pick. I love the kid...he plays with a passion and throws pretty funny tantrums on the field...ask Kevin Jones, he knows who Landry be.
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
How 'bout Tatum Bell yesterday...oh, and wait..what about TJ Duckett, they lit it up.
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
I'm glad they took Landry, but I wouldn't mind CJ either still. Before he got hurt early on against Philly on a pretty wicked shot, CJ had 10 receptions averaging 18.9 yards per and had 2 TDs as the 3rd wr so it's definitely too early to say he's a bust. if anything he and Landry have been pretty even production wise despite CJ missing a game and a half.
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
CJ is a rook and not to be written off, and coming of an injury.
I however, NEVER wanted CJ in DC. We got the player we needed in Landry. Go figure they actually know what they are doing...... |
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
I'm happy CJ wasn't 100%, because he's nasty. Although Roy Williams is nasty too, and he didn't do squat either.
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
Let's not forget Landry sealed the Philly win with that last thunderous hit on "White Lightning". How many games has C. "The Other" Johnson won singlehandedly for Detroit?
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
LaRon was a bomb pick. Arguably the best defender in the draft.
Agreed. He and Taylor seem to mesh real well and that's as important as Landry being the beast that he is. |
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
Hail.. first time poster, long time reader. just wanted to comment on the secondary. nasty. we held the #1 passing offense to 76yrds., and macklin wasn't even active. we constantly brought pressure and didn't even apply the blitz too often if at all.(memory a little fuzzy due to well, you know, alcohol:) the defense allowed a measely 144 total yards to a ferocious offense. anyone thinking the giants game could possibly be a fluke?,even though they don't look too shabby right now. if we continue to apply and execute the playcalling we did sunday, we stand a good chance. green bay will be tough, but they can be beat. stay positive and go skins.

Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
good post. welcome to the board.
|
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
i think i was one of the first to post landry should be our first pick. after his combine and seeing those numbers compared to what he did at lsu...you just knew this guy was a stud...i love him and so glad we went defense and went secondary too. showing pretty good right now isnt it. i am telling you a back 7 is where its at, it allows for the front 4 to be more creative and less responsible for things....loved the pick, love landry.

Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
CJ's been fine, wrs don't usually go off their first season, but he's done well.
i liked bowe as the 2nd best wr, and he was a great value. okoye and carriker in a trade down seemed like good ideas at the time, and still are... we still could use another wr and a de, and either could be a better sum total (w/ prioleau or stoutmire at s) than landry with what we've got. overall we're not doing too bad, and our young guys are getting big minutes, which is always nice. |

C'mon. Landry didn't singlehandedly win the game for us. It would have been tied except McNabb missed a wide open wr at the goalline. |
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
I wanted Okoye BAD!!! And Im still a little disappointed we didn't get him. He already has four sacks in his first five games and he's like what 19? He could have been a beast for us for a long time.
Don't get me wrong, Landry is a beast, and the best pick we could have made given the circumstances. He is the better player, and he and ST make the best Saftey Tandem in the league, but if someone were willing to trade up, and we could have gotten Okoye, AND some more young talent, I would have been much happier, but no complaints really, Im really excited to watch ST and Landry develop together. |
Calvin Johnson's injured. He's not bust yet. You're a bit premature with your call.
Point is he hasn't come right in and revolutionized the game as we were promised we would by the talking heads. Not that he's a bust, far from it. Just not worth the 2nd.

Getting Okoye or one of the stud ends that each went to Atlanta and Tampa were 2nd best choices (even on a good trade down deal) because w/ Landry we basically got a better ST. Taylor trusts Landry to be a huge presence in the box so that he can contain the deep threat the way he did in college (tons of interceptions). I think Taylor's philosophy for SS is to punish guys so bad they don't want to go across the middle, and when we didn't have one who could do that Taylor had to play in the box way too much. I'm just saying Landry was the very best pick to improve our D as a unit IMO. |

The guy just takes bad angles and is easy to beat deep. Landry is doing what is expected of him in his rookie year, and it IS allowing Taylor to contribute in other ways he couldn't last year. But at some point, someone is going to have to fix the gaping hole in deep pass coverage. Eventually teams are going to figure out that you can't hit the holes in the Redskins zone defense because Taylor is too aggressive and that the way to beat us is to be patient, and throw it deep late. Not that Okoye could have done much about this, but the pressure up the middle he would have provided could have been invaluable. In any case, Landry will do his job for us for a long time and we will probably remain relatively strong on defense for a long time. |

I didn't even think there were more than one or two deep passes completed against us so far. Either way, I think the more confident Taylor gets w/ Landry dominating routes and runners in the box he should cover the deep threat better and better. If he's getting beat toward end of season there is a problem. |

My point is that they all were there if the offense had connected.
Now that the nature of the deep pass, you can't always complete it even when its open. That doesn't excuse Taylor's angles to the ball, which are always an adventure to say the least. |

Who promised he would revolutionize the game? The media? Football people know he is going to need time like all rookies. He's only played 3 games. Let the guy learn like everyone else. Jerry Rice didn't do a damn thing his first year except drop a bunch of passes. Marvin Harrison didn't do anything til his 3rd year. Barely any rookies come in and take over the NFL. It just doesn't happen. I bet in a year or two from now the guy is going to be killing DB's. |
Re: Where Was Calvin Johnson?
Yeah, give him a couple years. The guy is just so big and drips pure raw talent that there is no way he won't be good.

Iwas looking at the same thing,I told the guys at work last night the same thing. He is missing somthing and I cant put my hands on it.I guess sean taylor and laron laundry would make you rethink yo major in school!

Before the draft I was one who thought CJ was the best pick out there and prayed he would fall to the Skins.
