What to do with Carlos Rogers????
I know its his 3rd season, and he's looked "ok" this year, although that depends on who you ask...BUT do you think we'll keep this experiment going or look to draft or free agency next year???
I'm asking because this guy is, at best, a #2 corner. How much longer can we hang on to this flop of a draft pick when their are other good corner available (FA or draft). |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
I disagree,
I think Rogers can be a #1 corner -- he has played very well this year -- besides that missed tackle against GB. He has a pick 6, some pass deflections, he committed pass interference twice, but he was being aggressive on those plays, which is okay. Not a great #1 corner, but a capable one. |

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
When Shawn Springs retires (which I'm gonna say will be within the next 2-3 years), Carlos Rogers will end up our #1 which gives him plenty of time to continue to get better. Granted he's no Champ Bailey but it'd be pretty dumb to try to look to draft something better now.

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
he's looked pretty "ok" to me, definately wouldn't feel comfortable with a carlos rogers vs. chad johnson, torry holt, lee evans, etc

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
THis is a ridiculous thread. He's missed two tackles this year (though I'd say he was pretty exhausted against the Gints when he played almost the entire second half). Other than that he's been very solid. Is he Champ Bailey? No, but who else is? He's better than anyone on probably 15 other teams and I have no problem with Carlos starting. BTW, wouldn't everyone agree they'd rather have Carlos over Pacman or Rolle who were both picked ahead of him?

That article about him last year where springs pretty much said he is unwilling to listen to player and coaches still bothers me. |

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
Carlos has been playing very well. He hasn't shown anything that would have me believe that he has what it takes to be elite, but he is going to end up being a very good corner and very good cornerbacks don't grow on trees.
|
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
Carlos has been playing better than all of our corners IMO. he looks like a 1st round pick. Sure he's not getting 6 or 7 picks a season but come on, he'll grow by the time he needs to become a #1 corner.
So far, he is having his best year. He hasn't dropped picks or missed many tackles. If anything, he has been a soild tackler. Why would you start this thread???? |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
every team in the NFL would take CR. He may be a #2 CB but he would be one of the top #2 CBs. The bigger question is what to do when he is up for free agency. CBs make bundles and I don't know if he'll be worth whatever contract he gets.

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
Too many vague statements here... "he's pretty good" or "he's not a flop." Come on now. Look at his technique. Rogers is one of the more aggressive corners in the league - look how he flies up to flatten receivers on lateral passes. His initial aggressiveness also bites the d in the ass when he hesitates a bit like in the NY game covering Plaxico.
And that gets to the biggest problem w/ Rogers and why he'll probably NEVER be a #1 corner: Rogers rarely has an eye for the ball and his receiver. His pick happened because he was standing back far enough to see QB and receiver (and he was in Kitna's blind spot). But when Rogers is defending a pass he almost always watches the receiver, which means he'll have relatively few picks over the span of his career and will allow some catches that should have been batted away. This is basically the first thing guys who have been around the league forever judge corners on. You'll see the very best corners watch the ball and "sense" the receiver nearby w/o getting called for PI. Watching the ball yields better pass defense and more INTs. It's pretty simple. |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
Yes, with an O-Line built out of bubble gum and bailing wire, a WR corps decimated with hammy and groin injuries, and two beat-up RB's, what to do with a productive member of the secondary that's gone from among the worst in the NFL to among the best in just 5 games this year...

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
Hate to be negative...
Rogers is a first round BUST! OVERRATED and OVERPAID!!! Love the Redskins, but Carlos doesn't challenge receivers at the line and gets burned easily with the pumpfake. I say trade Rogers asap! |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
Carlos isn't that good. I'd probably start Smootie over this fella. You guys are tryin to argue he's only had 2 mistackles.. remember one mistackle costed us the game. Also.. if you wrap urself around someone, u gotta bring them down. I doubt this guy will even get close to Spring's talent level anytime soon. After Springs retires, we definitely will need to find a true #1 CB.

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
good cover corners are hard to come by in this league. so far, Rogers has been pretty good. hopefully he will continue to develope. so the skins can work on getting line help for both sides of the ball

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
Anyone who thinks CR is bad just doesn't know what they are talking about. Is he the best CB in the league? No. Among them? No. Is he a starter for every team in the league? Just about. He is an above average CB who would be hard to replace through free agency without breaking the bank. We clearly have bigger needs when it comes to FA.

