Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
This guy is what we need at strong safety. When we have him up in the box, opponents struggle mightily to run the football on us. He's excellent at open field tackling, and while he's certainly no 21 back there, he showed me something in coverage today.
Huge game for a hard working 6th round special teamer who I believe just played his way into a full time NFL job. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
I like how Williams is putting Doughty in sports where he can maximize his strengths. It's a good way to keep his confidence level up after he was given the unbearable burden of "replacing" Sean Taylor.

Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
did anyone else notice when doughty tackled shockey shockey was pointing to his eyes. I found it curious and later noticed the 21 eye black labels he was wearing. I wonder what he was saying to reed...

Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
LaRon is actually playing FS and Doughty filling in as SS. Other than that taunting penalty (which I can excuse a rookie hard hitter for) Landry has played exceptionally. Especially in the absence of #21. As for Shockey- Broken ankle. Talk shit about that #80. I think Shockey said something about ST when pointing to his eyes. What a total herb. Gmen drop next 2 games and miss playoffs...

Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
White Devil is definitely playing some good football! Good to see. Nice to see we can build some depth.
Is PP hurt, or did Reed get on ahead of him. |

I STRONGLY doubt that Shockey said anything disrespectful about ST given that he also went to the U and played on the same squad as him. Shockey may have his faults but he would never be disloyal to the memory of a Miami player. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
He certainly has improved his play and obviously is much more adept at the SS position as opposed to FS. He almost made a couple of pass interference penalties, however, including one against Steve Smith where he failed to get his head around on an underthrown ball. He did the same thing in Dallas when covering Crayton and gave up a 50 yard penalty. The one last night would have given the Giants first and goal on a pass that should have at least been deflected.
I appreciate his gutsy effort, and he's the best option right now, but he and Leigh Torrence are still a liability in coverage. P.S. I know we're all Skins fans and all, but you can't cheer Shockey breaking his leg and say he should "talk shit about that" and then say that you can "forgive Landry for his taunting." If you don't like one you should be equally disgusted with the other. |

I would bet that he said something to the effect of, "you're no Sean Taylor," which is very true. Shockey talks, that's his game, I don't care for it, but I don't want to see the guy break a fibula and require surgery. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Yeah Doughty has very nice insticts and it's been just great to see him step up and prove he belongs in such a hard situation. Also Stephon Heyer is just awesome. An undrafted lineman who plays like a second or third round draft pick is just so sweet. While I'm at it Montgomery is turning into a beast too. We really have had some guys step up. Very good news for us going forward.

Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Very unfortunate about Shockey. Say what you will, he is the emotional leader of the offense and a good TE to boot. The Giants will definitely miss him down the stretch as it gives the inconsistent Manning one less target to throw to.
As far as Shockey taunting Reed, I think it was more out of reverence and respect for Sean Taylor than it was actually putting down Doughtey. I thought it was very classy, if you could say such a thing about Shockey, to have #21 under his eyes. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
I must have watched a different game. I saw a number of missed tackles and poor wrapups, especially in run support, from Doughty. He's got a long way to go...
Speaking of which, why is it that our secondary is capable of playing great coverage on one play and then absolultely blowing it the next? Scary. Finally, there is probably nothing I hate more about today's NFL players than when they celebrate after every play - even bad ones! What I mean is that there were several plays where NYG players were poorly covered but *dropped* the ball - and OUR PLAYERS high-fived and chest butted like they did something GOOD! REDICULOUS! |

dont make shit up. Do you honestly think he would be trash talking Sean while wearing tribute eye black to the guy? Its nice to see guys from other teams care for individuals, especially a division rival. |

Take your own advice. Luxorreb didn't say he was "trash talking Sean". |

Reed Is A Good Player And He Gives It His All But It Will Be So Hard To Replace Sean At That Poss.he Is Trying So Hard Out There.gotta Give Him Credit.a Good Tackler Yes A Good Hitter He Is Not.go All The Way Redskins!

Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Anyway, back to Doughty.
I was impressed. He has some work to do, but if he can be a guy Landry can trust (just as Landry was becoming for ST), it's only going to help everyone on D in pass sets. |

The chest thumping and stuff, I think every team does that when someone drops a ball. Lame? Yes, but we're not alone at least. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Speaking of Landry though, is he becoming Carlos Rogers Jr. with dropping INTs?
|
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Outside of his exceptional play he is a great guy with a huge heart. I was lucky enough to meet him at training camp as I was standing on the far side of the field after practice. He strolled all the way down to the far side where I was at with some young kids and parents came over and spent almost 10 minutes talking to me. Both him and ARE were down there and it was a great experience.
I got Reed to sign my cap in which I happen to have been wearing last night, and I wore it proud. I think this guy will turn out to be a solid safety and I am proud to have met him. I'm keeping this hat on for the next two games! |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
I completely forgot about Doughty's backstory:
http://www.redskinswarpath.com/locker-room/16540-really-good-sad-humbling-article.html Disregarding his on-field play, it's nice to see a stand-up guy making it big. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Doughty might end up being a nice find. He's played a lot better so far than I expected him to.
|
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Don't look now guys, but guess who in the Skins has 10.5 sacks? Only 3 back from the lead.

