THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I know its early, but there are 3 very good corners on the market this upcoming season (Marcus Trufant, Asante Samuel, & D'angelo Hall)...Should we look to invest considering Spring is prob gone after this season?? More importantly, will we have enough to invest in one of these guys with our current cap situation
|
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
Trufant and Samuel are worth looking at but I would definitely pass on Hall. Too much of a headcase and he thinks he's much better than he really is.
|
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I'm wondering ST's salary affect on the cap and if we would be eligible for cap relief due to him no longer being on the roster. I'd be interested to see how Denver and New England handled this with the League. Its sad to even think about this......

This has been discussed by Charlie Casserly among others and they have indicated that there is virtually no chance the Redskins will get any meaningful salary cap relief as a result of Taylor's passing. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I really like Trufant but at this point we have enough talent at CB compared to some other roster spots. We really need to address the offensive and defensive lines this year.

I disagree about having enough talent at CB. Plus, here's something that no one is really talking about yet: The NFL is a follow the leader league. There will be a lot of teams trying to copy the Pat's style next season, there will be alot of passing going on and we'll need to defend it. The only unit I feel confident in, heading into next season is our linebacking corps. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
Right now, we're already 20 million over the 2008 salary cap. This will change once they convert some bonuses, but it should definitely keep us from being a player in this free agent class, unless Vinny Cerratto can work some salary cap magic...
|
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I don't think it's such a lock that Springs is gone.
And if we do keep him, I still think we should draft a CB in the first round to groom into a starter in a year or two (Talib or Cason remain my favorites); though I keep hearing Derrick Harvey attached to the Redskins come draft time. Still early though. If we do go the free agent route, I think we should keep any eye on Nnamdi Asomugha (sp?) from the Raiders. I think he can and will opt out. And he's the type of big, physical cornerback that Williams likes. |

Asante Samuel battled with he Pats not to be franschised this year. He agreed to take the tag and the 7 mil under the stipulations that the team would not re-franchise him in 08 if he participated in 60 % of the snaps and the team won 10 games... The patriots will most likely lock him up long term Are there any D-Line free agents in the market next year?? |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
Asomugha -- if he opts out and we can get him, I would be THRILLED. A buddy of mine is a raiders fan, so I see some games. This kid is great. Big and Fast.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I say focus on the offensive line first, the defensive line second, then worry about everything else.

I second that, plus he's tall. I think he could be a bargain compared to the others. With our #1 pick, we should go for either a DE or WR, then consider OL and DB. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
20 million in the red is a bad place to start free agency. Convert some bonuses and restructure some deals, it will still be hard for this team to compete with oither teams for the talents of a Asante Samual, Trufant.
Dallas is 20 Million in the black on the cap and you KNOW they will be shopping for some big-time talent in the secandary when free agency starts. |

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
How about the Skins stay out of the free agent market for a year and stick with what they got and build through the draft? I know this is not the popular route and "winning the offseason championship" creates excitement, but if we restructure the contracts to get under the cap and start the youth movement by rebuilding through the draft I think the team will be in a better position in the long run.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
we have 3 legit starting corners, we will loose 1 probably at the end of this year. carlos rodgers is coming off a major injury and will not be able to start 100% next year (its a 2 year injury).
Even so, i think he'll never be more than a #2 corner...why not look at a #1?? Trufant, Hall, Samuel...these guys are solid corners and its rare talents to all be on the market at once...its a great oppurtunity to get corner for less money. |

Just because there are 3 high profile corners on the market at the same time does not mean there is an oversupply of corners on the market. All 3 of these guys are going to get huge contracts and the Skins are not even be in the running for any of them. Teams around the league are always gunning for good corners and unfortunately there a quite a number of teams that have a huge surplus of cap space that will be willing to spend the big bucks for all three of these guys. One nice thing the cap problems bring to the Redskin organization is that it will eventually force them to stop building the team through the free agency method - soon the Skins will have to follow their player personelle research and build via the draft and hopefully they will prove their worth when they do pick players via the draft. Lets stop the word that NFL players use when talking about the Burgundy and Gold - you know the saying "I came to the Redskins to get paid". I want this team to be built through the draft and stop being known in NFL circles as the place players get overpaid. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
because when the market is flooded with a specific position, it lowers the bargaining price. That’s basic economics whether you are negotiating free agents in football or a construction contract, the more competition the greater chance of a bargain. 3 guys can't demand "Nate Clemons" money because most teams don't have it, or can't afford that price. There's going to be compromise
|
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I'd be all for adding one of those corners and moving Springs to FS so we can draft offense rather than trying to replace Taylor (at least next year) thru the draft.. Nobody drafts 3 safeties early (albeit we have extenuating circumstances) in 5 years..
|
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I don't think the Skins will have the cap room to be major players in free agency, but I'm sure they'll find a way to make a couple of moves.

