Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

Washington Redskins

Sounds like alot going on at Redskin park.

Joe and Dan need to talk about Joes future, hopefully get it ironed out in the next week or sooner.

The QB situation they really want Todd back, he would not commit as to who would be the starter in 2008.

Check it out.

Thoughts?

He also never stated that he was coming back for sure. It almost sounded like he maybe leaning towards retirement, but thats just me.

I got that impression too, and he even got a bit agitated when the press kept pressing the issue.

And I got a bit annoyed when Gibbs skirted the question of the starting quarterback for next season, and proceeded to fellate Todd Collins for 90 seconds...

When he said he hoped to start talking with Dan tonight, I really could get no real feel either way. Very hard to read him on this one.

The reporters tried there best to get him to say he was going to live up to the 5 year deal and they just came up short ( Not a NO but not a YES). He stated countless times that was something him and Dan would have to work through, the process at the end of the season?

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

It's not surprising that he said "we'll review everything, etc." He always says that. But I'm a bit suprised that he didn't add his usual "I fully expect to fulfill my contract through its term."

I think he'll stay though. If he leaves it would be because all the real life tragedies that have befallen him and this team over the past year have reminded him that there are far more important things for him at this stage in his life than coaching a football team.

What if he decides to step down as Head Coach, but continues being the Team President? Do you think thats a possibility?

I'm really not concerned.

I've got no doubt he's coming back as Team President and fairly confident he'll return as head coach.

I'm supposed to talk with JD sometime this week I think-'cause that's how I roll-should I hear anything, I'll let you know. And maybe some other people here as well.

Gibbs mentions 'getting something hashed out'.

Sounds like a contract extension to me, but maybe I'm just hearing what I want to hear.

I wish I could be a fly on the wall during their meeting, you know Danny will beg him to comeback at any cost. We are an off season away from the SB, he has to comeback.

I really hope and have thought the same, that he would come back and coach at least one more year.

However, the presser left me not as certain as I was a couple of days ago. He did say he made a trip home to a family event. I'm sure his mind is made up one way or the other. Hopefully we won't have to wait long to get the news.

Did you catch the presser?

I hope he comes back as well. He just left me a little puzzled after that press conference. Maybe he just wants to make sure that he gets that extension before he announces that he's staying.

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

I want Gibbs to come back. I don't think the Redskins would be the same without Gibbs. He is like a father figure to all the players including us (fans). Even when the Redskins had tough times or made mistakes, he would never yell like other coaches do. I would miss that if he left. He is a nice guy, and I want him to stay.

Here's JLa's take on the press conference......
People inside the organization were definitely thrown off by Gibbs's noncommittal nature, but no one has seen indication that he will actually leave.
Everyone I spoke to thinks this is a bit of a negotiationing process here, and Joe doesn't want to say much he gets something worked out with Snyder on an extension - assuming they do get it worked out.
Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

$7 million a year for years 6 and 7 doesn't sound bad to me. It appears that the sticking point may be what happens with his staff years 6 and 7.

I keep telling myself I'd be ok if he left, but really I don't want him to leave yet.

Not worried about the Campbell comments. Campbell has nowhere to go, Collins on the other hand might. I think he's just trying to show Collins some love to keep him around...as a backup.

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

Joe always plays his cards close to the vest. I just can't see him stepping down unless there's some major personal issue going on with him. I don't think he'll run the risk of alienating a lot of fans who will be extremely upset with him for not fulfilling his 5 year commitment.

I read on washingtonpost.com this morning that Gibbs will take a few weeks and talk with his family before fully commiting verbally

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

When Joe was stepping down back in the early 90's how did he go about doing it?

I think he is coming back for at least one more year but then again we really don't know if he has the desire to continue coaching.

Lady Brave 01-07-2008 08:35 PM

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

Why can't he just say, "I intend to fulfill my current contract. Beyond that, we'll see."

It's not that hard. C'mon Coach. You're killing me.

skinsguy 01-07-2008 08:51 PM

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

Before, Gibbs undoubtedly stressed that he would be fullfilling his 5 year contract. I'm sure after the type of season the Redskins have had (up and down season, injuries, death of ST,) it has made Joe Gibbs step back and re-evaluate things a bit. I have a feeling Dan has a 2 year extension for him and is probably wanting Gibbs to sign it as soon as possible. Gibbs might be considering the possiblity of having up to three more hard seasons like the one the 'Skins just had. Not sure how much Gibbs has left in the tank for that.

But, I agree with Smootsmack. I'm not ready for Gibbs to leave just yet.

vague things, no confirmations, no useful information.

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

I just find it very interesting that we heard Riggins on the radio saying that Gibbs was offered a two year extension. This was mentioned like two weeks ago, and we haven't heard a single thing else about it. Now given Gibbs' noncommittal talk today, this tells me he's at least THINKING about retiring.

Who knows what he ends up deciding, but there's definitely a trend going on pointing to him being very on the fence at the moment.

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

He's pretty old, been on an incredibly stressful emotional rollercoaster ride and he's pretty old. Give the man some time to relax and see his family. Once he feels he's ready to make a decision, one I think will be to stay, he'll announce it in a proper and respectful manner as is Joe Gibbs' style.

I don't know that an extension was actually offered at that time, the subject of discussing an extension after season's end was broached. As is my understanding.

I just hope it's not a case of him stepping aside to elevate Williams before anyone else snatches him up to be their HC. Like I said though, I think he returns.

What's up with the rumor that Williams might be talking to Miami?

Did coach Joe really say this:

But Gibbs said he believes these Redskins are on the right path, with the right quarterback and the right personnel. If ever there were a time to walk away, this might be it.

This is according Adam Shefter.

I was on the phone during the time Adam Shefter was talking about Joe Gibbs, but I didn't get to hear what he said. Hopefully Joe returns for at least his final season, and we win the Super Bowl. That should be how it all ends.

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

Yea I also heard the 2 year extension talk on Riggo radio and fan nation had it rumored. Then soon after that I heard it was just that a rumor. But no tellin?

I would think Dan would love to sign Joe for a 2 year extension. But I would think at this point 3 more years might be more than Joe is willing to take on just my guess, but that would have Joe 70 years old.

I would be more than happy to take whatever time Joe is willing to give the team. But with the team pointing in the right direction I REALLY HOPE he will at least come back next season minimum.

Maybe he didn't want to commit to a starting QB, because it won't be his call next year....Just a thought.

Re: Who caught the Joe Gibbs presser today at 5pm?

I saw the press conference and came away thinking:

1) Gibbs will very likely be back

2) Todd Collins will get the benefit of the doubt in any quarterback competition next year. If TC was already under contract, then JG would be less worried about upsetting the apple cart and would have been more commital on giving TC the starting role.

As much as I like what TC has done and see the value of knowing the offense as he does, everytime he throws an out, it seems to float and take forever to reach the target. A savvy CB will jump the route and have an easy defensive TD.

Personally, I would stick with JC and try to keep TC as the backup. However, I really don't think that Gibbs feels the same way.

All indications are Tony Sparano gets that job as soon as the Cowboys' season is over. Unless the Dolphins can pry Crennel away from Cleveland.

GW to Baltimore is possible.

I hadn't heard anything about GW name come up for the coaching gig with the Ravens.

From what I had at least heard they where looking at bringing back the Defensive Coordinator they just fired Rex Ryan or Marty are possibly front runners.

Well since Boswell is a Gibbsologist and all I guess that sums it up. All he needs to do is sign the contract extension Boswell thinks he will and we are off and running. lol

Hope it happens this week!
