Super Bowl Saturday?

I caught a few seconds of Colin Cowturd talking about this yesterday and to me it makes perfect sense. The Monday after the Super Bowl is one of the biggest days for people calling in sick to work, so why not move the game to a Saturday? People can party hard on Saturday and have Sunday to sleep off the hangover and get back to work on Monday.

I'm all for it how about you?

Yes and Yes!

Re: Super Bowl Saturday?

The bad thing about Sunday is the start time of the game. 6:30pm with a 45 minute halftime (it seems that long!) makes for an ending after 10pm. My son is 10 and really in to football right now, but it is a school night and he will have to go to bed before the game is over! Start the game at 3pm!

He said Saturday, not Sunday. This would only benefit the young viewers who could stay up late Saturday to watch the whole event.

That's why its so famous, SUPER SUNDAY!!

Young viewers do not pay the bills though - do not buy the product advertised... hence why they do not care about the young fan.

I can't see a reason why it would hurt revenues to the NFL. You'd still have the same number of TV viewers.

Makes sense to me.

Basically it is easier to be hung over on Sunday then Monday.

Yeah but moving it to Saturday sounds like a great idea.

Super Bowl Saturday is a GREAT idea, but let's not give the Cowturd credit for coming up with that. I've heard the concept kicked around for years. Somebody needs to get the memo to Goodell.

Re: Super Bowl Saturday?

I'm not sure how it came up exactly, but I'm pretty sure Cowturd wasn't taking credit for it. He said he's been receiving emails about the topic for years.

I'd enjoy the game a lot more if it was on Saturday even though I'd be twice as hungover the next day... :party-smi

Re: Super Bowl Saturday?

He also said the NFL is already aware of it and probably has it in the works. It's one of those things like flex scheduling that is a no-brainer. It will happen someday.

I already took off Monday, and Tuesday acutally. Im flying to Phoenix and am goign to try to go to the game, and taking the two days off made my plane tickets super cheap.

Anyone got an extra ticket to the game they want to give me!!??

Re: Super Bowl Saturday?

I usually go pretty hard on super sunday, I didn't even know who won the damn thing when the panthers were in it. I think I blacked out somewhere during that halftime show. Anyway knowing myself I took off Feb. 4th this year as a precaution. Just wish the skins were in it, or at least some team I liked. At this rate I'm pulling for my squares and injuries. and maybe for belichick to get knocked out.

To get the memo to Commissioner Goodell here's what you need:

NFL

New York, NY 10017.

Re: Super Bowl Saturday?

We were just talking about this at work today. It makes total sense to move it to Saturday. Other than a "tradition" thing I don't think there really is a good reason not to make the move. If anything, it'll stimulate the economy because productivity at work will increase and more people will be apt to spend more money on Saturday knowing they don't have to take it easy because they have to work the next day.

OK, the only thing I am worried about is that that prick will sit there on that show and gloat for two hours about how his idea saved football.

You make your son go to school the day after the Super Bowl? JK. My kids have the same rule for the Super Bowl as for MNF, no nap, no game.
With the added week before the game I'd have no problem with a Saturday night game. I think it would reduce drunk driving after the game because if you've had too much you can sleep at the host house rather than taking a risk to be able to get up for work.

Daseal 01-25-2008 11:52 PM

Re: Super Bowl Saturday?

I really can't think of a reason to keep it on Sunday. Typically, football is kinda hangover medicine during the regular season. Wake up Sunday, turn on the TV at 1, turn it off at 10. The Super Bowl is a different story!

The big downside for the NFL is the host city loses 1 day of huge revenues.

As I understand it, a big issue is all the corporate/sponsor events (read: parties) that are held on Saturday night prior to the big game. Also, what Daseal said about the city's losses

Only two problems:

1) My wife makes a scene about Saturday night football.

2) The teams only have 13 days to prepare.

Re: Super Bowl Saturday?

Daseal/Smootsmack:

You have identified the reasons that the game will probably stay on Sunday. Let's look at the "balance of power" here:

On one side, you have big time corporate sponsors who want to have their shindigs on Saturday night and the host cities who want to have fans - and those corporate sponsors - spending money in the host cities for the maximum amount of time.

On the other side, you have a host of fans who got themselves hammered watching the game and have difficulty getting to work the next day.

Let's try to guess which side of the see-saw the NFL is going to come down on...

great post. plus, "super bowl saturday" just doesn't sound as cool

Re: Super Bowl Saturday?

Super bowl has to be on Sunday...what needs to happen is that the US Government needs to move either MLK day or Presidents Day to the first Monday in February. Those 2 holidays fall about two weeks before and after the super bowl every year so I don't see the big deal in moving one of them. Then it's up to the NFL to make sure the Super Bowl alwasy falls on the 1st Sunday in Feb.

There is a petition somewhere online to make Super Bowl Monday a holiday. I signed it, would love to see it happen.

That would be cool! Maybe we could put up a Super Bowl tree or hang helmets instead of stockings...LOL!

Seriously, I'm all for moving the big game to Saturday or having a holiday the day after.

I'm all about this also. I even e-mail Riggo about it when he was talking about changes in Superbowl venue. I also don't understand why the college football championship is held in the middle of the week. Superbowl Saturday would be great, and you could have a lot of fun and be hungover on Sunday.