3 guys on the market does not constitute an oversupply as you ar referring to. Also there a a lot more teams out there that have a lot of room to add an elite corner so the demand is by no means diminished. you can get a good corner in the draft - just look at one of the corners you are referring to - Asante Samuel was a 4th round draft pick. Why not take your chances on getting a guy through the draft at a lower price than blowing your cap on a highly coveted free agent corner? |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
DON'T even think about Hall! Definitely a problem guy. Would be funny if he went to dallas & started fighting w/TO for attention.
I sure hope Dallas can't land Samuel or Trufant, those guys are good & they would be a big upgrade over Henry. I hope we keep Springs & let him finish here, maybe draft a cb, depending on who is available. I'm of the opinion that we have to prioritize, but in no particular order: OL,DL,CB, WR, maybe a young qb too. It all depends on the best players that are there when we draft. If the staff sees a great cb prospect in the 1st who has more upside than a d or o linemen, take him. |

I highly doubt we're going to be swimming in extra money to hand out to FA's. We may only be able to sign our draft picks w/ out going over the cap. Do we spend money or what? |

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
Snyder will use the bonus/restructure on some of this, but I agree we won't be up front in FA on the big guys this year. C'est la vie. But if we need money, we'll find the money--there hasn't been a cap to stop us yet.
Canuck, are you out there? What's the prognosis, o Canadian Capologist? |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
In the interests of addressing the fact that we're $20 million over the cap next year, here's a post I wrote about a month ago in another thread:
I'm going to list the ways to get the cap number down. You can debate the merit of making certain moves on this list, but if we don't cut a certain player, you can bet we'd restructure them, which would also save some money. Expected Roster Cuts: Phillip Daniels - $3.0 million saved Mark Brunell - $3.4 million saved Total Savings for Cuts: $6.4 million Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Base Salary, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract: Randy Thomas - $4.3 million saved Clinton Portis - $3.8 million saved Jon Jansen - $3.7 million saved Chris Samuels - $3.4 million saved Cornelius Griffin - $2.8 million saved Santana Moss - $2.4 million saved Casey Rabach - $1.8 million saved Total Salary Restructure Savings: $22.2 million Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Roster Bonuses, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract: Ladell Betts - $1.7 million saved Clinton Portis - $0.4 million saved Andre Carter - $1.9 million saved Antwaan Randle-El - $1.2 million saved Total Bonus Restructure Savings: $5.2 million So I see ways to reduce our 2008 cap number by about $34 million. So do I think armageddon is coming next year? NO. But I wouldn't go making ALL of the moves I listed above, either. We're starting to push a little too much into the future. And if we get rid of Brandon Lloyd, that move will eat up some more space. Bottom line, we won't have to dismantle the team, but we won't have lots of flexibility, either. We'll need to draft very well. I don't think large free agent moves are in our future. |

New England is $10 million under the cap right now. If they really want to keep Samuel, they can pay him more than we can. The Falcons are under the cap and can keep Hall if they really want. Seattle also is $10 million under the cap, so they can keep Trufant if they want. If these guys even hit the market, other teams will outbid us (unless we're stupid). |

Given that we have money tied up in Rogers and Smoot over the next few years, and given that Springs is still a Redskin at this point, I agree that it seems very inappropriate to spend lots of money on a corner. If we do ANYTHING at corner, it would make most sense to draft somebody and bring along as a replacement for Spings. But even that would be inappropriate in my opinion. We have other needs. Our depth along the offensive line, in addition to the age of our linemen, makes that priority one for me. I'd take a WR over a CB, too. And given the fact that it makes all the financial sense in the world to cut Phillip Daniels, we're going to need a DE. Unless Daniels wants to drop his salary, then we could keep him, but even that is a stopgap because he's so old. |

My personal opinion is we draft Calais Campbell - DE - Miami with our first round pick. Than we go to offensive line and draft the best available lineman (prefer guard over tackle but if a preimere tackle is available first go with talent over position- maybe the guard Eric Young of Tennessee?). Than go with a WR/CB next - whoever is the best available at the time. I am not too high on switching Springs to safety because he is already getting injured a lot and isn't Safety a much more high impact position as far as hitting goes? |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
If the way we do things is that much different than all of the other 31 teams in the league one could either say we're innovative or a failure. I'll give it another year under Gibbs and if we have the same results its been a failure. Then blow it up (for the most part) and start building thru the draft.
This philosophy of paying more $ than anyone else in the league hasn't done anything for us. I'm sure our Capologists at Redskins park knows all of the #'s and has a game plan together, that's really not my worry. My worry is winning. I'm all about being aggressive and spending some $. Let's spend some money wisely though. |
