I am sure they are Locked into FedEx field for a long time,I doubt they will be going anywhere for a while...on the other hand it would be nice to move the stadium back.

The Redskins are cursed at Fedex. They need to move back to RFK.

The stadium is so big and expensive, we'd lose revenue by downgrading.

the rumors i've heard has rfk being torn down and snyder building a new stadium on that site, possibly a dome stadium so a superbowl could be played there.

I actually read that the land in pg county where fed ex field is very valuable and that it could be torn down for strip malls and shopping and snyder would do just fine.

I myself never had the privilege of attending a Redskins game at RFK. I have seen old films of how the stadium would shake. But videos just don't do justice to it, I really wish I could have been there. Sadly I was born a few years too late. As for the Skins moving back, I don't think it's going to happen. At least not for the next 5-10 years. I'm sure Danny payed a lot to get that stadium built and I don't think he's just going to give it up after 10 years.

Just a slight correction. Jack Kent Cooke built the stadium, Snyder purchased it along with the team.

Probably has more to do with the curved top of RFK than anything. As lucrative as the Skins have been for Snyder, I can definitely see him building a new stadium where RFK stands. One of his big dreams has been to bring a Super Bowl to DC, and I've heard rumors that he would like to build a new stadium with a retractable roof to help make the dream reality. Lastly, Snyder didn't build FedEx field, Jack Kent Cooke did. Snyder made improvements after calling the stadium "a fixer upper", so I don't think he feels overly attached to FedEx.

Your right I forgot that Jack Kente Cooke built it, which would explain why it had it's name on it in the beginning. I was at the first game ever played in FedEx Field but I was rather small and probably didn't know much of what was going on (I was in 1st grade or 2nd grade), I still have the tickets though.

I have heard from stadium employees that Snyder is planning to move back to DC in 7 years.

Pretty cool that you got to be there live.

That's what I would do, tear down old RFK with mixed emotions and build a brand new state of the art stadium without a dome. Domes are not real football stadiums, maybe a retractable dome and even so, I still don't like domes.

Re: Latest On The Skins Stadium Moving Back To DC???

I really hope we don't have a dome. Domes aren't football. I understand a team like Minnesota or Detroit having them because some games you simply couldn't play outside because it would be so could but we don't have that situation. I believe football should be played with the elements. Maybe a retractable roof so we could host a Superbowl.

RFK is close to my heart, and without question a louder stadium than FedEx. It also had a better energy, but then maybe it had to do with all the winning. I've been to a few Nationals game, and the minute I walk into the stadium, the memories come back – the playoffs, the championships, the Monday night game when LT broke Joe’s leg, the hailstorm of 55,000 yellow seat cushions after a championship TD. Oh, and the drunk fans on the metro.

Whenever they demolish RFK, I've got a make a plan to get a brick.

In light of the outpouring of support and online tributes that Dallas Cowboy fans have extended to us this week, your signature "romo is a homo" is inappropriate, not to mention unoriginal.

I would love to see the Skins move back to DC. The rumors I've heard is a 125,000 seat stadium, with a retractable roof on the current RFK site. That would be awesome. The site of RFK is easily assessable for all Skins fans and direct metro access is much more accommodating and the atmosphere at FedEx is not that great.

Re: Latest On The Skins Stadium Moving Back To DC???

Well, there's no question that FedEx Field has never meant "Home Field Advantage" to the Redskins. Since the stadium has opened, they are just as likely to lose there as they are away.

But when you think about it, there's really only one truly intimidating stadium I can think of, and that's Quest Field where the Seahawks play. Every other place is tough only because the team is tough.

Cowell 12-01-2007 03:53 PM

Re: Latest On The Skins Stadium Moving Back To DC???

I don't Oakland has the Black Hole, Philly is tough, and Arrowhead is tough to play in too.

Re: Latest On The Skins Stadium Moving Back To DC???

Other than the 2002 season, nobody's been intimidated to play at Oakland since the 1970's. And the Raiders just beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead. Those places, along with Philly are known to have pretty roudy fans, but besides that, I don't know if they really fit the "intimidating" label.

