Patriot Helmet Stickers
Every team I saw play today had 21 on their helmets. Pats have 91. Am I missing something?
|
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Was it required for all teams to wear 21 throughout the rest of the season?
|
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Why do the Patriots wear the number 91 on the back of their helmets?
Answer The Patriots are wearing circular stickers on the backs of their helmets with the number 91 on them, in honor of their teammate, the late Marquise Hill. Marquise Hill (August 7, 1982 - May 28, 2007) was an American football defensive end for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. Hill attended De La Salle High School in New Orleans where he was named as an All-American and the best defensive lineman in the nation by many publications. Hill then played college football in Louisiana State University and was drafted by the Patriots in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft. Hill played in one game in 2004 and played in eight games in the 2005 season, making three tackles. On the evening of May 27, 2007, Hill and his friend, Ashley Blazio, fell off a jet ski in Lake Pontchartrain, north of New Orleans. Neither was wearing a personal flotation nor tracking device. Blazio was rescued and sent to Tulane Medical Center. Coast Guard units searched the area, and Hill's body was found by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries around 2:15 PM CDT on May 28. Hill had spent much of his time in the days after Hurricane Katrina helping residents rebuild their homes. He was the first New England Patriots player to die while still a member of the team. For the 2007 NFL season, the Patriots team will wear a "91" insignia (Hill's number in his tenure with New England) on the back on their helmets in honor of his life. Source: Wikipedia |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
The league made the "21" sticker optional for all teams after the first week. Some teams wore them today, some did not.
The Skins will wear the stickers and the patch for the rest of the season. |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
I saw Dallas and Philly wearing #21. The Giants weren't though.
cypane is right, the #21 sticker is optional |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
All of the games I watched today the players had #21 on their helmet. This just gives me another reason to hate the patriots. I think it is completely disrespectful. Probably came straight from the head coach.

Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
could an individual player wear it? i know the patriots have at least on guy from the U
|
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
I would expect nothing less from the league's least classy franchise. Their owner is a drunk, their coach is a punk, and their QB is an arrogant pretty boy.
|
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
yeah i saw that. I'm sure they'll turn it into "motivation" that no one is wearing 91 stickers but them...
god i hate them. I used to really have respect for them, but not after this year. fuckem and by the way fuck you too DieHardSkinsFan777 you are a moron |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
I'm sure to some extent they're saying "Why not the same for Marquise Hill?" But, as cold as this may sound, a drowning accident in the offseason is not perceived the same as being murdered during the season. Not because it's less important or significant. But because of the timing of it. The NFL is at the forefront of sports news in the fall (compared to the spring time) and so an in-season death is just going to be perceived as more impactful, and especially when it's a sudden and senseless death like Sean Taylor's.

Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
They are trash.

Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Not everyone had the stickers. Most of the Chargers didn't (I think Cromartie did, though). The Broncos kept all three stickers (27, 29, and the black 21). I can't remember all the teams that did or did not have the 21 stickers. I've watched a number of the games on the Ticket today, though, and it's not just the Patriots, though they conspicuously do not. It seemed like it was about 50/50, since it seemed like in a lot of games one team had the 21 stickers and the other didn't. Probably a little better than 50/50 though.

Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Flipping through the teams currently playing:
Browns: Yes Jets: No Chiefs: Yes Broncos: Yes Seahawks:Looks like most do, Kerney definitely, Trufant just scored and he does. Cardinals: No, but Antrel Rolle does, Kurt Warner does. Patriots: No Steelers: Yes 49ers: Yes Vikings: Yes Looks like it might be optional on an individual basis. Most teams seemed to have decided as teams, but most Cardinals players don't have the stickers. |

The only two teams that I saw that didn't were the Pats and the Giants. In any event, does it really surprise anyone that when the Patriots are one of the few teams to not do it? I don't mean to make it a bigger deal than it is, but I have grown to despise the Pats. It has nothing to do with their dominance (which I respect), it has to do with their utter lack of class. Between Belichick cheating on his wife, Belichick cheating in the game, Brady dumping his pregnant girlfriend for a supermodel, Belichick shoving reporters, Belichick publicly denigrating Mangini, Brady being an arrogant a**hole in press conferences, Belichick running up the score just to boost his own ego, Roosevelt Colvin doing the Lights Out dance after the victory over the Chargers in the playoffs, Jabar Gaffney mocking the Eagles' wings, etc. I hate that team with a burning passion. |

Gonna get beat up, but here goes. It is optional for every player. The Pats are unified as a team and do things of this nature together (for good or bad). They could have worn both, but IMO they probably would rather keep Hill's memory alive when no one else in the NFL was. I think trying to compare tragedies of this nature is disgusting, but no doubt Sean's murder affects us more as Skins fans and NFL fans more because Sean was such a dominating player and fun to watch. Personally, I feel that Darrent Williams should have had his number on helmets for at least the first game. And before people ask, no I don't like the Pats. |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Have the pats been wearing 91 all season or all of a sudden?

