Campbell takes losing hard
Thought this was interesting:
Link: washingtonpost.com - nation, world, technology and Washington area news and headlines Campbell's teammates continue to rally around him, with the second-year starter taking losses as hard as anyone in the organization. Campbell cried after Sunday's loss, angry with himself for a late-game interception on what overall was his best performance in the NFL. Gibbs called on Campbell to throw the ball 54 times to try to keep pace with the Cowboys, and the youngster responded in every way but ultimately pulling off the comeback. Campbell remained a harsh self-critic yesterday. "It's tough, we keep losing all these close games and we're playing so hard as a team," he said. "You're fighting your hearts out and it seems like things don't go our way towards the end of games" Tackle Chris Samuels, who struggled at critical junctures against Dallas linebacker DeMarcus Ware, was among those to console Campbell after the game. "We saw him crying in the locker room and that just shows how much Jason, how much passion he has for the game, how much he loves it," Samuels said. "He takes it really hard. And we all encouraged him and told him everybody makes mistakes. Even I had mistakes in the game. You've just got to stay encouraged and let it roll of your shoulders and bounce back." Said Gibbs of Campbell's emotion, "That's probably something you can't manufacture and you can't hide, and I think it shows up in the way he plays and I think that will continue to be the case with him." |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
I read this earlier today, I was kind of surprised he cried and all. Talk about heart!
This really is a good sign, and it's good to see the team rally around him at the same time. The offensive line will block like hell for a guy like this. |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
Wow, Kid wants it, that's for sure. Great to see but i'm sure he didn't want the crying thing public. Eh, who knows, maybe he doesn't care. More power to him. He sure seems like the real deal so far, doesn't he?

I doubt he cares that it got out. If these guys don't have some fire in their eyes this week, nothing will help them. |

I really think we're right around the corner, I really do. Problem is we only have six games to get it done. I hate to say it, but if the coaches can continue to "get out of the way", we'll be something to contend with. |

Yeah it really does. |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
I think they figured it out already, watch this weekend's game. You have to love Campbell, a classy, humble, tough individual. He's reminding me of Art Monk.

Re: Campbell takes losing hard
I'm just waiting for someone to bash him for crying.

Here. His teammates don't seem to have a problem with it and I don't see why they would. Some fans on the other hand... |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
I'm sure Matty is talking about around here. it to me its refreshing to see a player that actually cares enough about winning to break down alittle bit
|
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
It'd be the same people constantly wishing injury to Romo or any other player we face.

Re: Campbell takes losing hard
This guy is a gem. Say what you will about Gibbs' coaching record this time around, but if he delivers us the franchise QB that we haven't had in decades, everyone should be kissing Gibbs' ass.
This is a QB-centric league and it is extremely difficult to be a great team without a great quarterback. There are teams like the Ravens and the Bucs that have historically had success without solid QBs under center, but they are the exception to the rule. It should come as no surprise that we've had trouble fielding a great team in the past decade or so given that we have been relying on guys like Tony Banks and Shane Matthews to lead our offenses. If JC turns out to be the kind of QB we have all been looking for, this franchise is set up for a good run and many self-proclaimed experts will attribute our success to better coaching, better moves by the front office, better play by the players at skill positions, etc. when in reality our success will come down to having a guy under center who can make plays. |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
Gibbs has an unbelievable ability to judge QBs, even when most of the football population can not. He took a huge risk in sending Ramsey to the way side because he obviously thought he can do better. The early returns show that he was correct.
There are only a few things that seperate a historically great coach from a run-of-the-mill good guy, but Gibbs has that in spades. |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
I also heard that before the game Smoot was going off in the locker room getting the team pumped up for the game.

I think its pretty gay truthfully. If he's that upset I think he should try waiting untill he's alone to cry. Maybe if this was the superbowl or a really big playoff game, but it was just a away game vs. our arch rival that we had a decent shot at winning. I dont think having the most involved player on the team crying in front of everyone else insprisers everyone to play harder. I personally would take offense to it if he were my QB.... Dude get a grip! |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
I was disappointed in the result of the game. but so proud of our team. Wheither we make the playoffs or not, next year should be great under Campbell.
Ultimately who cares about this year anyway, the Patriots are SO GOOD that I am really just waiting for Brady to win another one so that maybe some of those Patriots will retire and give the rest of the league has a chance! |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
I like it he is taking it so hard.
If lossing is ok with you, yer a LOSER. As for the tear. That game me cry too didn't it you?!?!?!?!?! lol Now, it's all behind us. Let's go win!!!!! Hail Skins |

