12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
Am I guilty of being a homer by starting this thread, perhaps. But no more guilty than the pundits and talking heads chalking up a win for the Patriots this week.
I think there is a lot of cautious optimism surrounding this game, and for good reason. Even here on Warpath, our inner Redskin is telling us to believe...believe. So Skins fans, turn off your ESPN this week, light those scented candles, and stay plugged into Warpath until kickoff!! 1) The Defense: Plain and simple this is the best defense the Pats have faced all year. The Patriots are the only team in the NFL to score on every opening drive this season. Defensively, the Skins are right near the top in that same category. Get the picture? We stop them on their first drive and it sets the tone for, at the very least, the first half. Second half, that's another story... 2) Will the real Al Saunders please stand up: I'm betting on a master gameplan from coach Al Saunders. Coach Bill will throw a lot of different looks at JC and I don't think the three and out gameplan will cut it this week. Look for Saunders and Gibbs to attack early and often. I have a good feeling Saunders will give them enough reasons not to stack the box early in the game. This will be the other Moss' coming out party for 2007. You watch! 3) Special Teams: Derrick Frost will keep their offense on a long field and Rock Cartwright will give us good starting field position on returns. If so, this will drastically change the dynamics of the game. Field position, baby. 4) Sean Taylor: 12th, you just talked about the defense, didn't you? Yes, but Mr. Taylor will be to our defense on Sunday what Moss is to their offense. Sean Taylor has been the sole reason teams have been so ineffective going downtown on the Redskins this year, and he's licking his chops for pick #6 and #7. The Brady Bunch hasn't played such a saftey combo like this one. Look for Taylor to break up and pick a couple of Brady bombs early in the game, because you know they'll be flying. 5) Pride: I really think this team knows they are better than what they've showed so far, and New England had better be ready for a really ugly game. No one has really hit New England in the mouth this year, and the Redskins are just the team to kick them out of cruise control mode. I also get the feeling that this team responds well to, not so much adversity, but when everyone has counted us out and gives us no chance. As T.O. said, get your popcorn ready! |

Total homerism at it's best. NE is just a better football team. They have better players, and they are better coached. However, if we get a few turnovers and don't turn it over we have a chance. A small chance. |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
I'm not refuting any of that, but you can't deny what I've posted either. homerism or not.

My main concern is Gibbs. I'm sorry but the more I watch the more I kind of wish he would retire. I've had enough. Go upstairs and be team president. We can't go up to NE with some bullshit half ass ball control game plan on offense. We have got to start getting the ball to our wr's. We have got to get Santana more involved. We have got to try and get Lloyd the ball. These are suppose to be our big play guys and we have got to start getting these guys the ball downfield. If they drop it then so be it. At least try. |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
I have to be honest and say I really don't like our chances. It's going to take our best effort and the Pats to have an off day. I just hope we can keep it respectable.

If they think Washington will be a pushover, they're sadly mistaken. |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
I want to be a homer, I really do, but I just think this Patriots team is not the best team in the league this year, but maybe one of the best teams of all time in ANY YEAR. The 2007 Patriots are on the verge of becoming one of those historic teams that we will all be talking about in the future like the '85 Bears. Just a totally dominating team, that crushes everyone by 2 TDs or more everyweek. We all now see how great Brady is with real WRs. They are an All-star team playing wantabees. I know this is a downer of a post, but it is hard not to believe. Maybe things will change when the weather gets bad and their running game (which is the only weakness I see) has to perform and it can't, but time will tell.

They scored 49 against Miami and could have scored more. . We scored 13. What does that say about us? |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
You forgot the 6th reason, It's a Gibbs coached team , not Wade Phillips, Norv, etc. We will not get blown off the field like the rest, we will give more than they can handle.

They have a great offense but they do not have a great defense. People have been scoring points against them. |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
I think we will hang in early and like 12th said...the second half is another story. I don't think we get blown off the field because our D is that good to keep it within a couple scores.

Huh??? So GW has nothing to do with it? Where would we be w/out GW's defense this year? |

It says nothing, it's fuzzy logic that really doesn't mean anything. And we actually scored 16. |

If anything costs Washington the game, it will be the inability of the offense to score points, but it certainly won't be because of the defense. The only prediction I'll make this week is the Pats will have their lowest scoring output of the season. |

Defensive ranks for those teams may be overblown. After all, they had to play the Pats. That can't help your stats. My feeling with the Pats right now is that they haven't been the defensive team that they could be. The allowed 28 points to Miami - 21 after Ronnie "the Dolphins only offensive weapon" Brown was lost for the game (and season). Was the defense already celebrating the victory? If that's the case, it speaks volumes to their focus. Given that the media is already hyping next week's Pats/Colts game, we may be playing out as a classic "trap game". I don't think it will happen, though I know it can. |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
If your Redskins are in it by halftime and manage to cover the spread. You guys will be the first team to do this and should consider this a moral victory.

