UFAs Briggs and Samuel

Given that two of our young defensive players, Rogers and McIntosh, are recovering from serious injuries, I was curious to get people's opinion on two big time unrestricted free agents: Lance Briggs and Asante Samuel. I know that Briggs is the most likely out of these two to come to Washington, but Samuel could be a nice addition to our defensive unit. I honestly think that had Samuel not gotten tagged last year by the Patriots, he would've come here.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

I am not entirely opposed to the idea of bringing Briggs here for the right price. As for Samuel, I think the draft has several good DBs that the need for him really isn't there. Especially not at the high price he'd command.

Can Briggs play within your defensive system ,many questions on that.As for Samuel if he leaves he's going to the Jets.

Briggs would be nice, he likes 2 hit but only at the right price i don't want 2 over pay for anyone i'm tired of doing that, its not my money but i'm tired of other teams laughing at us. Samuel's might be a product of the system i hold judgement on him plus i think he's goiing to ask for way 2 much $ can't blalme him but i think it's out of our price range.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

I not big on Briggs but like for the Skins to look at Antwan Odom DE and Tommy Kelly DT! The go get Brayant Johnson WR and Jacob Bell G! Then with our draft get a DT and a CB in the first two rounds! As you can see by the Giants great season just played a great D line works well with good LB's. We don't need Briggs!

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

Both are character issues. Both are good players, but they both would want tons of cash. I say our LB's are fine...draft a DB and see if you can maybe get a little veteran depth for cheaper.

I agree with the samuel comment. I believe that he is a product of a system. He is a good player, but I don't think that he is Champ Bailey or Nate Clements type talent. He is a good player, but I don't want to pay the money that he is asking.

I couldn't agree more.
He is a smart cover 2 corner. He wants too much money for his skill set. He can't take a WR out of a game.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

I hope we sign neither. Briggs is one of the most over rated defensive players in the league in my book. He tackles well and is average in coverage, he cant pass rush and knowing chicago is willing to let him walk should be a red flag. I have a feeling if we signed him it would be another Jeremiah Trotter situation. I dont think we go after samuel either because we were targeting Clements last year until the niners gave him that ridiculous contract...some team will give samuel the same money if not more and i hope it isnt us.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

Both of them are overrated and will cost way too much money. It would be a mistake to sign either of them.

First question is what is going to be done with McIntosh and Rogers?

are jacob bell and odom even free agents, if they are I say these would be excellent moves for the redskins. if not trade ladell betts for rights to Pacman Jones, Jacob bell and antwan ODOM. then draft jamall charles in the third round from Texas

I believe they both are free agents. Regardless, suppose they weren't-did you just say trade Betts for Odom, Bell, and Pac Man??

Briggs would be nice but he would be too pricy... We all know by the way he held out in Chicago that he thinks hes way better than he actually is.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

The latest reports are that McCintosh will be ready for camp. I honestly don't see were Briggs brings anything off the edge and I also believe he is better in Chi-town because off Urlacher. But Blache should be a good judge if Briggs is a good fit or not.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

Yes, that is just what we need. More FAs in long term deals. Shelf life of most of these guys is 5-8 years, tops. We need to build with young, hungry talent from the draft. As long as someone other than DS is in charge of talent eval and selection.

That Guy 02-18-2008 11:45 PM

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

don't waste big money on LBs when slightly lesser talent is available cheaply.

briggs would be nice, but not over a stud WR or DE and that's where i rather put the money, if possible.

either way, when you change staffs like we just have, the first year back probably isn't going to be a great run into the playoffs, so it might be better to wait a year, give the cap some room and see how well the guys we have are playing in december.

I mean, if a great deal comes up, that's one thing, but overspending when we're just not in a (historically) good position to make the playoffs, well, that'd just hurt us even more down the road, especially when we're talking about guys that don't really address an immediate need.

