Draft Day Thoughts

Well, the draft day is months away, and if we drop one more game, we can start to really discuss who we pick. Being a total pessimist, I am going to start thinking about the draft. My thoughts are begining with picking a player in a certain position. Likely a replacement for #21 ST, but we have laron, so we have a little room to breathe. Other than a safety, where are we gonna look to improve. With Lloyd, McCardell, and maybe randle el leaving, we could look to improve with wr. Thoughts?

Yeah let's wait until we should officially be discussing next year. Our draft forum will open then. Until then we have 3 games to win.

Well, we need the following in order.

DE (most important)
WR "a big receiver" (second most important)
OL or DB
S

All we need is an offensive line. Build that up. It'll make every player on the team better.

How can you put WR ahead of OL? We have receivers but our QBs do not have much time to get them the ball. We need to build up the offensive line.

Because Jansen and Thomas will be back healthy next year, we have Stephon Heyer who's just gonna get better, Pucillo is decent. I say a 3rd and or 4th round pick for a guard is pretty good. Look at Russ Grimm he was a 3rd round pick, Tre Johnson a 2nd round, etc. You can find value at the C and G position within those rounds.

There are only three areas where we are fine -- QB, RB, and LB.

Apart from that, we can use help just about anywhere.

I'd take a mid round running back. CP looked like he had maybe 1-2 yrs left at best this year. Hope I'm wrong.

Re: Draft Day Thoughts

I figure we could make it one more year with Portis and Betts as long as we have a healthy O-line. Maybe find a Kenny Watson-type guy through undrafted free agency.

I just think Secondary, O-line, wide receiver, and defensive end is a far greater need right now.

BleedBurgundy 12-11-2007 02:39 PM

Re: Draft Day Thoughts

One more year is def. possible, but if there's someone there that the staff feels strongly about, we'd be wise to pick him up. I'm on record as saying first round pick should be d line and second should be right tackle. Wide receiver- eh... we'll see. DB we might, MIGHT be able to swing in free agency through the miracle of our capologist.

That Calais Campbell kid is a beast, 6'8" 280LB runs the 40 in 4.8 seconds. I say draft him right now!! I love what I see and read. This just updated the website with round 2 having us pickup a S. I think we need either a WR or DB with that pick.

Exactly I totally agree let's do this either after we are totally out of the playoff picture.

Re: Draft Day Thoughts

I think we go for either a stud #1 receiver like Chad johnson or Andre Johnson possibly even Bernard Berrian. Then draft Calais Campbell or Vernon Gholsten with our first pick then go for OL help or CB later in draft.Unfortunately I don't think we will make any real big moves in free agency.

EARTHQUAKE2689 12-12-2007 05:07 PM

Re: Draft Day Thoughts

Bernard Berrian is not a stud number 1 guy

skinzaholic73 12-12-2007 05:25 PM

Re: Draft Day Thoughts

Maybe not but he has played pretty well and of the WR's that may be available via free agency..he just struck me as a possibility.

he is a possiblity but lets finish the season first.

Re: Draft Day Thoughts

It's never too early to prepare for the Draft :woot:

Based on how the draft class is shaping up and Free Agents available, here's where I think we should go;

Calais Campbell, if available will probably be the 1st rounder. If not, there appear to be some talented CBs available that could solidify our secondary for our 1st round pick. We will not be able to afford any of the major FA CBs (Samuels, Trufant), although several folks have mentioned Asimounga (spelling) from Oakland and if he comes at a reasonable price he would be a good addition to our secondary.

2nd round - if a highly rated big, physical WR or RB slips, this would be a good spot to take one. If not, FS or OL will probably be the choice. If I'm not mistaken the entire starting OL is over 30, we need to start rebuilding now before these guys breakdown in a couple of years.

OL & DL depth for the rest of the draft and a "project" back-up QB couldn't hurt.

yes we have a CHANCE at the playoffs but we're DEFINETLY goin in the draft next year so why not discuss it?

we go DE-comes in learns under P.Daniels for a year then daniels is gone and the rookie takes over
then BIG WR

Ok how about we WAIT until we are MATHMATICALLY emliminated from the PLAYOFFS before we start talking about an even that is in 2008 spring when we are in fall 2007.
All we need is an offensive line. Build that up. It'll make every player on the team better.
I agree with you completely.

Personally, I think our d-line has done well this year, and I don't think that is our biggest problem. Carter, Griffin, and Golston/Montgomery are fine (also Daniels, but he's old and might not be around much longer). We don't have to have 4 studs on the line to have a good defense. They are blue-collar guys, and they have done their job for the most part. We did pretty well this year on defense before injuries.

I also think we're fine at WR. We've got at least 3 WRs who can play: Moss, El, and McCardell. I don't really care about big WRs. The rules give the advantage to the receiver already. If a guy can run routes, and the QB can get the ball out in time, there's no need to be big -- he'll be in position, and the ball will get there. Over powering/out jumping the DB isn't really necessary if you can beat him with your route running. People act like the only way WRs can catch a pass is if they can over-power the DB. Truth is, those kind of skills are used less than route running and catching are.

Let's draft for O-line and secondary.

Thank you for seeing it my way. Think about it, even if we do get in we wont get a super bowl, if a miracle gets us there, we will play a team that beat us 52-7!!! We need to improve in order to become a superbowl team.

I disagree.
We need guys that can get pressure. Andre Carter has his moments but Daniels, Wilson and any other dlinemen have been non existent on passing downs.

Part of the reason why the skins blown leads is because we go into a cover 2 defense and the offense has all day to throw. If we are going to play safe coverages, we need dlinemen that can get pressure on their own. our guys can't.

Carter has been good with 8 sacks but the other defensive ends combine for 5 total!
Demario williams of the texans has as many sacks as our whole defensive line!

We need to add some young guys to the offensive line who can contribute 2 yearsdown the road. On the Dline, we need guys that can play week one.

the one caveat, It's hard to draft defensive linemen. We have to see who are the best players available.

We shouldn't even be discussing this until a couple months (or one month) before the draft...WAY too much can happen from now til then.

Re: Draft Day Thoughts

Let's see, the offensive line has been beat up, and is getting old. Every projected starter for next year is already over 30, and this is starting to show. Our receivers are small, unproductive and injury prone (for crying out loud, McCardell and Caldwell have become our "Go to" guys). Our defensive line puts less pressure on the QB then does the air at mile high stadium, hence the inability to stop teams at 3rd and long in the 4th quarter which has been perhaps THE major contributor to 4 blown double digit second half leads. Springs is gone next year, and Rodgers is suspect as a number one corner. Marcus Washington is having his second unproductive year in a row and London Fletcher will be 33 years old by the time the upcoming draft rolls around. For the purpose of hanging on to some thread of optimism, we'll ignore the fact that our QB has proven to be more likely to throw a costly red zone INT when games get close then he is to hook up with a receiver in the end zone (Collins, his back up, has 1/24th of Campbel's playing time this year, but 1/3 the number of his TDs!).

That being said, we NEED to draft a C, G, T, DE, DT, WR, OLB, MLB, and a CB, not in any particular order.
We could use QB, S,.
The good news is we have a great TE, and we're solid at RB.

That Guy 12-15-2007 11:54 AM

Re: Draft Day Thoughts

OL (old and only average backups)
DE (daniels is old, carter has been playing MUCH better, backups leave something to be desired)
WR (good depth there, but still could use a #1 or #2)

then S, DB depth, LB depth, blocking TE
