Jim Zorn will be great!!
Marks my words, Zorn will be great for us if only Campbell understands this offense. I really believe that we needed a fresh face to run our offense. This guy has never called plays before so no one can really gameplan for him yet. I just hope that he brings that MIke Holmgren offensive gamplanning with him. Holmgren is a genius on offense. It also helps that he was a quarterback before in this league.

Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
Don't think you'll get much of an argument here, the prof however will be in the pudding.
|
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
well Campbell needs work on his short passes regardless of what "system" he's in...so hopefully Zorn can help him work on that
|
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
According to his wiki profile he was the OC at Utah St. from '92-'94 so I'm assuming he's called plays before.
|
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
Just hasn't called plays in the NFL. I think he'll be a good OC and will for sure help JC
|
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
I have to admit I worry if this new system is going to be a good fit for Jason. Even if he adjusts to it, will a strict west-coast offense really exploit his strengths (big pocket presence and a rocket arm)?
Of course, we really have no idea what kind of system is actually going to be implemented. Since Campbell's development is clearly such a priority for ownership, you have to assume Zorn impressed on them that he will streamline things for Jason. The biggest problem with Saunders was that he didn't do that. As good as his system looked with Collins running it, the fact that he seemingly didn't adjust it to suit Jason is just as big an indictment of his performance as OC here, imo. |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
I really think Zorn will look to cater the offense to JC's strengths. I don't think anyone runs a true WC offense anymore. It's come so far down the tree now that everyone is running their own hybrid type of scheme.
|
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
How good the offense is all depends on how well Campbell plays. Part of that will be Zorn designing an offense that Campbell can succeed in, but it's mostly if Campbell can become into the franchise quarterback that we all hope he is.

Exactly, I don't think Zorn and Fasselucci (whoever it is) is coming here to recreate Jason Campbell. This will be his 4th season, not a rookie still trying to get his feet wet. Young veteran QBs are expected to pick up the system and make plays. We've seen, when given the chance, JC can put up some strong numbers in the passing game. I think Zorn will go heavily with 3 & 4 WR (with Cooley being split out in the slot or out wide counting as one of the WR) open up running lanes for Portis, unlike the clogged schemes we saw the past 4 years, and run a more vertical WCO.. The Pats, Cowboys, Packers and Giants showed that an aggressive, vertical passing game is the way to be successful in today's NFL. |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
JC needs to step his game up also..Opt out of the night at the bar or club and learn your playbook....stop dumbing down the book..you're a professional..Go Zorn

campbell came in immediately after he was drafted to learn the playbook while waiting until he was legally allowed to practice with the team. He spends a lot of time here in the off-season going over it too. it's not his fault gibbs didn't trust a young qb to run the full playbook. that one's on gibbs. the injuries and subpar play of portis and moss (at times) also hurt the O last year. |

Shit, he needs to work on the long ones to Moss too! |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
Who says Zorn is calling the plays?
Just because he's our "offensive coordinator" doesn't mean he's necessarily calling plays. If we end up with Fassel or Mooch, they might want to do it themselves. I'm not saying the HC will do it, but we shouldn't assume Zorn's going to be doing it quite yet. |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
Jim Zorn learned to coach under Mike Holmgren in Seattle, so the offensive system he is most comfortable in coaching would stand to be the West Coast offense. I'm not sold on Zorn coming in and adjusting to Campbell, but I'm not really high on '08 for the Skins right now. Need more kool-aid

Yeah that's my understanding as well. Seahawks tried to keep Zorn badly and offered him more money but with the skins this was too big a promotion to give us. He choose to leave his home town and team he played for to come here and make this offense great. That's exciting stuff. |

and hopefully this offense will get great gas mileage too,:)and not be too bogged down like it has been. |

I agree, and to piggy-back just a little on your concept, I'm sure during the course of the interview process, various things were discussed. Jim Zorn is well aware of Jason Campbell's strengths' as well as his weaknesses, and feel he can work comfortably with him in whatever area of his game that needs atention to bring about his desired result. If he didn't think he could work succsssfully with Jason, I don't think he would have taken the job. There are various versions of the WCO that can benefit from Jason's big arm as well. |

Yours is a seriously over-friendly post. WOW... I think someone is confusing Campbell with Romo, or Pacman Jones. :Flush: |

