RELAAAAAXXXXXXXXXX, Guys!!!
I can't believe the stuff I am seeing here on a REDSKIN fan site!!
"Extremely disappointed" "Hasselbeck should be the starter" "Can't take this" many, many, many more. What's up with you guys??!!?? C'mon, have a little FAITH!!! And try to realize, this is the FIRST PRESEASON GAME OF 5... Jeez. If this were the 4th of 5, then I could see it. Don't panic, they've just STARTED practicing, have a long way to go, a lot more rust to get off, and a LOT more plays to add. They never even had an entire first string in (at least the guys like Taylor that will be first string when the season opens.) Relax, be patient, .....................................ENJOY!!!!!!!!!! |
I agree, man, but c'mon! we've been waiting for this day for a long time, so over-reactions are to be expected!
But the loss of Jansen is a major deal. |
Yeah, Jansen really hurt. But at least they have time to get his replacement ready. Any with Bugel, he WILL be ready LOL.
|
we all agree that its early. and are moving ahead now. but that doesnt take away from the fact that during the game we were frusterated. As well we should be. expecially people fighting for a starting job. they cant go out there and play like crap. gibbs isnt going to start a guy and say 'its ok you sucked in preseason, go ahead and start'
|
fumbling snaps, way overthrown passes, really should be beyond all this.
|
they cant go out there and play like crap. gibbs isnt going to start a guy and say 'its ok you sucked in preseason, go ahead and start'
No, but he is not going to panic after one game. Way too early. He will stick with his QB plan through the first 4 games. Things will look a LOT different by then. And if after 4 games, both guys still are flat, Hasselbeck is still there. As far as being frustrated, I really think some of you expected way too much. I saw a lot of rough play, but expected it - there ALWAYS is this early. I also saw some encouraging play. And I enjoyed the hell out of watching the game. And as far as the fumbled snaps, etc., if you have ever seen a first preseason game, you have seen that... it gets better. Were you totally exhuberant after Spurrier's preseason start 2 years ago?? Look what happened. Means nothing. |
Guys remember that camp just started.....Gibbs has always been known to be "vanilla" in the preseason.
|
I tend to be one of the bigger pessimists on this site, but I think everyone is overreacting to tonight's game. First of all, it is just the first preseason game. Second of all, our defense turned the ball over three times, scored a touchdown, allowed only 1 touchdown, got pressure on the QBs, and was overall an improvement over last season. Third, we won the game. Fourth, its only the first preseason game. Fifth, its only the first preason game.
Re: Jansen Jansen being out sucks. Kenyatta Jones will probably take his place. Our starting O-line should still be decent with Samuels, Dockery, Friedman, Thomas and Jones. |
im not panicing. im not worried at all. i understand we just started practicing. i was disappointed during the game just because of all the hype that went into it. but i understand the wernt many implications from this game.
its cool we won. and are taylor jerseys available yet? |
Hey, man - when you find them, send one to ALABAMA!!!! He was absolutely awesome!!!
|
i could get his canes jersey.
actually. thats a great idea. im going to do that this week. they dotn have names on teh back of the jerseys. portis and taylor were both 26 and wore teh same jersey. im definitly buying a number 26 UM jersey |
Considering that Brunell, Ramsey and Hasselbeck had same amount of time to learn Gibbs' offense....I believe Hasselbeck showed better knowledge of how Redskins' offense should be run. I'm not saying Hasselbeck should be the starter, but if regular season started next week....I would have to go with Hasselbeck. Also, it's a shame about Jansen. He worked his tail off to showcase his talent this year. I wish him a speedy recovery.
|
The O has a long way to go! Gibbs has known this from the very start back in Feb. Right know it is 11 guys going in that many ways. Like a dance they need to move together. Learn what Gibbs is trying to do. Luck has it thay have four more games and five weks to get it done!
|
I think the REAL reason everyone was a little frustrated with the game tonight is simple... we DID suck on offense BIG TIME for the first 3 quarters... and the Broncos DIDN'T... although both teams have been in camp the same amount of time.
