Mario Williams
After all the scrutiny and bad PR the Texans got over picking Williams over Vince Young and Reggie Bush, Mario Williams has been pulling his weight this year and then some.
I hate to hang my hat on one good season, but Mario just might be a franchise defensive end in the making. Seriously, he ate up Denver's backfield last night like a Happy Meal with 3 1/2 sacks. I guess the moral of the story here is, never rush to judgement. Pardon the pun. |
Re: Mario Williams
I was going to start this thread just now lol... are you watching nfl network?
Yes Mario, I'm sorry. I rushed to judgement and questioned why anyone would draft you over Reggie Bush. Now I seem to understand. |
Re: Mario Williams
He's really going off this year. 13 sacks?! Damn
All the talk of him being a bust were very premature and really unfair in hindsight. He had nagging injuries last year that caused him to miss alot of valuable practice time. But this year he's showing what he's really made of. Good for him. |
Re: Mario Williams
I heard someone describe Bush as a "luxury back" which is an interesting term. To me he's the type of player who is much more valuable to ESPN for his highlights than he is to a team in terms of wins. To me, he's basically Donte Hall with the addition that he can play RB as well as WR. Nice to have, but hardly the foundation of a franchise. A solid DE, by contrast is gold, gold I say. Charley Casserly may come out smelling like a rose again in the end.

Re: Mario Williams
I know a lot of the posters on this board like to bash Charley Casserly but if I remember correctly wasn't it Casserly who picked Williams? Here is Peter King on ths subject.....
"Vindication should be Charley Casserly's. It's still early, and we can't judge the top of the 2006 draft after 1 3/4 seasons, but the last major decision Casserly made before being nudged into the CBS NFL Today studio show (where, by the way, he's doing a thorough, cool and insightful job) has turned out to be brilliant." The Texan's demonstrating masterful, bold maneuvering, rather than misguided buffoonery? I'm sure the media wil have the answer |
Re: Mario Williams
And Sage Rosenfeld has been playing fantastic. Plus, the Texans have had lots of injuries to overcome. Nice to see down here in Houston!
|
Re: Mario Williams
Whats the deal with Champ Bailey. I realy cannot rember but I always thought that Champ would go up and hit someone but last niht it seemed that he was scared to hit anyone.
|
Re: Mario Williams
I dunno, I remember one play by Champ with a textbook wrap-up tackle.
He has been injured this year, not sure if that has anything to do with it. |

Sage played very well. I like rooting for him. Marty knew what he was doing when he drafted him I guess. |

Re: Mario Williams
I find it extrememly foolish to rate ANY player as bust or star until after 2-3 seasons. I drafted Mario Williams in fantasy football after I heard a couple of friends talking about his ability to rise to the level of competition. I think he's going to get even better.

Re: Mario Williams
I say hire Charlie again and fire Vinny. The article that someone posted from The Washingtonian magazine mentioned that Charlie and Dan Snyder had a conversation where Charlie said "you fired the wrong guy" meaning him. After Dan fired Norv and running into Charlie he said "you were right".

Re: Mario Williams
I don't know if Charlie would come out of retirement, but they do need to get a general manager in there! We have to start utilizing the draft and free agency market better or we will never win consistently!
|
Re: Mario Williams
Yeah, people owe him an apology. I've never been on the Reggie Bush bandwagon, but I thought VY was their man. I think I was wrong, Mario looks great and Im still not sold that VY will develop to a top tier QB. He scrambles a lot right now, and he may prove me wrong, he's still young. Either way, if the Texans got a pro-bowl caliber player AT ANY POSITION, they did fine in the draft.

I think he would, he's not that old for GM standards. I hope Dan and Charlie consider it. |
Re: Mario Williams
I did think Williams was working on being a bust, but he has really showed up this year. He looked amazingly strong yesterday and struck me as a Reggie White type now. He could be around for a long time.
ps- I always knew Bush and VY were overrated, but thought Williams was too. I was wrong about Williams. |

Unfortunately, I drafted VY in my fantasy league. Wrong move, in hindsight. Someone else is right-on about R. Bush being a WR/RB hybrid, and not worthy of being a legit #1 RB. Mario must be good if he has all those sacks. Wouldn't mind a 13 1/2 sack Pro-Bowler caliber DE for the B&G, would you? C. Casserly won't come back to work for LDS no time, no how, no way. |
Re: Mario Williams
Yeah, someone here called Bush a luxury back. I thought that was an interesting term.
|
Re: Mario Williams
I hope not, but I could see next year this thing coming back around. Vince will have the Madden Curse off of his shoulders, and once the Saints get healthy Reggie will be able to play the role that made him so great last year.
Holding my judgment a little longer. And I would be for a Charlie and Dan reunion. |
Re: Mario Williams
I thought Vince was gonna be a bust when they drafted him....I couldnt believe it. Then in his rookie season he made me feel like a dumbass. Now, he's disproving what he did last year. I guess he's still on the fence.

