Retire #21
Does anyone know what the steps are to have a players number retired? Is there a public outcry that should be made? I just want to ensure that some douche (ie Deion Sanders) never gets to adorn #21 for the washington redskins
|
Re: Retire #21
I could never see anyone wear that jersey number ever again. So why not retire it.

interesting you said that, i had just changed my signature.... |
Re: Retire #21
Couldn't agree more. #21 is Sean Taylor's. Always will be.
|
Re: Retire #21
I agree. Hopefully the Redskins do the right thing and retire Sean Taylor's #21 jersey.
|
Re: Retire #21
Retire #21 and put him in the ring of honor asap, like next year so nobody gets a chance to forget the memories that he gave us!
|
Re: Retire #21
Why not do it at the Bears game?
|
Re: Retire #21
Well, the only number the Skins have officially retired is 33. While Taylor was a good player, I can think of many guys ahead of him in line to get the official retirement (44, 28, 9, 81 etc, etc etc)
|
Re: Retire #21
The Redskins could just make #21 "unavailable" pending any formal retirement ceremony...although I doubt any other player would want to wear it.

I think the point is, Taylor didn't have the chance to ascend to the level of the guys you mentioned(although, he was well on his way). Also, all of the guys you mentioned are old men, or at least will be at some point. Sean Taylor will never have that opportunity... |

Re: Retire #21
We've had a lot of good players wear #21 in the past:
Mike Nelms, Terry Allen, Deion Sanders, and Fred Smoot, but none of them captured our imagination the way Sean Taylor did. I would be fine with at least unofficially retiring #21, the way we have unofficially retired #9, #44, and perhaps one or two others. The only officially retired Redskins jersey is Sammy Baugh's #33. |

I think this is a much different situation. This is a player that was robbed of his opportunity to truly establish himself as one of the all time great players in the NFL. He didn't get to have a long career for fans to remember. He had a few short years and then was taken from us, way before his time. For that reason, it is right to retire his jersey so that we can at least make sure that no one forgets him for both the great player that he was and the hall of famer that he could have been. |

i could see a player wanting to wear it as a tribute...
as for retiring the number, not likely to happen...we don't retire numbers (as has been mentioned- they are just not assigned). |
Re: Retire #21
The Celtic's retired Reggie Lewis number after he passed. There is no reason the Redskin's should not do the same.
My god think of all the legender players the Celtics had, it is a no brainer the Redskins should retire 21. |
Re: Retire #21
no Do it at the Dallas game.

Re: Retire #21
Last night when they showed Snyder doing a short interview he looked as if he had seen a gost. I heard that they had become very close over the years and I'm sure Snyder will do his best to honor ST.

Re: Retire #21
I disagree with officially retiring his number. I think retiring his number now would be only because of the way he died. I think that we should remember and honor his life. His accomplishments on and off the field, not just the fact that it ended too soon. I actually would like to see CP or another close friend wear his number for the rest of the year and unofficially retire it in the offseason. When someone's life ends I try not to focus on the end of their life but on the life they lived and those that are left behind.

Re: Retire #21
Retire # 21.

Re: Retire #21
not to rain on this parade. but if Riggins, Monk, and Joey T. cant get their numbers retired by the skins.....

I never really thought of that.. That is a great idea, if either Moss or Portis switched to #21 |

that is a great idea. I wonder if it will happen. I was thinking of one of Sean's peculiarities his various alterations of the uniform, whether it was the socks or the tape on his fingers. I wouldn't mind seeing the guys do some of that as well. And we know Portis has no problem paying a fine to express himself. |

I totally forgot that he originally wore #36 when he first started. |
Re: Retire #21
I would love to see someone tribute ST like the wearing of his number, water works would turn on everywhere when that happens....

Re: Retire #21
I think that they should retire his number too! I am devastated as well. I really can't believe this has happened and feel like this is surreal, similar to how they were explaining the sentiment at Redskins Park. He will be greatly missed as a person and a player. I feel deeply sorry for his family and friends as they lost a son, a father, brother, fiance, a friend. He is irreplaceable and I know that we will never forget his play on the field as fans and more importantly the person he was becoming. I love the way he played, the sky the limit for him with his tremendous talent (he was having his best season ever and a sure pro baller as well though that is extremely minor in respect to this horrific heart piercing tragedy) and I loved the way the Redskins players called him Sean "BIG HURT" Taylor. I know that he will always be in our hearts.

I agree, there are too many great players that should have their number retired before they retire 21. |
Re: Retire #21
I thought about starting a thread about this, but figured I'd just keep it in the tribute thread.
Just like the Eagles did for Jerome Brown, I think it should be done here. While we're at it, retire the other jersey's too. #44, #9, #28, #7, #81. |
Re: Retire #21
I agree that they need to do something but there is one thing that Snyder really needs to do. That is to put a very large bounty out for any information leading to the arrest of ST killer.

Re: Retire #21
I also favor the idea of one of his closer friends on the team wearing 21 for at least the next game, and then officially or unofficially retiring it.

Re: Retire #21
#21 shouldn't even be though of being worn again

Re: Retire #21
I have created a petition for us to sign in hopes of retiring the #21 jersey.
Wasn't there a member of the over the hill gang that got hit by a car and killed on the dc beltway?
It was Harold McLinton, he played 10 years for the Skins 69-78. It think it's appropriate in a tragedy like this to call for Taylor's number to be retired, but I would prefer the organization keep to their traditions and simply take his number out of circulation like thay have for other Redskin greats. If CP or Santana wore his jersey for the remainder of the season in tribute, that would be very fitting as well. |
Re: Retire #21
I disagree with retiring his number... as had been said by several others.... to many greats have not had that. Many players for different reasons have had incredible tenures with the team, only to be cut short by injury etc. I do agree that it should be worn by Portis for the remainder of the season. If memory serves, Portis had lobbied hard for us to draft ST back then.
After that, I think it should be out of circulation for several years, but not retired. Many numbers have been out of circulation are occasionally worn by other players... i.e. 42 & 49 |
Re: Retire #21
Even if the front office doesn't retire the number I can't believe anyone would wear it.

I think that #21 should not be retired just yet, maybe bring into consideration once everyone is healed. |
Re: Retire #21
Certainly in the current environment there will be a lot of calls to retire #21. I don't think this will occur as there are many numbers the Skins should, but do not, retire due to their unofficial policy against this act.
I think they should shutdown the number 21 for a few years, then draft Anthony Leon, Sean's cousin who plays safety for FSU, and give him number 21... |
