Chris Canty?
What would you think of the Skins sticking it to Dallas and signing their free agent to be Chris Canty this offseason? He is an alumni from University of Virginia and would fullfill a good role on defense for us.

Re: Chris Canty?
Being a Virginia fan, i like Canty but he might be too expensive.

Re: Chris Canty?
I thought we should have drafted him...he was injured and ended up slipping to the second or third round I think...I can't remember. So, yeah, I would want him if we could afford it.

Re: Chris Canty?
I think canty would be a good pickup but at a fair deal. I don't want to overpay another free agent! Andre Carter earned his pay this year. Him and canty would be a good pair together.

Dallas drafted him in the first round. He is also a restricted free agent. I also think there is no way Dallas lets him get away. |

He was drafted in the 4th round, pick number 132. And I would have to take a pass on the guy in three years he has 3.5 sacks and something like 4 tipped passes. He had a lot of tackles this year, but I sure Phillip Daniels had the same production. Also this guy is a runstopper and is apparently best suited for the left side of a 3-4 defense. I dont think there is anything appealing about the guy. |

Re: Chris Canty?
We dont need to make any signings until we are out of salary cap hell. Personally, I think Canty would be good but we dont need to overpay anyone.

I think your thinking of that bust from LSU marcus spears. Please take him. |

we arent in salary cap hell |

Why are you down on Spears? He seems like a solid player. |
Re: Chris Canty?
Canty is going to be offered the high tender for a restricted free agent, which should net him just over 2 mil a year.
Since he will be getting that high tender, any other team that signs him away from the Cowboys must surrender their FIRST and THIRD round draft picks. Is he worth 2 first-day picks to the Redskins? Expect the same for Marion Barber. |

The sky is falling, the sky is falling. We have been in "salary cap hell" for years and yet continually find ways to give guys way too much. |

Expect the same for Marion Barber.[/quote] And I would expect them to match any offer for Barber rather than take the 1st and 3rd. |
Re: Chris Canty?
Canty is solid, but I think we're more likely to address DE in the draft if GW gets the hc job.
I hope he stays w/the cowpokes anyway. |

I would like to agree, but if that were true, why didn't they already lock Barber up to a long term? But since Rosenhaus is his agent, he may be waiting to entertain offers and get his client a big payday. |
Re: Chris Canty?
I'd much prefer to STOP overpaying everyone else's free agents, retain our own, and place far more emphasis on college scouting and the draft. Look at the two teams in the Super Bowl and name me even ONE free agent that they have overpayed. Also look at how many of their guys are home grown. Just in the last few years, the Giants have drafted Matias Kiwanuka, Justin Tuck, Barry Cofield, and Osi Umenyiora to bolster an already strong D-line that had Michael Strahan and Fred Robbins. Unless we can find bargain free agents the way the Giants did with Antonio Pierce or the Patriots did with numerous guys such as Welker and Vrabel, I'd just as soon stay out of the high stakes bidding.

I know a lot of us share that sentiment. While I don't want Canty in DC, I think he would be a pretty good & affordable pickup if he were an unrestricted FA. I certainly wouldn't consider him a big name free agent. Ideally, guys like Canty - decent but not spectacular - are the best value in free agency; they can start immediately but not break the bank. I think that's the prudent way of spending in free agency & is what we did this past offseason signing Smoot & Fletcher. I look forward to seeing a greater commitment to the draft, but they'll always sign a couple of players in free agency. |
Re: Chris Canty?
Decent? Canty is a monster... 6-7, 299. 3-4 D doesn't translate into to big numbers for a DE. And- Canty still had 43 tackles, 30 solo, and 3 1/2 sacks. I don't know if he would be worth a #1 pick... but I wouldn't argue against it. If he wasn't comming off a knee and an eye injury- he would of been drafted in the 1st. And a big run stopping, bull rushing DE is the type the skins need.

Re: Chris Canty?
I've never thought Canty or Spears were playing that well.

he's good, is he above avg.? probably, but he's certainly not an elite DE. I know in the 3-4 it's more like playing DT in a 4-3 so the sack #s aren't there. He'll get a big payday, but let JJ pay it. I don't think he's worth a 1st pick. |

Canty is a monster in size only. his on field production doesn't match the kind of money he is looking for. ill pass on him |
Re: Chris Canty?
I don't know how Canty would translate into the 4-3 either. I don't think there's any reason to take a guy who hasn't proven himself as a 4-3 pass rusher. I watched a lot of Dallas games and I'm not sure exactly what he is, how fast he is, or how he gets off the edge.

Good point... I agree. And, he's from Dallas- which by itself is a mark against him. With that said, on that side we do need a big DE who can stop the run and rush the pass. And, we need all the draft picks we can get, if it's true we're switching to a 3-4. Ughhhhhh! |
