Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Doesn't surprise me. Was hoping he'd goto New England...
He wants to play for a contender and well the Saints aren't exactly that. Pats only offered him vet minimum, so BAM NFC East it is. |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
good signing for them, dude can play as long as hes healthy that is...
|
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
He's old and can't stay healthy. He's a concussion waiting to happen. He's had a very nice career and I like the guy, but I don't think this is a big deal. On a side note, they must not be very happy with '06 1st round pick Bobby Carpenter. He was supposed to be a stud, and in two seasons he only has 1 start and 37 total tackles. Parcells doesn't make too many personnel blunders, but he did with Carpenter.

carpenter did alright when ellis was out but he's avg. at best. He plays OLB & Z. Thomas plays MLB & I presume will play inside in the boys 3-4. Bradie James is one starting ILB, who is the other? Don't know if he'll start or not. |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
I think he still has a year or two left. He's a good pick up for them.
|
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Great pickup for them, bad news for us.
|
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
To everyone who thinks that Thomas was going to sign for the veteran minimum let this be a lesson to you. Guys don't settle for the veteran minimum as often as you think. I wish I could find a list of guys that have signed for the veteran minimum to show you how few quality guys sign for it every year.
On a side note Thomas deal is potentially worth 11 million dollars. |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Well I think the signing was done as a favor to Rosenhaus. He just happens to represent Marion Barber as well and they are in contract talks.
In fact I think the whole meeting with Thomas was done as a favor to Rosenhaus. |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Does anyone know why Zach Thomas is able to be signed when Free Agency doesnt start for another week? Just wondering.
|
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
he'll be injured by week 3 and in and out for the rest of the season, be cut next season, then sign back with the 'Fins in 2009 to officially retire with the team.

Apparently if you're a free agent before the start of Free Agency (ie got cut after the season or sat home all year) then you're allowed to sign with a new team. This doesn't include guys who contracts expired so for example Rock Cartwright can't test the market until free agency opens up. That way teams can use their temporary exclusive negotating rights to retain player before the start of Free Agency. |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Thomas has [emphasis on has] been a fine player for a long time, injuries have set him back the last couple years.
He might find sledding a little tough in the NFC east being a 228lb MLB, if it's Dallas's intent to play him at that position. There's a big difference between the NFC east & the AFC east............Good Luck!! |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
F. dallas.

Yeah they suck! Hey wait a minute! |

Its not as if nobody else wanted his services. Rosenhaus wasn't in a position of weakness...why would he need a favor? |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Good Pickup, even though we are still gonna win at dallas and at home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From all indications I ave read, Dallas was not the one who intitiated contact with respect to Thomas. Thomas has the same agent as a number of players on the team and hence the agent marketed his client. Due to a long standing relationship with the agent, the Cowboys agreed to talk to Thomas. And he came at a price that is affordable. Not to mention if he does not make the grade at camp and gets cut, there is zero cap hit. But on the outside of it all......I smell a trade. |

On a side note Thomas deal is potentially worth 11 million dollars.
LOL...holy crap! If that's true, the Cowboys are dumber than I thought. Sure Thomas is still a good LB, but his serious concussion issues are too much to ignore, and no way he will be worth it. |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
the thomas deal is 3mill max, 1 year
1mill SB, 1mill salary, 1mill incentives based on playing time. |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
good for the cowgirl he is to old and to slow!
|
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Zach Thomas was a fine middle linebacker. way past his prime. and doesn't Dallas play a 3-4? it seems rather odd that Thomas is on the older side, but the cowboys are one of the youngest teams in the league. strange move
|
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Zach if healthy can be a good fit for the Cowboys (i.e. what Seau does for the Pats) and the reason he was able to sign is because he was cut after the season ended but before free agency started

Hey wait a minute!
sandtrapjack i don't understand this signing. thomas is not an inside 3-4 backer. where is he going to play? |

Actually, Miami does play quite a bit of the 3-4. Dom Capers was their D-Coord until recently. But they mix it up between the 3-4 and the 4-3 depending on the offense. But as I understand it, they want to use Zach Thomas on the weakside ILB position, on the same side as DeMarcus Ware. The coaches seem to think that using Thomas this way is very similar to the way that Wade Phillips and Brian Stewart used Donnie Edwards on the same side as Shawn Merriman in San Diego 2 years ago when that defense racked up 60 or so sacks in the season. But Thomas will have to beat out Akin Ayodele for the starting position. If not, that is really not bad depth at all on that side. |

Speaking of which, does anyone know the actual financials on this deal? |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
sweet. im glad we get to see his injured, raggedy, beat up, old ass two times next year.
:) agree? |
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
He's still a good player if he can stay healthy.
|
Re: Cowboys sign LB Thomas
Cowgirls saw how well our Fletcher acquisition went and want a piece of the pie...it's all gone though.
