Halas Award
 

Dave Elfin says the entire Skins team has been nominated for the [URL="http://video1.washingtontimes.com/redskins/2008/04/the_redskins_are_nominated_dav.html"]Halas Award[/URL] for the manner in which the organization overcame Sean Taylor's murder.

You can call me out, but I've got to go with Kevin Everett on this one.

I'm going to call out the fact that RedZone is a reference to an Arizona Cardinals stadium seating section that is right by the endzone.

Are you a Cardinals fan?

Getting back to the main point of this thread, i beleive Everett is walking now. It was a devistating and unfortunate injury yes, but Sean was imo our best player. When his news came to us it was out of nowhere. Everyone for days had no idea what really happened because we couldnt see. Everett was injured on the field during a game, Taylor was shot and killed at his home. I dont really think the two are even on the same page together.

This is difficult. I swear if anyone other than Everett, or the Redskins don't win this award I'm going to be severly pissed. I'm just worried that the writers will be on the nuts of the SB champs. Please, prove us wrong.

Not to diminish Taylor's death, or the shock and loss felt by the Redskins team, but I simply cannot imagine what it would be like to have such a life-changing event -- to be so severely injury that I'm paralyzed. Yes, Everett is walking now, which is a great testimony to his courage and resolve to overcome his problem. But his life has changed radically, and forever.

Another thought: Everett had to deal with his injury basically alone. The Skins, at least, had each other's support.

Both the Skins and Everett are deserving, and both have shown unusual character, but Everett's response to such a significant physical injury is really amazing.

Thats ridiculous redzone. I'm sure if sean taylor could choose living life paralyzed or death he would choose being paralyzed. Everett actually could play football again in time.. sean taylor wont even be able to watch his daughter grow. And everett had his whole team and his family to support him he wasnt in it alone. Sean Taylor is dead, left behind a wife a daughter, he was the best player on our team and your trying to say kevin everett is more deserving of the award? Sorry but thats a dumb post dude, there's no comparison between the two

I'm not comparing Tayor's death to Everett's injury. I'm comparing the Redskins team's response to ST's murder to Everett's response to being paralyzed. That's the premise of the award.

Basically, it comes down to dealing with the death of a teammate vs. dealing with a serious physical injury. I've overcome the unexpected death of someone close to me. I don't know if I'd be as able as Everett to overcome that type of injury.

To be a little more serious this time around, I don't think there's any way the Redskins or Everett don't win this award. I mean the award is for courage and perseverence in overcoming obstacles, really what unimaginable obstacles did the Giants have to overcome? I do think winning 11 on the road, winning the SB coming from a wildcard are obstacles that they overcome, but they don't really compare to trying to make the playoffs right after a beloved teammate dies unexpectedly or taking a severe hit and facing the prospect of being paralyzed for life but overcoming that. I'll just say this, if Everett or the Redskins win this award, both will have deserved it because both had tremendous courage and perseverence when dealing with their respective situations.

But most people who go through an injury like that arent thinking about the consequences of the injury.. most of them are thankful to be alive. Football is secondary to life you kno wha tim saying?

I agree that it should go to Everett. However...

Kevin Everett was surrounded by very talented doctors, nurses, therpists, and specialists who have helped him toward recovery. He received round the clock medical care, and had no burdens placed on him save his own health.

The Redskins played 5 days later. And then 4 days after that. They had funerals, tributes, interviews, and their own grief to overcome, all while continuing to prepare for and play games at the highest level. That's kind of a big deal.

I mean if Everett wins it, I really have no problem with that at all..Otherwise it has to be the Redskins, and I think that would be a tremendous accomplishment.

It doesn't seem that the award is limited just to players. According to news accounts, the Halas award goes annually to the "individual in the NFL who overcame the most adversity to succeed last season."

If you read that literally, the award historically goes to a person rather that a team. So ... the Redskins are re-writing history just by being nominated. Good for them.