And Hill was not nearly as well liked or important to his repective team as the pro bowler Taylor. As you say, it's a lot different to be shot and killed during the season as well. |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Jsarno -- ask the pats that. What a ridiculous statement. Hills life wasn't as important or well liked. Come on. You don't know if Hill was liked. The Taylor thing is a tragedy, but so is Darrent Williams and Marquise Hill.
If teams don't want to wear stickers every week, so be it. Did the Redskins wear the sticker of other players that died? The answer is no. It's just a sticker when it boils down. It's not a big deal. Many of these players have absolutely no connection to Sean Taylor, and those that do can honor him in many ways, including the sticker. |

Well I wouldn't say he was not nearly as well liked. I'm sure he was very well liked by his teammates. I've never heard otherwise. |

Well, he was well liked by his team, but not a lot of the league, like Taylor. That was my point on that. Even the casual fan knew Sean Taylor, but only the die hard pats fans knew Hill. Daseal, take it easy, I am not devalueing a life here. Just pointing out why the #21 was on everyone's helmets but #91 was not. No need to get offended over nothing. |

Lions didnt either

You can't compare or rank tragedies, but obviously a player being murdered in his own home on a Sunday night is going to strike a chord across the league. It is not about popularity at all, would love to know how you came to find out that "even the casual fan knew Sean Taylor." I guess you mean after his passing. |

The Pats have no class what so ever I HATE THE PATS!!! They should wear the #21 out of respect of ST for the rest of the year!!! |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
I don't think this is such a huge deal or indicative of whether or not anyone has class.
|
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Yeah, I don't dislike any team any more for not wearing it. As emotional as that MNF game was last Monday with Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Willis McGahee all paying tribute, the Ravens aren't wearing the 21 sticker tonight. I know we're all emotional over Sean, but as long as the Redskins are properly honoring him I'm okay. I'm not worried about anyone else except our guys.

Don't know about that -- Marquise Hill lost his life while rescuing a drowning friend. That strikes a chord, too. The hatred and jealousy that some of you have for the Patriots is staggering. I only wish our franchise were run with as much competence, preparation, skill, imagination, and long-term planning. |

He died because he was jet skiing without a life jacket. And the "friend" if I remember correctly, was a woman that was not his wife/fiancee. |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Bleed -- from what I remember, he saved her while dying himself. Why people go out on something like that without a life jacket is besides me. I'm a very strong swimmer, and I won't go out and do water sports without a life jacket, or at least water wings!
Even canoing, I watched a guy drown right in front of me on the Shenandoah River because he tipped and got sucked in by an undertow. It doesn't take a lot to drown and a life jacket will do much better at pulling you up. (Strangely enough, the person that died was the Brother of one of my step-dad's clients in Michigan, small world) |

I believe that she hung on to a buouy and he never made it to her, but did try to talk calmly to her and reassure her--which is definitely honorable. And yeah, I have a speed boat, I go wakeboarding every weekend during the summer. To do anything out on the water without a lifejacket on is a bad idea beyond description. |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
I don't care much about the other teams outside our division, but for respect sake, it would have been nice to see the Giants wear the sticker (making it every team in the East -- Philly and Dallas did).

Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Are people really getting up in arms over a helmet sticker?
 |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
The Pats already have a sticker for their own teammate. I didnt see the Skins or any other team wearing 91 stickers to honor the Pats fallen teammate.

Yes they have. |
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Everyone needs to chill out. People are just finding another way to bitch and moan about The Pats. I didn't have a problem with it.
|
Re: Patriot Helmet Stickers
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Pats had their #21 stickers on for their game with the Ravens this past Monday night, and I believe last weekend was the only required weekend that teams were supposed to have the stickers on. What each team and each individual does is their own business. Class or respect has very little to do with it. The Pats paid their respects and decided to move on. Other teams have decided to leave them on. So be it.
