Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
ESPN - Campbell to start at QB, Collins to be backup - NFL
Looks like J.C. is the hands down starter. How do you feel about that? |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
It's a no brainer. However it wouldn't have been if Gibbs had stayed around.

i agree Gibbs would have had it up for grabs, but it would have been under Saunders system of course it would have been open comp. |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
Campbell is a first round pick going into his fourth year. He better be the starter. This is also around the time where he should start living up to his potential and being able to win games at the end when he needs to.
|
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
Jason Campbell should be the starter, Zorn is making the right decision. I'm still not sold on Collins as the backup, but I think he earned the backup spot at the end of last season.

Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
Collins to be backup.....? A little early to predict that, he isn't even signed. I think it's to be determined who the #2 & #3 QB's will be at this point, or anyones guess.
JLC blog: Posted at 2:58 PM ET, 02/22/2008 Zorn on Todd Collins As told to Maske at the Combine: "Todd Collins is a free agent. He's a guy that I'm concerned about, that we try to nail down if we can. ... because he's a veteran [and] because he proved to himself, he proved to the football team that it can be confident in him if he has to go in and play. I think he'll be good for Jason. Again, it's a veteran instructing a younger guy when I'm not in the room. I just think that he has a sense of rhythm and he has the sense of timing that it takes to run plays and get the ball out. He's learned different systems. He hasn't always been in one system. He'll only have to learn some of the facets of it." Zorn said he has spoken to Collins. "He's got to make sure he does his due diligence, too. He is a free agent. I'm not concerned about that. He's going to do what's best for himself, his family. I'm hoping that he would do what's best for the Washington Redskins. That will be something that he has to figure out for himself, and then hopefully we can put it together." Zorn said Campbell would be the clear starter. "There's competition. I don't think that Todd should come in here feeling like, 'I'm never going to play. Woe is me.' He'd better come in thinking that he's got to get himself ready. He's got to push Jason and take over if he can. And then Jason has got to think to himself, 'I'm the guy. This is my team. I'm not looking back.' " |

Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
Not having to look over his shoulder during training camp will help Campbell's mental state. He'll be able to exude the confidence he'll need to learn how to win games late (instead of throwing them away with INT's).
|
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
Jason should be the unquestioned starter. TC had a nice run but we've got to continue developing JC.
I hope Collins comes back; I think he's a great insurance policy to have. |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
the suggestion of a controversy was ridiculous from day one. like steveo395 said, he is a 1st round pick in his fourth year. so what if collins played well and won a few games while jason was hurt? that's what a back up qb is supposed to do!
the fact that collins played well is reason to bring him back for another year to COMPETE for a job as a BACK UP. that. is. all. |

Anyone here think JC was about to do that? I think sitting down and seeing the team win without him was a great wakeup call! Time to start winning son. |

I see this said all the time about not having to look over his shoulder. If his ego or confidence is that weak then he will not make it in the NFL. |

Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
No question JC is the man. TC was good for a little but he isnt good or young enough to be a realistic nfl starter.
|
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
JC should be the unquestioned starter, but as for Tod Collins run last year, I think it was more to do with better play by the offense as a whole unit and his better understanding of the Al Saunders offense.
|
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
JC the man all the way, now he needs a tall, fast and shore handed receiver 2 go with Cooley, Moss and EL

You are absolutely right. If he is going to be the player we all hope he can be it is going to happen this year. |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
I like what Zorn is doing. Already he is building JC up. JC will probably spend more time with Zorn than his wife. I look for a much improved JC.

Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
put up or shut up time for campbell
How so? He's got roughly the equivalent time of 1 full season as a starting QB and is going to be implementing a new offense. So if he struggles at all you want to show him the door despite most NFL people saying he's likely our franchise QB for the next 10 years? After George, Banks, Matthews, Wuerffel, Ramsey & Brunell, Jason is a breath of fresh air and more talented than all of them combined. I know it's not much to compare to, but for the first time in a long time I am genuinely excited about the Redskins QB situation. While I think Zorn is going to do wonders for Campbell and turn him into a Pro Bowl QB, I'm not sure it's going to be overnight. |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
I am glad that JC is going to be our starter next year. He should be. I am excited to see what Zorn can do with JC.
|
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
I still think the transition to a West Coast Offense won't be as tough for Jason Campbell as some of you guys think. He played in a West Coast Offense at Auburn under Al Borges and Tommy Tuberville when he won the National Championship in 2004.
I'm sure the terminology will be a little different but he and Zorn are both smart enough to compare notes and figure out a system they can communicate under. He'll be fine as long as he can limit his mistakes. |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
Campbell is about a year away from the prime of his career. This is the time he needs to be on the field getting his trial by fire, not watching someone else.

Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
I don't understand why are we trying to keep Collins, he is a system QB. I would rather get a cheap vet versed in the west coast offense let go of costly collins and Brunnel and then draft a 3rd qb.
|
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
Good News. Todd was phenominal in the backup role, but when you see the strides that Jason was making during his time as starter, I think this is a very easy decision. Yes, he needs to be a little more clutch at the ends of games now, and he's gone through a lot of his growing pains, but the kid has the potential to be very, very good. As someone else said, he's a first round pick in his fourth year, if he's not the starter, than its time to draft someone who is....

We'll still probably pick up someone like Dilfer to be the #3. Collins is a solid backup as he proved last year and he would be a good fit in this offense. Seems kinda stupid to not try to bring him back if you ask me. |

We don't know that for sure. Just because he hasn't played in recent years in a different system, doesn't mean he can't do it. |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
I feel TC could be very effective in a WC Offense. His ability to make quick reads and get the ball out of his hands quickly could make his value to us alot more than people expect and give him credit for. TC is very coachable and very adaptable; his not so strong arm would be better suited for a WC type offense I feel. Appeared this past season that he excelled in the short to mid range passes another good thing for a WC type of offense. I feel Coach Zorn has seen these qualities as well and is a contributing factor in his push to keep TC.

Zorn on Todd Collins - Redskins Insider
Coach Zorn clarifies the situation, making it clear that while Todd would come in as the number two, there is competition for the starting role, and if Jason was not able to perform well, eventually Todd would vault to the starting position. |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
This is the make or break year for JC. If he does not get the job done the Skins will bring in someone that can and draft a QB next year.
|
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
I believe Zorn has said JC is the starter from the moment he got the job. No suprise there.
It is time for JC to step it up a level this year. I think he improved alot from yr 1 to yr 2. Now it's time for him to improve again this year. I don't believe he has to become Peyton Manning back there but he should have a good year. I wouldn't be upset if we took a qb in the middle to late rounds if there's one there that we are really high on. I mentioned this in the "Colt Brennan" thread, but even someone else that has some potential, but what the hell do i know...? |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
This is it for JC in my opinion. He needs to come through period. There will be no excuse either if he gets hurt again. If that does occur then he is not very durable, hence not starter calibre, well starter calibre to build a franchise around anyway. Put up or shut up is my sentiments toward JC in '08. I am not so sure he would have gotten us to the playoffs this past season.

I disagree with you can't keep changing a QB's surroundings like that & he hasn't even had more than a years time under his belt. It's not like he is Rex Grossman you know. |
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
I for one am tired of the badmouthin that Campbell has been under.Collins came in with haelthy players that Jason never had.The redskins had nothing to lose by going wide open.Jason made mistakes but he will be good. With the 700 page playbook out the window everything will seam much simpler now!!
|
Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
TC was good last year when we needed him, but he will do us no good this year. With Saunders gone and a new system in place his mediocrity will show. Its one thing to execute an offense you've been in for like a decade, its quite another to come in and learn something you've never seen before.

Re: Zorn Shines The Light On QB Situation
This from ESPN:
Jason Campbell, Redskins Entering: 4th season Last year: Started 13 games and had a passer rating of 77.6 before a knee injury sidelined him the rest of the season. This year: Don't be surprised if Campbell's game jumps to a higher level under new head coach Jim Zorn, a former NFL QB. Zorn has already talked about helping Campbell improve his techniques and his ability to move around in the pocket. For more on Campbell, click here |

Getting put into a new offense doesn't just mean you lose all the years of experience diagnosing defenses. Nor does it mean you loose your cemistry with the players on your team. Campbell and Collins both have that going for them. Besides that, it is my understanding that Campbell thrived in the West Coast system at Auburn. Is that true? |