I completely agree. I would pay for Briggs, but not for Samuel, especially after that huge contract the Nate Clements got in SF. Samuel will no doubt look for something better than the $80 mill that Nate got.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

I'm on board with Briggs now. I wasn't sold last year but now with the way our LBs look I can justify going after him.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

i gotta say i really dont want us to sign one big name this offseason. I want us to draft our depth so bad. when looking at the future i guess briggs could be the replacement for washington and samuel for springs. I also look at HB Blades as our future middle linebacker so I want players that are going to listen to him. like players younger then him who will look up to him. of course i dont play for the team so i have no idea how it would actually work out but thats the way i look at it, could be wrong

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

i dont think we need briggs , theres alot other options avalible at lb in the free agent market who will be good enuff. but a.samuel im not oposed to ,he is a ball hawk who causes turn overs, which without sean taylor there isnt anyone that can do that in are secondary consitently.shawn springs can shut down a wr ,but isnt much for pics. plus he slowing down a little( rember talks about moving him to safty last year) an him and his big contract will be gone next year leaving a whole that a recovering carlos rodgers will not be able to fill. then draft a dlineman in the 1st rnd, and pick up some backups/starters in free agency at other pos. wr from seattle dj hacket ,also from seattle g f wolmack ,lb boss bailey det or v hobson from the jets and either a odm or t laboy both de from the titans. but if we dont get samuel then d florence from chargers and go after coery williams dt from packers if he doesnt get franchised soon.

GTripp0012 02-20-2008 02:18 PM

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

A Briggs signing would spell the end of the line--or the delayed departure, of Marcus Washington. We're probably not planning on going too far foward with a 28 year old, a 32year old, and a 33 year old at linebacker.

Did you watch the Seattle Playoff game at all? We do have Laron Landry who, I'm sorry, will be better then Sean Taylor in my opinion.

your right landry will be a beast for us , and he did have thouse picks once they moved him into seans postion. but im still not sure hell consitently get picks. i hope he does and think he will ,but regardless we need to cause more turnovers. now whether we get them from improved dline play or a boost in the secondary, doesnt matter aslong as we get them.and i would like the cb trio of springs (shut down there top wr) ,samuel (ballhawk) , and smoot (tackle machine), and landry (hard hitter) back there too.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

If we are not going to video tape the other teams signals and know the plays like the Patriots did, I don't want Asante Samuel. He is good player, but I don't believe that he is worth the money that he is asking for. Briggs seems like an impact player, but I don't know that I would necessarily want a player who is going to be a problem down the road about his money. Let's not forget the fact that he had an issue off the field with Drunk driving incident and then also filing a false police report.

Re: UFAs Briggs and Samuel

I don't know how you're going to make Briggs work. By signing him your either saying that your switching to a 3-4 or you're giving up on Washington or Rocky.

As I said in another thread the front office needs to rely on its ability to identify good players in the draft. They've done an excellent job with the picks they have had and not capitalizing on that ability is a huge waste.

What about Blades? He was a tackling machine at Pittsburgh. Hopefully he'll learn from Fletcher and be ready to take over in 09. Is Rocky already 28 going into his 3rd year? That doesn't sound right. Anyhow I think we're fine with those two guys and we'll have to get somebody for Washington, either throught the draft or FA. But whatever we do let's not OVERPAY for Briggs. I just don't see him worth the $ he's going to ask for. He's a nice player but I didn't see him sacking the QB very often.

Rule of thumb. If you have a video of yourself doing something cool on YouTube! you deserve a shot.

However yeah, I'd like to give Blades a shot. I really hope the front office stays away from what I like to call Madden tactics. Besides we're already strapped for cap room this year. Right now I'm hoping for

- Hacket at WR
- Smiley at Guard
- Florance at CB
- DE, DT, and OL in the draft.

The bucs are singing up everyone and its crap, we need to grab someone like Coleman cus hes the HIGH motor DT we need. one gapper.

If we signed Briggs, we'd probably be running Marcus (who is only 30) out of town. Anyway, the Briggs signing doesn't look plausible right now.

I don't know about Blades. He might develop, but I think it's best to count on him/Rocky as one player...If Blades does develop, then we can let Rocky walk after his RFA year (2009).

Why would we do that? Blades' natural position is MLB & if he develops he'd take Fletcher's spot in a year or two. Rocky is a weak side olb.

I can only see letting him walk if he's still injured or asking way too much.