I think at one point in the 3rd quarter we had 68 total yards compared 228 by Denver... or something like that... then Hasselbeck and the 3rd stringers stepped in and everything changed. The fact that the 1st AND 2nd string were BAD tonight IS a LITTLE disconcerting. I am pretty sure that while Brunell and Ramsey were in for almost 3 quarters combined, we only had like 4 or 5 FIRST DOWNS. We all know it was just the first preseason game and we've only been in camp for a week or so... I just think people were disappointed because they had no offensive plays to cheer for with the first 2 units in... no one is jumping ship... but of course anyone who loves their team gets frustrated when they don't even get first downs to cheer for, much less TDs. Not the end of the world... just frustrating to watch. With all that said... everyone SHOULD DEFINITELY be freaking out about Jansen being gone. I don't know if I am the only person to point this out on this site... but we now have a left-handed starting QB (for all intensive puposes) and right tackle blocks his BLIND SIDE!! To say losing him won't be THAT big of a deal and saying Bugel with throw Kenyatta Jones or whoever else in there and get them ready is the ULTIMATE optimist... and I hope their faith is on point. |
HTTR. I hear what you're saying about us losing Brunell's blindside protection with Jansen going down.
But here's what I'm wondering. Is that whole notion of blindside protection overrated? I mean everybody remembers perennial Pro-Bowler Tony Boselli during Brunell's best years in Jacksonville playing left tackle, but how many people remember that Leon Searcy (who I don't think ever made the Pro Bowl) protected Brunell's blindside at right tackle. |
I'm not panicking myself - though the loss of Jon Jansen is a very sad development. We still have a chance to make the playoffs and I am hopeful we can do that, one way or another.
The blindside protection is not an issue of extreme importance perhaps, but it is a factor. The bigger factor is that our offensive line is very likely going to be less efficient. We will run and pass block less well. Clinton Portis' impact will be diminished. We are going to need a quarterback to be mobile more so than before Jansen's injury. And I am concerned that Brunell may not be able to run around as much as he may be forced to. That is part of the reason why I think Tim Hasselbeck may be our best bet for this season. Would Joe Gibbs have gone to Jacksonville to sign Mark Brunell if he knew that Jansen would be gone this year with no time to replace him through the draft, trades, or free agency? Is Brunell built at this point to be running around all the time, or did Gibbs envision a comfortable situation with Jansen taking away the left defensive end? It's not panicking to say that Hasselbeck may be our best bet. As I said, I think he has excellent skills and provides an intangible spark and fire that seems to energize our team. |
tim played 3rd stringers, its not like he'd do that well against a true 1st string D ;) I'd say claiming him as the starter is quite a stretch from part of one game against a super crappy bunch of defensive players. Tim is a REALLY good 3rd string QB, but last year showed that he's a drop off from what ramsey can offer, and i don't think that's changed much.
|
With Jansen out Im gonna see Kearse in my nightmares tonight
|
Another thing that concerned me while watching the game was our run defense. Seemed like Quentin Griffin was running all over us. Also, I don't think pass-rush hasn't improved any from last year. I hope our D-line performs better as time goes on.
|
I thought our D line did better but we bit on all those rollouts and they got wide open passed off to the flat. We need to stay home and play. Granted I didnt even see staples of our D such as LaVar plating
|
The only thing we should be worried about is the loss of Jansen. That is just devastating as every team in the East has a very good left defensive end. Must find a replacement for him this week and get them into camp!!!
Yes the offense sucked, but remember....don't expect miracles as Gibbs started 0-5 in his first season!!! It will come, probably quicker than the first go around. I was particularly impressed by the discipline of the team. A few penalties here and there but certainly more disciplined than the last 5 years! |

Relax, be patient, .....................................ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't agree more. The thing about the preseason is you can't get too high or too low. There's a reason why these games DON'T COUNT. Before we hit the panic button let's remember some key things: The team has been in camp for a little over a week, to expect them to come out firing on all cylinders is ridiculous and very unrealistic. Add in the fact this is a completely new staff, new system and a bunch of new players, and you have to expect a period of adjustment. A week of practice isn't going to cut it. It might be 4 or 5 games into the season before we really start to see them playing the way they are capable, maybe more. So let's not panic after one meaningless preseason game. The offensive and defensive schemes right now are bare bones, basic stuff. Yes they looked sloppy, but that's honestly what I expected. If you expected anything else your expectations are way too high. |
Let's look at this preseason game as a drawing board. We know Coach Gibbs takes these games seriously. Not just because it showcases new talent, but because it allows us to see how fast or slow the QB's comprehend his gameplan. If Ramsey wants the starting position, he will have to get rid of the ball quicker and throw the ball away if there are no open receivers. His performance was a mirror of some of his games last. Brunell looked lethargic and didn't have the zip on the ball that I've seen in Jacksonville. Hasselbeck was of course the most spirited and accurate in his passing. Overall, there wasn't any fire or energy geared up by Ramsey or Brunell like they want the starting position.
