Wow, I honestly didn't see that coming.

Re: HOLY SHIT, Joe resigns
My heart LITERALLY just sank !

Re: HOLY SHIT, Joe resigns
Say it ain't so!!!
ESPN isn't likely to report such a thing inaccurately. |

Re: HOLY SHIT, Joe resigns
This was about the last thing I expected - I was certain he was going to be back.
What a blow to this organization. |

ESPN - Gibbs to resign as coach of Washington Redskins - NFL
By the way he was talking yesterday this doesn't shock me at all. He never said he was coming back and you could just see it. He's 67 and this is a very demanding job. He wants to be with his family and I don't blame him one bit. Thanks Joe for getting the team back to respectability. |
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
Personally, I'm happy about it. I want a younger ambitious coach. Gibbs helped stabilize the franchise a bit, but didn't build too much for the future. We can finally get back to normal discussion here and have people say their feelings.

Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
Shoot...sorry, didn't see the other post.
|
Re: HOLY SHIT, Joe resigns
seriously, and this might be dumb, but did he resign or re-sign?
Stupid English. |
Re: HOLY SHIT, Joe resigns
Please don't let us devolve into the pre-Joe days. please please please.
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I just hope he stays around in some capacity.
Honestly, I'm pretty upset about this news. |

reposted from the other thread.
Change can be good, but it isn't seamless. Very rarely does a brand new coach come into an organization and have them ultra-competitive the same season. 2008 could be a long, long season. |
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I am REAL disappointed about this!!! just when you thought it could not get worse. I wonder if Greg takes the helm?
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
Nothing on Redskins.com as of yet, nor on JLC's blog.
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I imagine that GW will take the helm. The question then becomes: what goes on in the FO? Will Saunders stay as OC? If Saunders goes, bye bye Collins.
Ahhhhhhhh. |
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I am very surprised. I really thought he'd be back for his final year.
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I would think Williams would get the nod and Al Saunders sticks around. My question is what about Bugel and the rest of the gang?????
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
Who will replace him? Bill Cowher? Cam Cameron?
Gibbs will remain the best Redskin I ever knew and he will always remain the face of the team. |
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
He'd been talking for a while that he would fulfill his contract, and be here 5 years. This really surprises me, as he's got this team to a point where the development is going in the right direction. He'll surely be missed...
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
Pray that Snyder has learned something in these last four years, cause if he goes back to the "quick fix" days - we are going back to the cellar.
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I'm bummed, I thought he would at least finish out the 5 years and I was really hoping for more. I just hope we can build on the continuity we've got going and not tear things apart too much as far as the coaches go. I'm guessing this means some of his right hand guys like Bugel will be leaving too.
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
Greg? Cowher??? Pete Carroll???
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
can't see the skins going outside the organization for a new coach.on the same hand,i can't say that williams ,sanders,or any other current coach on the staff are great head coach material either.
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
Williams is the only answer at this point while retaining Saunders.
Think of it...who else is strong enough to come in and flush the coaching staff and start again...especially from a personel standpoint.... Cowher? Other than him....no one that is available could pull that off. Right now, what this team needs is stability and a steady hand...that screams Coach Williams. |
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
It was time for Joe to step down, but I was hoping that he would stay on as President though. I'm said for that because the man knows football even though coaching is over his head. Like Parcells stated earlier this (coaching) is a young man's game. I just hope that we keep Williams or Saunders as HC. I do not want some college coach to come in and changed things in this organization. We need some continuity. I'm hearing that Synder might be tempted to contact Pete Carroll or some high profile name. This would be a huge mistake. ONCE AGAIN, YOU CAN NOT BLAME HIM, HE CAN NOT COACH FOREVER!!
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I just hope this doesn't set Jason Campbell back. A new head coach likely means a new OC, unless we hire Gregg Williams and he keeps Saunders.
And I thought this would be another slow work day... |

That's what I'm worried about - continuity. The only thing that's been continuous over the last 15 years has been mediocrity. The revolving door pattern of coaches and players in this organization has got to be the central problem. That or we've got the worst luck of anyone. |
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
tough emotional year, a lot to handle in one season. thanks for everything joe
|
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I would imagine Bugel and Breaux will be gone. I really don't see GW or AS staying if the other is made HC. I could be wrong. The transition may be seamless with GW moving up and Blache becoming an actual DC. It's the FO I worry about. Even though he was still around and made some bad calls, Joe kept Vinny C in line and in his place.
I don't begrudge Joe leaving, I really think he has left the team in a better place. Hopefully, the lessons he taught about loyalty, high-character players will remain. |
Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President
I agree skinsnut, I think it will be Williams. Cowher, while a quality candidate would be the quick fix that Dan would be rumored to go for. Even Pete "I don't want to coach in the NFL" Carroll's name has been thrown out there. Promote Gregg and keep things as stable as they can be. Make Blache the DC and Saunders keeps his spot.

According to that, Gibbs will stay on as a "special adviser" to Snyder. Whatever that means. There will also be a news conference at 3:00PM. |
