Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
The Redskins have tendered a contract to exclusive rights free agent Shaun Suisham, meaning that the strong-legged kicker will remain with the team next season.

Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
I wished we had gone after Josh Brown. This guy seems to make clutch field goals at will. I guess we are comfortable with him.
|
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
Brown got a pretty big contract... not sure I'd want that much money tied up in that position.
|
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
Suisham is a decent kicker. He isn't a top tier guy because his leg isn't huge but he is accurate. I'd say he is a top 15 kicker and I thnk paying a top 15 guy only pennies compared to a top 5 guy is a better value. The only time a kicker REALLY matters is when he can't make anything or when he misses game winners.

Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
Brandon Coutu out of Georgia looks like the best kicker in the draft. I was watching him in the college skills competition on ESPN some time ago and he was nailing them from 57 with 10 yards to spare. I would love to see him become a redskin.

Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
Now if Suisham could just increase his kickoff range...
|
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
FYI, along with the blurb on Suisham, I saw that we did NOT tender a contract to Nemo. Looks like this could be the end of his tenure with us.

Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
I guess... but who out there is any better?
I say considering the musical chairs we've played with kickers over the years we should be happy to finally have a good kicker. |

Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
I'm not a fan of going with a rook and I really don't want to see us using a draft pick on one.
|
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
Fair enough, I just think he would be perfect competition. If he stays healthy he could really push Suisham and maybe take over kick off duties? I like Suisham enough, I just don't know if he is the future kicker...

Link: Redskins Retain Suisham
HAHAHA. Strong legged! That's funny. Suisham has been pretty good for us, so might as well keep him than return to the revolving door at kicker we've had in the past. Also, he had an 82.9% FG% last season, which is very good. His 82% over his short career ranks 10th all time. Hard to believe, but it's true. BTW, he has an 84.1% FG% with the Skins, which would rank 5th all time if he had only kicked for us. I am not thrilled that he can't hit from long range. His long was a 50 this past season, and he barely made it. We have all seen his short kickoffs too. However, I'll take an accurate kicker all day long with 5 yards less on his kicks than someone that can hit it from 65 and is all over the place. I would love to see us hire a big kicker to do JUST kickoffs though. They don't need to be accurate, just boom it. All in all, I like the idea of keeping him, and at only 26 years old, he is still plenty young enough to develope more strength. |
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
Since Frost is still a FA why don't we just find a punter who can also handle kick off duties in the draft or free agency. I remember we tried this with Frost and he sucked.

That statement is spot on. Guys cannot be catching the ball around the 7 yard line with a full head of steam. |
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
be careful when betting on a rookie kicker. coutu is the best this year, and if he's undrafted, we should try him out. don't waste a pick on a kicker if you don't need to though.
|
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
I like what frost has been doing 3 years ago i would say he was terrible but now he is a good punter and needs to be resigned.

Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
I definitely agree with not drafting a kicker. Look at Mike Nugent. The Jets used a second rounder on a supposed can't miss prospect and he has been nothing more than average.
I looked it up and of the top 10 kickers based on accuracy last season only two - Josh Scobee and Nick Kaeding - were kicking for the team that originally drafted them. Moreover, 6 of the 10 weren't drafted at all. When you come across a guy who can get the job done - like a Suisham - it's best to hold on to them, since kicker is a position that defies all reason. We haven't had consistency at the position since Chip Lohmiller so I think sticking with SEAN was the right thing to do. |

Haha, still longing for old Nick the kick. Good catch, I'll change it. |

Kickers are all about momentum, Suisham hasn't shown this yet but i am not to upset that we re-signed him.

So, for some reason, you are impressed with his bottom 5 or 10 leg power. Other that the 50 yarder "into the wind", why do you think he has a powerful leg? Did you miss the kickoffs that would wind up at the 10 yard line, and a couple that were close to the 15 yard line? Or how about the few that he had from 45-48 that barely made it over? Here's your chance to convince us he has a powerful leg, cause you are certainly in the minority. ps- keep in mind I said it was a good move, even gave stats to back it up. |

Matty, I know you took that line out of the article that you linked to. But you know what's funny is they've since changed the wording

Well, it was from your original post. I'm guessing then you do not think he has a powerful leg? Even though you were impressed by a 50 yard kick which I recall didn't seem to be into too much wind although the beginning of the game did have howling wind. |
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
I just copied and pasted the first paragraph of the article on Skins.com. They obviously have edited it now for whatever reason.
I wouldn't call his leg powerful but he's certainly got enough leg to get the job done. Check the highlights on the 50 yarder, the wind was pretty nasty and he drilled it. |
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
If were going to get another kicker at any point, I'd prefer to do it via free agency (I wouldnt have minded Josh Brown this year, idk if there was any interest on either end as he went to STL).
Suisham is an average kicker, nothing more, nothing less. He made a few big kicks for us this year (Miami, NYJ winners)...but in the end, that miss in Seattle will stick in my mind for a while and I dont exactly bleed confidence when he lines up...but at the same time, he's probaboly our best avalabile option, and I know I like him better than Novack or Hall. |

best kicker the skins have had since lohmiller in my view.

I agree. I loved Lohmiller, and was upset when he hung em up. He's got a way to go before being in Chip's catagory, but it shows you how bad our kickers have been over the past decade or so. |
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
does anyone remember the 30 yarder he missed in the Seahawks game? that was such a momentum killer!!! I think they are just scared they are going to miss out on a David Akers again like they did before...

I think we all do, but you can't judge an entire season on one kick. That image will take a while to get out of my head, but I am willing to give him another shot. If he sucks next year, then we will likely cut ties and move on. But who knows, that kick could have woke this kid up to become more determined to be special. |
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
People love to point out the miss, but he nailed his share of big kicks for us as well.
How about the week 1 game winner against the Dolphins? Or how about the 5 for 5 day against the Jets including the OT game winner? |

Now, let's get this thread back on track and start talking about Rock Cartwright. |
Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
I keep hearing the same thing on other forums about the kickoffs. It has been pointed out before that his hang time is much greater than most other kickers. Anything close to 4 seconds is excellent and his are consistently over 4 seconds. Look at Rackers - he line drives them 10 yards deep in the endsone yet most are returned. Why - no hang time and the coverage can't get down that fast. As well, look at the other kickers that Danny Smith has coached - he asks them to directional kick and sky kick against good return men. This definitely affects distance. It's ironic - Suisham was the kickoff specialist for Vandershank when he first went to Dallas. So is he capable of line driving it deeper - I would think so. It would lead me to believe that too much directional kicking is being asked of him and the room for error is much greater than just kicking the ball straight down the middle as far as you can. I looked at most of the games on NFL.com and went through the play-by-play. The opposing kicker had very similar kickoff distance as Suisham in the same playing conditions. You look at a guy like Janikowski - he only played one game in cold weather - Green Bay - and his kickoff distances were to the 3 and the 7 - and he has the most powerful leg in the League.

Re: Redskins Tender Contract to Suisham
This guy better get ready to be kicking a lot more extra points next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