Who coaches the team Gibbs or Williams? Who hired Williams? I know the offense isn't up to par yet, but we do have an offense, we are not only a defense team. |

Washington has already faced some ridiculous passing attacks, and held them im check for the most part. I just don't see the Pats running away with this one unless the O line play is as poor as it was last week, and the offense is completely unable to sustain drives... so I guess I'm optimistic about the first half... |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
Tremendous post & living up to your name 12th, truly the post of the 12th man. Good points indeed.
I feel myself gradually ascending or descending (not sure which is accurate) into homerism w/each visit to the warpath this week. Maybe it's because there is an unusual lack of homerism this week. I really think 12th has good points, we are going to give Brady fits. He'll hit some stuff, but if we can stuff the run, GW will mix up coverages & force Brady to audible like he's never had to. I expect this to be a mean game. I'm concerned about our O, like everyone else is, but it occurred to me that maybe the AZ game was our Oakland game of 05. After that mess we came back & had a power running game the rest of the year & went on a roll. Maybe from here out our Offense gets a wake up call & we become a pass first team. It's obvious that's what these O linemen can do. Like 12th said, look for a real game plan from AS. Gibbs has already admitted this week that the plan was too conservative on sunday, so that's a sign that he may be willing to step aside some from the planning & let Al take it on his own more. I thought that happened after the Giants game as we came out in Detroit passing to set up the run. Look for that on sunday. |

First of all, welcome... and change your avatar. Second of all, that arrogance suits you very well. You're exactly what I'd expect a Pats fan to act like. |

Sorry Chris, we're past moral victories here in D.C. I remember when we played Indy a couple of seasons ago. It was the same thing. We had them at the half and let them off the hook. Like I said, if nothing else happens, the Pats will get hit this week. Put that in your over/under. |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
IF you look at it this way the Pats schedule of teams they beat are 17-28 (6-1 have come from the Cowboys) So maybe it not the Pats being so dominant its just they havent played anyone.
I am saying it if the Cowboys had a pass defense at all they would have beaten the Pats. The Pats are like LSU before they played Florida and Kentucky and Auburn. The Redskins defense will slow them down. |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
I don't see any logical explanation for why/how we'll beat New England. Sure it's possible. But if you're going to call it likely, you're not subscribing to the common sense newsletter, that's for sure.

Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
Don't score, play dead.
Sean Taylor, I like him. LaRon Landy, I like him too. Play with guts, get glory. Expect the worst, hope for the best. |

Thanks man I appreciate that. It should be a good game this Sunday. unfortunately your offense needs to figure out how to get first downs or your D will be wiped out by halftime. I see a lot of posters knocking Miami on this board, but they were the only team so far to limit the pats to 51 offensive possessions. Usually they are in the high 60's |

Common sense? Whoa, wait a minute? How does logic fit into this? I really hate to sound cliche, but the game is won between the lines. If we're going off stats, that's one thing. But the Skins are 4-2, they are a professional football team. They do boast one of the best defenses in football. And it's quite possible, they could have a chip on their shoulder this week. As far as I'm concerned that's as logical as any argument anyone could possilby post. |
Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
Do we really have a 5 game win streak over the Pats like I heard last night?

The defense is carrying the team right now and everybody knows it. And if you ask me, the defense has been very good here 3/4 years. The offense 1/4 years and the offense stunk at the end of 05. Don't you think that there is a problem with the guy who is in charge of it? Why are we always blowing 2nd half leads since he has been back? Even the players know it and are commenting on it. I'm not trying to be too hard on Gibbs but I just know Gibbs 1 was never like this. We were always burying teams when we got up on them. This crap I see now is not even the same guy who was here before. I'll use Clev. as an example. They are 3-3 but they had to play at Pitt and at NE. But I would say we have better talent on offense than they do. They are scoring points with Derek Anderson as the QB. I don't know their scores off hand but I know they scored over 50 and over 40 and they scored 27 or 28 against Balt. one of best defenses in the NFL. My question is why? Why are they scoring more with less talent? |

It's my beloved Redskins. They always win games they are not supposed to and lose games they are supposed to win.

Re: 12th's 5 Reasons Why The Skins Beat N.E.
Lots of points going to be scored in this one.
Both teams are going to throw, throw, throw. We are going to take away the deep stuff, and force them to throw short to intermediate. If we can get pass pro, I think we can go deep on this team. Lots of plays in this one will mean lots of points even if the offenses don't play well. |

Respectable? Gibbs takes over this weeks play calling (behind the scenes). Running game breaks out this week against the PATS. Some playaction bombs of our own are in store as well. We get back to smashmouth football and control the clock very well in this road affair. Run left, right, toss, pitch, sellers, portis, betts, and keep pounding and no turnovers! Kicking game big in this and we have a great punter. Defense needs to continue with a 4 man rush and Carter and company have a much better game. Our LB's need to play run when they are in tight and drop into aggressive zones when they spread us out. Sean Taylor plays deep all day to make sure Moss doesn't have that easy score. Springs and Rogers tight and looking to make plays. NO BLITZES EARLY! Brady will not be beaten by our blitz we will. Continue what they have been doing and we score another td on Defense here. We are by far the best defense they have faced and will beat them on Sunday. HAIL!!!!!! |

I'm glad you're not making the game plan this week. No way we beat them in a shootout in NE. We have to run and will get the rythm back this week. Our o-line will be MVP this week. Gibbs has just as many rings for the skins as Bill for NE. This is where the coaching is all worth it and Joe comes through here in the clutch. Rackers wide left!!! ITS OUR YEAR......... |