Re: Mario Williams
Someone who is good at using the search feature should dig up some of my April 06 posts regarding the Texans draft. I know what I felt about the Mario Williams pick, but for fear of being deemed insane, I can't remember if I posted my thoughts on this board.
Honestly, it's like a majority of the media goes out looking for new ways to be wrong. A DE will always be more valuable than a RB of equal skill, and the only reason that I thought the Texans might have made a mistake is because people in the media made Reggie Bush seem like this Gale Sayers type athlete. I don't know where they got that from, because he just hasn't shown me anything at this level yet. |
Re: Mario Williams
I think the moral of the story is that the media - and us as well - shouldn't go calling people busts after 8 games. Braylon Edwards is another guy people were calling a bust prematurely, and look at him now.

You are 100% right. The perception in the media is that once you see a guy take his first snap, you'll have a pretty good idea of how he will pan out. If you went into a year without any information on a guy, you aren't going to be able to draw any accurate conclusions 8 games later. Just not enough info. |
Re: Mario Williams
I wouldnt judge any of them yet,its way too early, just as mario was hurt last yr bush's knee has been bothering him for more games than we knew about,so you cant fault bush for this yr.Mario was sucking up to the 3rd or 4th game this yr,texans fans were on his ass big time,I dont think he had hardly any tackles during preseason if I remember correctly.Being a skins fan first and a texans fan 2nd and a longhorn fan I still wish they would have drafted Vince,to me it was a no brainer,Carr sucked and the only people who couldnt see that were the frickin texans{Casserly}Carr will probably be out of football after this yr.As for Casserly,no frickin way I want him back here,I've seen too many bad moves with the texans. We need a gm,the only way i would want casserly is if thats the only people snyder and gibbs would work with because of past history, but if the job is open to other people I would rather someone else have the job

I think they got their DE in that draft, AND they got their QB by trade. |
Re: Mario Williams
Here is the original 2006 draft thread about this.
http://www.redskinswarpath.com/locker-room/12290-texans-reach-contract-agreement-williams.html I know I said they shouldn't take Bush, but I also said that I didn't know if Williams was going to be the answer either. |
Sage played very well. I like rooting for him. Marty knew what he was doing when he drafted him I guess.
Too bad Marty also drafted Rod Gardner (ahead of Steve Hutchinson and Santana Moss) in the 1st round. Well at least he selected Smoot in the 2nd round.
As for Mario Williams, I'm really happy for the kid after all the abuse he took in the press for the sin of being picked 1st. |

I think they got their DE in that draft, AND they got their QB by trade.
maybe, but leinart or Cutler havent shown me that much, and yes they got a qb by trade, but he cant stay healthy, plus I thought Sage deserved a shot at the job from what i saw of him last yr,but once Schaub was traded for i knew they wouldnt give Sage a chance unless Schaub got hurt Maybe Young wont turn out to be anything special, but by me saying it was a no brainer,I mean it would have made everyone in houston deliriously happy with the pick, and even if he did suck we would be ok with it,but by picking mario that just pissed most of the texans fans off and Mario did nothing to help that till recently, and the texans have yet to defeat Young.Young running it in in OT last yr was like a dagger in the back |
Re: Mario Williams
DEs and WRs can take 3 years to develop. reggie bush wasn't the best RB that year (but he was the best WR - dude's fast, but can't seem to break a tackle to save his life).
williams is a physical freak (4.6 @ 270 lbs), so it's not surprising to see that some experience has helped him use that... plus is contract wasn't THAT bad for a 1st overall pick. meanwhile young hasn't proven much, besides that the titans have a good defense and a good kicker (not that the ten WRs are doing anything to help). I think leinhart is better right now even with less experience. (young would have really helped ticket sales though). |

Re: Mario Williams
Cool That Guy is back.
But I agree, Mario Williams was the smarter pick because lets face it, Reggie Bush is just a glorified kick returner and Vince Young is a slower stronger Michael Vick. I thought it back then and I thought it now Mario Williams is just like Julius Peppers but not as fast and was defintely the better pick and That Guy makes a point: His contract isnt that bad for a 1st overall pick. |