I agree, but I don't know that the Skins shouldn't look at grabbing a corner somewhere in the draft as long as it is around the 3rd round. I think they need to start getting younger at that position because I don't trust Smoot and Rogers to start and I don't even trust Shawn Springs to play every week. I don't think adding some more, young depth would be a bad idea. As for Rogers, I've been pretty critical of the guy, but he has stepped it up this year. He probably should have had a pick six on the play to Burress, but he didn't, then he compounded the problem by missing the tackle, it was an all around bad play. He had another blunder against Green Bay, however, I think he has played a lot better this season than last. He's starting to come around to where he has been defending passes. He already has 5 pass defenses this year and one pick that he took back to the house. I'm seeing a lot of improvement in his game this season. |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
Judging by what GW thinks of him Carlos is fine and isn't going anywhere...hopefully he'll improve over time.

Against the Lions, clearly the best D effort of the year, they were straight zone all afternoon and gave up the first five yards on almost every play. If CR had challenged receivers at the line he would have been out of position and given up a big play. I'd rather win games than make a fan who doesn't know the play call happy. |

carlos has a good attitude and will only get better............who do you want pacman jones..............talented but troublesome...............nah this is redskins......and attitude and hardwork is more important...........

Exactly. If I remember correctly, he was offered a pretty good contract which he turned down. The contract from Denver wasn't much more than what the Skins offered. I don't have the numbers but maybe someone here does. |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
It has long been my feeling that Carlos Rogers does not play the position with the mentality of an elite CB which he was drafted to be. You can ill afford to wiat four years for a CB drafted where he was to develop. Four yrs. at Auburn should have better prepared him to play the position.
I would like to see Carlos develop a better understanding of where the ball is when it's in the air, and where it relates to the receiver. Good CB's always know where the ball is when it's thrown in their direction, and not playing in a trail position. He needs to develop the mentality that when the ball is in the air in his area, "it his" He could also become a better open field tackler, he's missed two thus far this year that have led directly to TD's. He still has a ways to go to measure up to his lofty draft status. |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
I honestly don't see Rogers ever being a true shutdown #1 corner.
What bothers me about him is he continues to play the man and not the ball the majority of the time. That being said he's still a pretty decent corner, I think in order to label someone a bust it has to be proven that he can't play in this league at all, and he's far from a bust in my opinion. Has he lived up to the expectations of a player taken #9 overall? Clearly he has not. But he's still a player with some good skills and room to grow. Perhaps he'll prove us all wrong in time. |

Afer five years in the league, we will know who is right or wrong. J-Dawg |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
CR has def. improved this year. 2 missed tackles isn't something to be ashamed about. He isn't a horrible corner and he isn't a shutdown corner. He's just good. He makes his good plays and he makes his bad plays, and most cornerbacks do that. No he hasn't lived up to his high draft status yet but he's def. improved since last year. He does need to improve on some things though, like watching the ball instead of the receiver, but hopefully that will come with time.

Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
I thought he has stepped up just fine. If we do need another CB it will be to add depth if Springs or Smooty goes down. We need to draft linemen on both sides on the ball and a WR in the high to mid rounds. I just add the WR since Lloyd sucks and Santana needs to get healthy and stay healthy. I am starting to think he might be injury prone not after too long. Randle El can't be our only decent WR. McCardell is nice, but past his prime, and Caldwell hasn't done anything to my knowledge thus far. Always liked Thrash, but he isn't a top 1-3 WR at all. I would go with a WR for anywhere from rounds 1-3 next year. But as for CB, I think we are tight as can be.

ok, am i the only one on this board that doesnt think smoot should start. in my opinion it is a no-brainer who of the two to start, rogers.... |
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
I think that Rogers is close to being a very good corner. He dropped a ton of INTs last year, which tells me that at least he was in position to make plays. I believe that his biggest problem is locating the ball when he makes a defensive play. That will improve over time. While I don't believe that he'll be a pro bowler, Rogers will be a competent CB in this league for years.
|
Re: What to do with Carlos Rogers????
If he didn't drop those picks would this thread be up? So if he caught every ball thrown his way would he be a elite CB? If so he is a couple of hands adjusments from being a 1# CB