Hasselbeck is a geek but very sucessful in his career with the Seahawks. Zorn was a major part of that sucess and how they brought on Senica so quickly really gives me confidence that Jason will be even more improved in 08'. |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
Right now the limiting factor is Campbell. He is so slow with the ball I hope its not a problem with this new offense.
Saunders would have added a modern touch to the offense but Gibbs wouldnt let him because he was stuck in an 80s style O that was too run focused. |

Saunders offense too complex and dated. He didn't make his reads in time or know where to go with the ball. JC clearly needs to work on his check down reads you're right. He's going to be fine. |

AS's O is complex but not dated. Its Gibbs who was dated by wanting to run first and pass second. The NFL is now a pass first run second league but Gibbs was too conservative to let AS do his thing and modernize the O. Actually, Giibbs himself said he needed to modernize the O which is why AS came here in the first place. Too bad Gibbs wouldnt let him. |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
The funny thing is our highest offensive ranking under Gibbs this time around was when he was calling the shots in 2005 (11th overall). IMO we would have been better off if Gibbs just stuck with running the offense himself.

Maybe. Remember in 06 Portis was hurt and in 07 the line was injury riddled, IMO that does not provide the formula for a successful run first O. I think in the end even had Gibbs turned AS loose the Skins just didnt have the talent at QB to really make the system work. |

What makes you think he'll be great? He hasn't even called plays for an NFL team yet. No NFL coordinator experience. Let him learn somewhere else. I don't like the the hire at all. But I'm going to assume that if Fassel or Mooch gets the job then they will call the plays, not Zorn. |

Because he was great with Matt and he developed into a probowl QB. What's more important? Calling great plays or the skill to work with and develope a QB to maximize their talents. He may or may not call the plays but he will work very closely with JC and he's got 9 years experience as offensive QB coach for Seattle. |

No doubt. That was his M.O., he was a master at putting together an offensive scheme (but I can't overlook how the injury bug just seemed to kill us every year, we are due for that bug to get outta DC). I was very disappointed when he brought in Al to take over what I thought was his strongest asset in football. Of course I'm not taking away from any of Joe's other strengths as he has many. |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
The whole reason Dan is bringing Zorn in is to develope JC. I'm still not sold on how good of an OC he will be, but I did think it was time for Al to go. His sytem has worked great for other teams he has coached, but not so well in Washington. I think he tried to hard to adapt Jason to the sytem and not a system that fit his players.
Sure hope the westcoast O works for us, need to find a big and strong reciever to go with S.Moss and El and I hope it is Randy Moss who Danny Boy and his fluncky Vinny C. can get. |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
I'm optimistic too. After all, it's the postseason. But doesn't a rookie offensive coordinator favor Fassel or Mariucci as a head coach, rather than Meeks, Schwartz, et al.?

Well I do think we have an upgrade from Lazor to Zorn. But it's really too bad how they are treating Lazor. He did a solid job with JC last year and to leave him hanging is not very professional. Snyder and Vinny suck. |

Everything is pointing to Mooch. He has ties to Dan's butt buddy Vinny, he has worked with Blache in the past and he and Zorn both worked with Mike H. |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
Here are a couple of good reason why I think Redskins fans should stop complaining about Jim Zorn.
1) Jim Zorn is a proven coach that will bring out the best in Jason Campbell 2) Jason Campbell was good in a west coast type offense in college football(And yes Zorn is bringing his own version of the west coast offense) 3) His play book is not 700 + pages long Thanks for the correction angryssg(I need to learn to proof read what I write) |

It is yet to be seen whether that is a pro or a con. I assume that you believe it to be a pro, and I agree to a point. The versatility that the 700 page playbook offered to a Veteran QB is immense. I agree that it might have been overwhelming to a youg QB like Campbell. On a side note, where is the Steelers Playbook from Rothlisberger's rookie year? That is the one I want. |

Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
Our new coach will call the plays...Zorn has an overinflated title. just like Buges (he's a damn line coach for heavens sake!)
No way the Skins allow a kid with zero playcalling experience take over. Saunders has called thousands of plays to his zero. No doubt our new head coach will be Offensive. (pun intended) |
Re: Jim Zorn will be great!!
I think he will be a great OC for the Skins. If he calls plays like he did from his playing days, it will be exciting. Jim Zorn was one of the most exciting QBs of his era . . . I loved watching him play. He was a better runner, scrambler than Staubach or Tarkenton. As a lefty, he was Steve Young before Steve Young . . .
