Are we the Detroit Lions?

It is becoming painfully more obvious that we are laughed at around the league. From the way we handle the draft to the way we hire a coach to throwing cash at underachievers. Yet, we still sell out every game and the fan base grows. Almost every city in the country has an official Redskins fan club. The owner tries hard to win a championship (despite his failings) and will spend money. The fans care. The team has legacy and a strong history.
What's wrong?
In Detroit, DC, Cleveland and Kansas City fans live for their team (among others). The average Bostonian would rather see the Sox play a day game than another SB. In NY they have so many teams in different sports it's hard to say which is biggest. But these are the SB teams?
We are Detroit now. Vinny is Matt Millen and beautiful FedEx is just like beautiful Ford Field (though they at least can get a SB hosted there).
I pray that we don't endure the gap between championships that Detroit has, but it wouldn't suprise me.
So find solace, fellow fans, there are others like us out there. Of course, we can still laugh at the Texans. For now.

Re: Are we the Detroit Lions?

Over the past 15 years the Skins are closer to being the Lions & Cards than they are to being the Cowboys & Pats.

Nobody (except for the Kool-Aid drinkers on this site) sees the Skins as an elite team anymore. They are seen as a disorganized mess where underachieving players go to get paid.

What does Jerry Jones do that Dan Snyder doesn't? More importantly, what does Jones do that Belichick/Pioli also do?

LOL. I don't even think the "kool aid drinkers" see the Skins as an elite team.

And what makes the Cowboys so much better than the Skins? Why are you a fan of the Redskins? Seriously.

Yeah seriously.

When was the last time Dallas won a playoff game??

Here's the kicker, even the lowly Redskins have won one more recently.

MTK 01-28-2008 02:20 PM

Re: Are we the Detroit Lions?

The Skins haven't been an elite team in quite some time, but they certainly haven't been quite as bad as the Detroits and Arizonas of the NFL world. Last time I checked neither of those teams made the playoffs 2 of the last 3 seasons.

What makes the Cowboys better than the Skins? Since the Skins last Super Bowl win the Cowboys have won as many Super Bowls as the Skins have playoff appearances.

Since the Cowboys last Super Bowl appearance, they haven't even won a playoff game. Thats one less than the Redskins.

Actually that would be 3 of 15.

But hey why stop there, let's just keep going back 20 years, 25 years, hell even 50 years.

Dallas Cowboys wins by year, 1997 to present:

6,10,8,5,5,5,10,6,9,9,13. Four games below .500 in that span. Zero playoff wins.

Go JJ!

The Cowboys run of the 90's is long over with in case you missed it. Not really relevant to today or even this decade.

No one cares how good the Cowboys were between 15 and 12 years ago. Not me, not their fans, and not Jerry Jones. You shouldn't either.

It's OK to admit you are wrong here, really.

I was not trying to compare the Skins to the Cowboys. My point is that the Skins are closer to a bottom dweller than to the top.

MTK 01-28-2008 02:33 PM

Re: Are we the Detroit Lions?

15 years ago the Patriots were one of the worst franchises in all of sports. How is that relevant to today? Why do people always want to dig so far into the past when talking about the current state of different franchises?? How about a more realistic time frame? Maybe the last 5-7 years?

Re: Are we the Detroit Lions?
I have no idea (which is why I am asking) but how many games below .500 are the Skins since 1997?
Eleven.

Clearly the Skins are not the model NFL Franchise. But eleven games under is comprable to Dallas.

Because New England is 56 games over .500 in that timeframe.

BDBohnzie 01-28-2008 02:40 PM

Re: Are we the Detroit Lions?

We are not the Detroit Lions. No winning record since 2000, no playoffs since 1999, no playoff win since 1991, no Super Bowl titles, no League title since 1957.

And while the Redskins are not among the elite, they are not among the bottom dwellers either.

Next question.

MTK 01-28-2008 02:42 PM

Re: Are we the Detroit Lions?

For the record in this decade the Cowboys are 62-66. The Redskins are 58-70. A whopping 4 game difference.

Re: Are we the Detroit Lions?

The Cards are 52 games below .500 since 1997

The Lions are also 52 games below .500 since 1997.

So conclusion: Lions comparable to Cards, Skins comparable to Cowboys, Pats comparable to no one.
