Steelers' QB Gets New Contract

ESPN - Roethlisberger gets more than $36 million in guarantees in new deal - NFL

The Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger have agreed to a new eight-year, $102 million contract, according to sources.

Wow... the Steelers paying out big money?!

This is the first time I remember the Steelers ever paying a player big $ but this is a top flight QB and those are hard to come by. Its a great deal for the Steelers.

Yeah, Big ben is still young and he's got a frickin cannon. That's a good move, he could be their QB for the next 10-12 years.

Goodness gracious he's gettin payed lol. But at least the Steelers have him locked up long term now and he's got financial security.

Re: Steelers' QB Gets New Contract

Is he even a top 5 QB? I mean the money he is getting paid is beyond insane and it's from the Steelers to boot. Is it the bizarro off-season? Since when do we sit on our hands and the Steelers shell out close to 40mil guaranteed to someone who isn't the best player at his position...or close to it?

Re: Steelers' QB Gets New Contract

Honestly, not worth the money. I'm not sold that Big Ben is a special QB in this league. He's good, but he's not worth that contract.

HE is younger than most, and I think he already has a ring.

Correct me if I an wrong, but he was the youngest QB to make it to a superbowl(tied with Marino) and win it all.

Worth every penny.

Is he really worth all the money? I bet he can't ride motorcycles without a helmet in the contract.

It sounds like a ton of $$ but remember the only thing that really matters is the guaranteed money.

This is the going rate of a franchise QB these days, and while Campbell probably won't command as much money as Roethlisberger in 2009, we are going to have to pay him like a franchise QB.

Big Ben is a game manager, nothing more. Do you really feel as if many other qb's couldn't have played well enough to win that Super Bowl for Pittsburgh. We'll see what Big Ben is made of, it looks like Tomlins system is putting more on his back.

Matty -- he got 30M guaranteed. That's a solid number. Figure he'll also play at least 4 years on that contract, so he's getting big time money.

No way will Campbell get close to that kind of money. This is his what, 4th season coming up and he barely has double digit wins. To say that JC can get paid anywhere near what a Super Bowl winning QB gets paid is insane.

That's right, he is a game manager and a pretty good one. Contrary to pooular belief all a QB really needs to do to be very successful is be a game manager. He does not need to win games, he just cant do stupid things to lose them.

I agree Irish, game managers are necessary. However, he's looking at Manning, Brady, etc money, and in my opinion, he doesn't deserve it.

I think at this point BR is more than just a game manager. He put up some gaudy numbers last year.

32 TDs vs 11 INTs.
3,154 yards
104.1 QB rating.
65.3 completion %.

Many of those passes and TDs came down big towards the end of the season after Willie went down and they had no running attack. Not to take anything away from him just think his best days are behind him.

Roethlisberger's QB rating is certainly inflated by the fact that he threw a very high percentage of the team's total TD's, but he's 26, and is due to continue improving.

I'm not 100% sure I agree that Romo is necessarily better. I think his receivers are far superior, but I don't know that he's better. Outside of the season after the accident, when Big Ben was hurt, he's shown me more than Romo. I think Romo is a very, very good player and he is a more special player, he makes a lot more mistakes than I would want. As many of you know, I live with a Boys fan, so I saw a lot of his games, I think Romo is very good, but I believe that Big Ben is a better all around passer.

So their RB goes down and teams now know he has to throw the ball and he racks up allot of big numbers. Are you sure your argument is that he is not very good because your point makes his stats look even better.

The game that Parker went down Roethlisberger was 16/20 for 261 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs. He didn't play in week 17.

In their playoff loss to Jax he was 29/42 for 337 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT.

I don't think we have enough of a sample to say whether losing Parker hurt him or not.

Re: Steelers' QB Gets New Contract

To me personally that motorcycle accident really messed up Big Ben. He did have a bounce back year last season and is only 26.

He's a very big guy and takes allot of hits and wear and tear throughout the NFL year. Then add the major injury he had on the bike and I don't see him worth all that money spread out over 8 years.

So the Steelers think he'll be starting for them at 34? Nope, they'll cut him before he turns 30! MMW's!!!!

Mark MY Words

Guy right there in the biggest game of the year and Superbowl experience he throws 3 picks and goes down to Jacksonville AGAIN?!!

So what do the Steelers do? 8 years $102million, if you're the head coach you're shitting in your pants b/c I think that's a clear statement on who they think the problem is and it aint BIG BEN.

Big, Strong and really hard to bring down.....Oh yeah, and he can throw the ball. It's a big contact, but I think he's worth it.

Re: Steelers' QB Gets New Contract

I am unsure as to why there are so many people speaking poorly of Big Ben. When he first came out, I thought he was overrated, but this year, he really showed me a lot.
In case some of you guys have missed it, he threw for 32 tds (rushed for 2) and had only 11 int's. He also had a 65.3% completion percentage, and not to mention he already has a super bowl ring. The Steelers were smart to get this guy locked up for 8 years.

Re: Steelers' QB Gets New Contract

FYI- Ben vs the elite teams in the league last year:
Dallas, 193 yards, 2 tds, 0 int.
N.E., 196 yards, 2 tds, 0 int.
Jax, 221 yards, 2 tds, 0 int.

not bad.

Re: Steelers' QB Gets New Contract

If Ben isn't a top 5 qb in this league who is ahead of him? He is coming off a season in which, I believe, he was the second highest rated passer in the league, second only to the most prolific season in NFL history. There are guys who are close like Hasselbeck perhaps, but an argument placing Ben in the top 3-5 qb's is very plausible.

I think with Ben people exhibit a knee-jerk reaction to a guy they believe to be a game manager without really taking a step back to examine the poor level of quarterback play in the league right now, and how much better the big guy is than most of the competition. To the doubters, go through each NFL team and look at their quarterback situation, then see if you still feel Ben is not worth top 3 money.