My predictions of the first cuts, based on this game are: Jimoh- CB Brewer-Punt Return Pierce-LB Mike Sellers-RB Cartwright-RB ( I know I like him too, but he fumbled last year against Carolina). Team prospects: Sean Taylor*, Gari Scott, Sultan McCollough, Ralph Brown, John Simon |
Sunra, If they do make some cuts this week, then I could not disagree, except for Sellers. I missed a bit of the game because I was running a draft, but I thought Sellers was dinged. Did he really get enough exposure for an evaluation?
Thanks to a couple of you for adding the voice of reason to all the hysteria. Excellent post, Matty - it really put it in perspective. |
Ade Jimoh is gone, IMO, but the rest of the guys that were mentioned (Pierce, Sellers, Cartwright) will definitely improve and not be cut right now. I was watching Comcast's pregame show and one of Gibb's former skins was talking about how he put up a donut his first preseason game and thought for sure he was gonna be cut, but they just ragged on him in practice and he eventually got better and performed.
|
Why did the Broncos look more fluid on offense than the Skins? Perhaps because they've been running that system for 10 YEARS in Denver? Meanwhile, we've got a new qb and a new rb learning a new system along with the rest of the offense. Give Gibbs some slack.
And Shane please, I beg of you, please be joking about all this TH as a starter talk. Be joking or be related to the guy. Because I've seen him as a starter before and honestly I was not impressed. |
hey I dont know if anyone else watched the game but the Broncos (who i keep hearing are superbowl contenders) had just as much trouble as the skins. both teams looked rusty which is okay for the first preseason game.
I watched the game and saw a lot of positives many stated earlier with pressures and turnovers but when it came down to it the team bended but did not break which i was most impressed with. |
rock and pierce won't be cut after 1 game... no way.
|
I dont know if anyone taped the game or not, but if you did go back and rewatch it. I taped it and I rewatched most of the first half when Brunell/Ramsey played. We really didnt play that bad at all. When all the starters were out of the game it was 3-3. We had some trouble at QB, but thats to be expected. I just dont understand how we can take a single thing from this game. The only things I am taking from this game is that the QB battle is wide open to Ramsey, Hasslebeck and Brunell, Sean Taylor is a Maniac, and Jon Jansen is a huge loss. Outside of that, who really cares. Gibbs said he was approaching this as a scrimmage for cryin out loud. If we play like hell week one vs the Bucs , then I'll start to worry. Until then , I have just as much confidence in tihs team as I did before the game.

The thing your forgeting is that the Broncos are running the same system they have run for years. All of our guys are trying to learn a nes system to them. Things will get a lot crisper as we go, but don't be surprised if we struggle some throughout preseason. Like the man said Reeeeeeeeeeeeelax. |
Also remember that all the practices are now closed to the public. Which means that Gibbs has not installed all of he offensive plays yet.
joeCrisp: if you watched the game lastnight, how many plays looked similar to what they worked on during practice? I am willing to bet alot. Trust me Gibbs was not going to show everything lastnight... |
Trust me Gibbs was not going to show everything lastnight...
Good point. And a great deal of it will not show up until WEEK 1. There will be one play thrown in here and there during the preseason from his hidden arsenal to test them out. Then those plays and variations will show up frequently in the regular season. And the counter trey stuff they were running needs a LOT more practice. They will continue to improve their blocking execution. It has to get automatic for them. For some of those OL players, that high level of mobility, quickness, and deceptiveness that is required is going to take a while. When that comes together, it will greatly loosen up the passing game. Hopefully, by then, Brunell and Ramsey will have shaken off the rust. Yeah - I'm an optomist - AND a believer in Gibbs!!! |
Gibbs keeps it pretty vanilla in the preseason, so I'm not worried. I was a little dissapointed with the play of Brunell and Ramsey, but it's just the first real game, they still have some off season rust. I think Brunell will win the job though. Gibbs likes veterans.
|
Rick (Doc) Walker said,
The main thing is Ram had to look like there was no residual foot problem.
Taylor was to look like a 1st rounder. Brunnell was to look like he was not too old, and still mobile. And that He (Doc) was not worried. All that in the last 10 minutes of the 4:30-5:00 p.m. hour on 980. Doc should know! |
After only 9 day's to work I think we did OK!! Go get'em Joe!! :coach:
|
One thing I can certainly distinguish from last season's debacle is penalties. It was refreshing to see the other team penalized from our goal back to the 30 yard line. That's the difference between Greg Williams and that other guy we had at Defensive Coordinator.
