Not surprising. Ok, let's all panic about this move now |
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
We have more assistant head coach/"Position", than any team in the league lol.
|
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
he was the running back under jim hannifan and the st loius cardinals with neil lomax as their QB ......
|
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
I r elite redsk1n fan. dis is unacceptable grrrrrrrrrrrrr im so angry.
All I'm hoping is that Alexanders drop in production is related more to his health then the coaching of Stump Mitchell. |
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Stump was a great RB when he played for the Cardinals.

I know I bought my spot for $9.95. I'm now the assistant HC of southeast Georgia Redskin fans. |

He had the reputation as a fumbler. In one Game against the Redskins Dexter Manley offered him $50.00 to fumble, and guess what? He did. I guess we should welcome him aboard. |
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Great move. Guess Byner will be heading to the Northwest now. Sad to see him go, but this is Zorn's offense and a few of his guys are needed on the staff. Stump finished his career averaging 4.7 ypc. He was a great rec. out of the backfield too and I can remember a few games when he was with the Cards that he torched us. I really like this hire.
Stump was a great RB when he played for the Cardinals.
otis anderson and roy green i do remember we had some very good battles with the cardinals didn,t we.. i was at the 83/84 nfc east championship game where moseley kicked the winning field goal at my end..
so yes stump was a very solid player and i think a solid hire as well. thanks to ernest byner for giving it his all in the burgundy and gold as a player and coach....thanks and good luck to ya... |
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Well two down one to go, get Sherman Smith under contract and the coaching staff is complete. I would be surprised if Smith isn't a done deal tonight or tomorrow.
|
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
I feel bad for Byner, wasn't he working with Ozzie Newsome on personnel when he was with the Ravens? Maybe he could help out in that area.
|
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
If he creates a good flow between Zorn and our running backs as it relates to the system, then I'm all for it. I don't think this is horrible or great. It's plainly a sound move, and will give Zorn a proper venue to and more importantly an additional teacher for the running backs who will be learning a new offense. Plus it adds someone who Zorn has worked with for a while. I'm cool with it.

Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
I thought Byner had re-signed here? I heard that reported on 980 not too long ago. I guess that was wrong.
|
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
This is not a great move. Where's the love for Earnest Byner? The guy did an excellent job coaching for us, he is loved by Portis and Betts (and Rock, even though he's basically a special teams guy now). I am surprised that folks will so quickly cast him aside (for crying out loud he played for the Redskins, unlike Mitchell). So much for consistency.

Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Byner is one of my favorite players of all time. And I do feel bad for him. I wish there could have been a way for him to stay.
But if he's not able to teach this offense as well as Mitchell then it's really of no benefit to keep him here. And there is often more than one side to a story |
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
what i remember about stump is punching the goalpost after scoring,I think it was him

He did, signed a 1 yr. deal. Maybe they will have to pay him if he doesn't go elsewhere. JLC said they were looking to 'trade' rb coaches w/seattle. So now that we have stump, maybe he's headed west. |

Which, of course, raises the question if EB couldn't teach the WCO in Washington, D.C. why would he be able to coach in the WCO in Washington State? As a first timer Zorn needs to surround himself was as many of 'his guys' as possible. The way EB's contracts have been handled differently than much of the other coaching staff (shorter in length, I believe, not extended in the same manner) you get the feeling someone didn't like his style for whatever reason even before the Zorn hire. |
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Sucks for Byner but at the same time I think Zorn definitely needs a few of "his guys" around to help get his offense up and running.

Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Good hire. Mitchell has been in this offense since 1999 when Holmgren came to Seattle. He will have Portis & Betts up to speed quickly IMO.
I will miss Byner. He was a great player and coach for us, sad to see him go and hope he does well. |

You say Earnest did an excellent job here so what did he do? Didn't portis have fumble issues this year? What happened to Betts? If he is that great of a running coach I'm sure he will get snatched up anytime now. OK, yes he was a Skin and I dod like having former players on the coaching staff but only if they are helping the team so please explain. |
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Nobody is casting Byner aside. Typical freakout reaction.
Fact is Zorn is close with Mitchell and he is familiar with the WCO. The more help the better. |
Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Funny how Byner went for Tampa job well before Zorn was hired. Gruden didn't hire Byner now its looking like he's not needed. With our coaching staff why not keep another?

Sherman Smith's quote below doesn't look promising "I work for Jeff Fisher, who I believe is the best coach in football," Smith said. "We have a team that is on the rise. So do we disrupt our lives here and go up there and be a part of what Jim's going to do?" Re: Redskins Name Stump Mitchell Assistant Head Coach-Running Backs
Assistant Head Coach of Redskins is like VP title at a Bank.
Don't mean much, but you'll take it! |

Here's my explanation: Although CP fumbled more this year than most (although only 1 more time than 2004), the Redskins have been very effective running the ball under Byner's leadership. The stats* are as follows: 2007 -- 8th in the league rushing 2006 -- 4th in the league rushing 2005 -- 7th in the league rushing 2004 -- 21st in the league rushing (Byner's 1st year as the coach) *Source: NFL.com - Official Site of the National Football League. So even factoring in his 1st year (which was also his 1st year coaching that position ), we have averaged 10th in the league in rushing. And our passing game has not been stellar during that period, which means that we've averaged these numbers when every team knows we're going to run AND when we play two teams twice per season (Dallas and Philly) which have excelled in run defense during that entire time. In addition, CP had significant injury issues last year and yet our running game did not slip when he went out -- not many teams can boast that kind of consistency in the backfield. Betts did not need to step it up this year because CP was healthy and getting the job done. The key here is to make sure that we are consistenyly a top-10 rushing team and Byner did that. |