I know one thing, Fed Ex doesn't come anywhere near that label. Assemble yourself a better team that always wins at home, then your stadium is suddenly tough to play at.

I went to a game against the Giants in the 80's where Dexter Manley had 4 sacks during two three-and-out series. The poor Giants left offensive tackle had zero chance of hearing a snap count, so he lost any edge as Dexter blew by him play after play. RFK was a scary place for other teams during those days.

Can't happen for at least 20 years .It would cost the Danny one hell of alot of money to get out of Maryland.

if memory serves it wasn't named for Cooke until after he died. RFK was great. many memories there, I personaly would hate to see it go. I grew up seeing the old Diplomats play soccer there, the skins and the Dead every summer. that place is part of my life. I understand the need for progress and realize that it can't stand forever. But I will be sad when it is gone.

On another note. Back in October while on the metro on my way with my son to his first game, we came out of the ground right by RFK and he asked what it was, I told him what it was and shared some memories, which sparked the whole car and everyone was talking about RFK memories the rest of the ride.

The Stadium was named "Redskins Stadium" by JKC. After his death it was changed to Jack Kente Cooke Stadium by his son. Snyder changed it to Fed/Ex Stadium.

RFK was louder and more fun I think and the Stadium and Team needs to come back to Wash DC. Tear down the old RFK build a stadium like Dallas is and attract the Super Bowl. Sell the old stadium and land for zillions.

Yeah, knock down RFK, and erect Sean Taylor Field in its place.

Think its a requirement to have a covered field for a SuperBowl.. So Danny would have to either build a dome or a stadium with a retractable roof to have a chance at his dream.

Re: Latest On The Skins Stadium Moving Back To DC???

Yep the suits at the NFL are scared to death of a game being uncomfortable for folks (businesses) so you better either be a warm weather destination or have a dome.

The Super Bowl is not about football fans, it is about the corporate sponsors who pay lots of money throughout the year to have their names plastered over everything.

Really? Two summers ago I was in DC for an afternoon, fiancee and I took a detour to see the sites after being in Quantico. We were going to go to a Nationals game, but gave up after driving around for about 45 minutes looking for the stadium. We didnt have directions, was a last minute decision, just a sign for the stadium, followed it, but then no more signs, and no stadium.

Soupmeister - they could have a field like the Arizona Cardinals that literally rolls in under the stadium from the outside, although I think Synder would do a retractable roof so he could open up the stadium on nice days. If a new stadium is built you can gurantee it will be a dome and most likely a retractable roof - having the Superbowl here is just too big a draw not to do it. One other thing though - I would hope that since Jerry Jones is putting 60 yard HDTV's in the new Dallas stadium that the Skins would try to do the same thing - the reply screens at Fed Ex are not too good.

As far as getting out of Fed Ex - I beleive the Skins have 20 years left on the bonds that were issued by Maryland but as many have said you could sell the land at Fed Ex for development (retail and office and not residential due to housing issues) and probably have more than enough to pay off the State of Maryland. Interestingly enough Synder may be waiting becuase I would bet that as the years go by the penalties to leave Fed Ex will go down - so maybe in 10 years the Skins will move back?

One other point to consider is if they moved back to the old RFK site you can be sure that Synder will have to more than make up for all the lost parking revenue he currently gets at Fed Ex - either through higher ticket prices or a bigger stadium. I don't know how many parking spaces there are at Fed Ex that he gets money from but it is a lot. I know Orange Parking tickets go for around $125 per ticket to give you an idea of how much is made on parking.

JKC wanted to tear down RFK, but there was such an uproar about it, the idea was scrapped. Then, the secret deal fell apart to build a stadium at Potomac Yard. Remember that? Then, with no other options it seems, he decided to build on the site of the current FedEx field. In freaking landover! I HATE that place. It's not close to anything!
There was nothing like redskins games at RFK. They spent millions refurbishing it for the 2 years the Nationals have been playing...I hate to see them tear it down...but I guess it does make sense to build a retractable roofed stadium, if you are going to build a stadium at all. I would love to see 1 more game at RFK. Now that would be cool.
