Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth

And the Browns got Stallworth (is it just me or are the Browns really active every year in the offseason?) Which means we're down to Javon Walker and Bryant Johnson in terms of free agents. While Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, and Larry Fitzgerald are all rather remote possibilities. |

Walker is a fa, it has to be at least somewhat tempting to vinny et al. |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian
I just wished we could go ahead and sign a wideout instead of drafting one (unless Malcolm Kelly or Limas Sweed fall to #21 or we trade for Chad Johnson. I mean Javon Walker would be hands down our best wideout if we sign him here. Walker or Hackett since both have played in the west coast offense that Zorn is implementing here. Snyder, come on I know that your mouth is getting watery for some action in this free agent frenzy. Let just get our wideout and then we can relax until draft day.

Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian
I'm positive they're interested in Walker.

Stallworth gone too!!

Although terms of the deal have not been reported, Stallworth was said to be seeking a deal that would pay about $5 million a year, with about $10 million in guaranteed money. Stallworth became an unrestricted free agent when he was released by the New England Patriots just before a hefty roster bonus came due. For the Browns, the addition of Stallworth should make their passing attack even more potent. Quarterback Derek Anderson had a good first season as the team's starter in 2007, and shortly after locking Anderson up for three more years, the Browns have now given him another weapon. Cleveland has been one of the more active teams in the early days of the new league year, and Browns fans had better hope the team made the right calls on their veteran contracts. ESPN - Source: NFC East teams among those showing interest in Walker - NFL
according to this, a no. of teams are interested in Walker, doesn't mention the skins. One of the post's articles last week said that the Skins didn't like him too much. I thought he might be a relative bargain, but if TB & SF are involved they will outspend us. |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian
My bad, the article said "all four nfc east teams" so the Skins have been in touch w/his agent if these sources are right.

Also looks like the Bills might take a run at Bryant. |

I think the Bears might too (btw, I merged the Stallworth thread into this one) |

What happened to Hackett?

nothing yet |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
Wow, Derek Anderson now has Stallworth, Edwards, and Winslow to throw to. That offense could really be something. The AFC North has 3 excellent offenses in Pitt, Cincy, and Cleveland.

Not to mention Jurevicius. Plus Thomas and Steinbach anchoring the blindside. Rogers and Williams clogging the middle on D. Crennel better win in 2008, or he'll probably be out of a job |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
So its either Javon Walker or DJ Hackett?
|

I think with Berrian choosing the Vikings over the Titans, the Titans may now be strong suitors for Hackett |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
go browns... Let's see if they can produce now that they actually have talent
|
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
If we stick to our guns this off season when do we see the benefit of having more free agent money than anyone else. A few years back teams like the Titans and Bucs had to release a lot of their better players and now they have so much money under the cap. Does anyone know when this will take effect.

I'd put Clev's skills guys up against anyone's in the NFL. Not to mention they one of the best o-lines in football. If they can get Williams and Rogers to play up to their potential I'd say Clev. is a serious contender in the AFC. |

Very Skins-like... big names brought in, shuffling off draft picks - they don't have a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd rounder this year. |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
If we're taking somebody it should be Javon Walker.
|
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
all that cleveland are missing now is a true stud at the RB position. Let's face facts Jamal Lewis is no spring chicken anymore...
|
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
i'm not so hot on J Walker bec of the knee all last season.

I agree but you know how the Skin's luck is, it will actually work for the Brown's... |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
I think given the turn of events that went down in the coaching hire (the Zorn surprise), I wonder if the same thing happens with free agency...you know like the Skins getting Randy Moss or something like that.
I must say though...many people thought Randy Moss staying with the Patriots was a done deal...and now he's shopping around and it looks like less and less likely that he will stay in New England...it would be ridiculous not to think that the Redskins might be looking his way. I mean a few weeks ago DS and Vinny were considering Chad Johnson...now that Randy Moss is a true free agent, why wouldn't they consider him? |

Not a spring chicken, but still good for over 1300 yds last yr behind a good o-line. |

Yeah, Randy Moss should get in the neighborhood of $9-$10M a year, and he deserves it. Ya think NE got a steal giving up a 4th rounder for him last year and only paying him $3M to catch 23tds?? Sheesh. Just once I'd like one of our signings to work out to that extent. |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
Details on the Berrian contract per PFT: 6 years, $42M with $16M guaranteed. $42M for a guy who's never had more than 5tds in a season and never had 1,000 yds?? My god. I'll say it AGAIN- "best available" is a relative term people!! FA is just stooooopid this year. These signings are absurd.

Jamal has a few more good years left in him and I thought he should've got comeback player of the year. Plus he's one of my keepers in FF! |

I take a lot of that back, I thought that he was over 30 or much closer to 30. He is only 28. Anyhow, I guess my main point is that last year the browns gave up there 1st pick this year to get Quinn, when they should have gave up there 1st pick this year for Peterson... |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
With all these receivers going, I bet we'd have to get in a bidding war with the likes of Tampa Bay, Tennessee or Buffalo for D.J. Hackett now?
|
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
Dont forget about Javon Walker

If he really wanted to stay in New England, he would have signed already. I doubt that NE would pay up for him, since they have never paid up for any of their players, not even Tom Brady (who has taken the hometown discount and screwed everyone on that team), Adam Vinieteri (the reason they actually won all of those Superbowl), Deion Branch (on of the SB MVPs) and now Asante Samuel. Plus, if NE really wanted to keep him, they would have franchised him, and brainwash him into playing with the tag. |

Tampa Bay looks like a main player to me in the Hacket Sweepstakes. Not only do they run a West Coast Offense but they might have more cap room then any team in the league. I remember on Thursday Adam Scheftner reported that they were going to have to spend $X to reach the salary cap floor. Also according to reports TB isn't happy with their WR crop. |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
what the browns are doing will work, because (while the contracts are big) they aren't overpaying, and they're signing the right players.

I think they could go 11-5 this year. Then they could also go 5-11. Its all about momentum. |
Re: Vikings Sign WR Berrian; Browns Sign WR Stallworth
The thing with Stallworth is that 2 teams have now basically given up on him (the Eagles and Pats). He's young and has shown flashes of ability but there is a reason these teams have let him go without any fight whatsoever. Obviously, it remains to be seen if he can put it all together but I don't think this is a huge upgrade to their offense.

So true. The Browns and the 49ers seem to be very impressed with our past FA strategies. |