Well, I also strongly doubt that Shockey was saying something disrespectful about ST. In fact, I doubt anyone believes he was saying something bad about him. What seems just as clear, though, is that he was in fact jawing with Doughty about ST. As others have suggested, he was most likely telling Reed that he's no ST, which is, to put it simply, uncool. We all know that Shockey likes getting into it with opponents when he's on the field, and we also know that he had tremendous respect for Sean and has admirably shown respect for Sean with his presence at the funeral and his ST--21 painted on his face. With this combination, he got up off the turf last night, saw Reed, and couldn't keep his mouth shut about ST. There was no doubt they were having an exchange, and that it clearly wasn't the back-slapping type of exchange, and as someone has pointed out, Shockey was pointing at his face while having that exchange. So, no, Shockey wasn't saying anything bad about ST, but there seems to be little doubt that he was talking ABOUT ST to Doughty, and wasn't saying nice things to Doughty. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
RD has played pretty decent football. No one will mistake him for ST or LL but he has played better and tougher than any other guys we've had a Safety the last couple fo years. And I don't think we've had bad play at the position outside of last season.
|
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Reed has made some good plays and some bad plays, but you guys all have to agree that he is so much better than Archeletta!!!! I think Reed will only improve next year which gets me back to my thoughts that the Skins need to really address our O-line and D-line in the draft next year and not worry about replacing Taylor. Landry and Doughty are good enough with a better pass rush next year.
|
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Doughty has definitely surpassed my expectations of him, but I still do not think he is a starting caliber safety in this leauge. Doughty missed quite a few tackles the last couple of games, and he doesn't look extremely fluid in coverage. I believe he was responsible for Boss on that Giants TD, not only did he blow the coverage he missed the tackle on him. I am definitely not sold on Doughty being our future at the SS position, but here is to hoping he proves me wrong because I am definitely rooting for the guy, but I think it is a long shot to think that he is going to be our future at SS.
Speaking of Landry though, is he becoming Carlos Rogers Jr. with dropping INTs?
Speaking of, Doughty had 2 in his hands last night. I won't start w/the Rogers comparisons yet, rather let's take a positive spin on it; these guys are young & are both trying to temper their energy & play w/in themselves. They are probably dropping passes due to their over excitedness (not a word I guess, but you get the point). Eventually, we'll see them get some picks. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
I guess RD played well, but it's hard to say given the terrible winds last night. Everyone wants to say we're set at the safety position, but it's only one game. Let's just wait a little while longer.
I can't credit our defense too much. Other than the fumble by AC, the Giants mostly beat themselves with the dropped passes and the poor weather. Our offense played well, on the other hand. Speaking of tacklers, since LL came to the Redskins I think he's done a great job at tackling. So many guys today throw themselves at opponents and tuck their arms into their body. LL doesn't do that much, and he wraps up really well, IMO. I think his tackling technique is superb. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
I'm glad that Reed was able to come in and take over the Strong Safety spot, so that Landry can roam centerfield like #21 used to do. Another quality game last night from Reed, led the team with 11 total tackles (7 solo, 4 assist) and 1 pass deflect.

A voice of reason among so many admirers. Thanks RM, you are right about Doughty missing tackles, and not looking fluid. I might add that Doughty is not very fast, and in fact looks to be in slow motion while in coverage. I pray we find a gem of a Safety in next years draft, somewhere after we draft a DE/DL, and a couple of OL-men. |

Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
A response and a question...
My response is, Reed Doughty is a 2nd year player from a Division 1-AA Northern Colorado. He DEFINITELY deserves credit for his play considering everything (ST, his personal life, and adjustment to this game speed). At his pace from the passed 6 games, he'd definitely have a 100 tackle season over 16 games. This is actually not such a great thing. Safeties with 100-120 tackles in a season means something is missing from your interior d-line or linebackers... which lead to my question... What happened to Rocky McIntosh??? First 8 games - 67 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 FF Last 6 games - 19 tackles, 0 sacks, 1 FF (Yes, he didn't play most of the game last night but I had noticed his lack of production before that) |

From what I saw, Reed Doughty for the most part was in position on coverage, supported the run well and looked solid. He did his job and considering where the Redskin secondary is right now, that's pretty good. If I was in the Redskin organization, I wouldn't panic and pick a safety high in the draft, I might go for help later in the draft. The defensive line and offensive line need more help. The guy that scares me is LeeTorrence. He plays a soft corner, playing way back off the receiver. He is tentative in his coverage and seems afraid to jump a route when he is in position. A serious liability in coverage and obviously the G-Women were aware of it because they were going after him constantly. Luckily the wind save his butt. |
Re: Reed Doughty: Excellent Tackler
Leigh Torrence vs Ade Jimoh in a skills challenge would be a toss-up. He is TD waiting to happen out there... SCARY.