I have to agree. I've been a skeptic most of the season, picking against the Skins a few times because I just didn't think they had what it takes yet, but I'm starting to get excited about what they could do to close out the season. If the secondary can hold up and not give away such big plays, I think this team can be dangerous, despite the myriad numbers of injuries. I hope JCs passion is contagious...they could really make a statement this week in Tampa Bay. |

I have a good feeling (sorry Schneed) that people will give Gibbs more credit for revitalizing the franchise after he leaves than while he was here. It's funny no one is saying we gave up too much for Campbell now. But didn't we give up two picks and not three? Why do I keep hearing three picks? I'm confused. But you can sorta see some of the pieces fall into place. |

All the qb's Gibbs has every really had have been run of the mill servicable qb's. He has however been able to get all of them to play very well at times. |

The kid has a lot on his shoulders right now, and as long as he remains cool and collected on the field, then what does it matter if he gets a little emotional afterwards. To be honest I wanted to cry after the game, and I EXPECT my QB to have AT LEAST as much emotion as I do, I think it is endearing, humbling, and it will give his team reason to fight even harder for him. |

Nowadays, I don't believe system QB's exist, but back in the day I feel there were some pretty good examples, and Gibbs pushed all the right buttons and found guys cheap that could do the job for him (Schroeder, Williams, Rypien, etc.) |

Actually, Campbell doesn't wear his feelings on his sleeve at all. He's pretty even keel, which makes this even more eye opening. I do think he was kidding though. |

Re: Campbell takes losing hard
My guess that it might be an indication of the pressure he's facing and a lot of built up things. I also suspect it was not so much about losing the game, but rather his feeling that HE lost the game for his teammates (I'm sure he was up pretty late thinking about the Moss overthrow and the Terrance Newman INT). If he starts crying after every game then we might have to get Dick Vermeil in here to coach the team, but I think in this instance you can certainly understand where that sort of emotion was coming from. He took the loss personally, he felt like it was his fault, but he'll watch the film, he'll get better, and we'll go beat Tampa on Sunday. I mean, hey, we can't all be tough guys who call guys out from behind the saftey of a computer screen...

You have no idea what the hell your talking about. Your the guy who probably never played sports in life but were the 1st one to make fun of the people who do. |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
Well I personally love this about the guy. I am one who can become very emotional and passionate about the things I am involved in. This past April I competed in my first road race after 2 years of battle with a used race car, a 1998 acura integra type R, I had purchased to go road racing with NASA in the Honda Challenge series with the dream of one day becoming a national and regional champion in the class. This past year I won my regional chapionship and got knocked around a bit at Nationals (so that will be next year, God Willing).
` I own and operate a race team in SC. We have 2 cars and my partner has been racing for 5 years. When my time finally came to get in the car and run I broke down and cried after the race. I had finished 1st in class and 15th overall in a group of 55 cars. Those tears were more of relief and joy though. So I understand and admire his passion for the game and also can grasp his feelings towards competition. I have also shed my share of tears in defeat and wouldn't trade my feelings and passion for anything. So Jason weres his heart on his sleeve. Doesn't care who sees him. Now I have one more thing I really respect about him. |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
"theres no crying in football"
 |
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
JC has a ton of heart, I wonder if his hand injury is from punching a wall in the locker room from being so upset?
|
Re: Campbell takes losing hard
You have to feel for the kid... I know he'll be taking flack for crying in the locker room, but I'm soo glad to see someone in there who actually cares. He's one of the only couple of redskins who know the words to "Hail to the Redskins" that may not mean anything to some of us but it impressed me alot, and after the past 2 weeks, the kid has sold me completely.... I just hope the team rallies around him and elevates their play to match that emotion...
football is an emotional game... even when Im playing madden I'll get so elated after a good win (not total domination, but a game that you couldve lost if you hadn't made that one move, or called that one play and its the only reason you won...) and I'll get infuriated after I lose... I didn't feel that way as much when I was playing football, because I was on the D line... I wanted to win, but didn't feel like if we didn't it was because I whiffed that one tackle or didn't take out the fullback running around the corner. I couldn't imagine shouldering that much responsibility and coming up short. I'm glad also that he's taking being a redskin seriously... putting so much into a rivalry... It really seems like he loves being a redskin, which is something you don't get in most players. |
