Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
Another issue I really don't care about either way so let's vote, majority wins.
|
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I think they should count only in the off-season like February to August but September to Janurary they should not count.
|
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I vote yes. And if the majority says no I think existing post counts should be grandfathered.

Hey, I thought I was a Pro Bowler before. What happened?
|
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
Sorry guys it's either yes or no. I'm not going to turn it on or off depending on the time of the year and play that game.

oh ok i vote yes i thought that is what the other guy thought |
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
i see no reason why they should count. It is side conversation. I would think it is pretty clear cut.
|
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I don't care, but I really wonder why some people DO care?
|
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
Rep points and post counts mean so little that starting a poll and a thread is already expending way too much energy on the subject. I'd just leave it and if people whine, turn a deaf ear.
|
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
Why even display them then? Actually, why DO we display them? They are truly not necessary. Everybody knows who the "key" contributors are, with the exception of n00bs.
edit- Ha, I broke the tie! |
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I vote yes. Why should some posts count and not others? Because of WHERE they were posted?
I say either totally erase post counts all together OR make them all count everywhere. I like what Quake said too. Having Parking lot posts only count in the offseason would be nice, but it may just be another unneeded headache. |
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I vote yes too. Like people have said, some people make ridiculously stupid posts in the Redskins forum and it gets added to their post count. But in the Parking Lot, we have a pretty even mix of not too serious threads and threads that really contribute to the site, where we learn other members' opinions on real world issues and things of that nature.
I think if you are going to take post counts away in the Parking Lot, then why not take post counts away period? The members of this site that all contribute or know one another pretty much form their opinion of other members of the site, so post count shouldn't really matter. Some of the newbies that come on this site get intimated by members that have been here for 3+ years and have thousands of posts, but if post count wasn't revealed next to the post there wouldn't be a problem. Seeing as how we all pretty much know one another, should post count really matter? A possible solution would be to hide the post count next to a person's post, but have it viewable if you click on a person's profile. That way the only way to see a person's PC is if you really wanted to. Why not make posts count, but not viewable. Post count shouldn't really be that big of a deal. In my opinion the best solution would be either A. Make all posts count, but have a person's post count not viewable on their mini-profile, or B. Just take away the post count period. |

We did that last year. Matty just never fixed the code after changing templates or something. http://www.redskinswarpath.com/playbook/16734-suggestion-post-counts.html?highlight=post+count |
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I voted yes, but only b/c the coin I flipped came up heads.
Post counts, rep points, all are nice and serve a limited purpose. The key to post counts is that the purpose is limited and is aimed more at those unfamiliar with the board. While I agree with Schneed and LadyBrave that post counts are pretty meaningless as to the actual value of the poster, I have a tendency to remenisce when I hit a milestone, and I imagine a few others do too. It's not so much that the count is important, it's just a reminder of the time I have been here. For different people this will occur at different times. I remember joking with Earthquake that he would hit 4000 before I hit 2000 (he did :) ). I did a "1999" milestone, half in jest half just to say "I love you guys". So whatever happens with post counts is fine. Are they useful? To a degree, is including parking lot posts consistent with the original post count purpose? probably. After anyone has been here more than a few months will it matter? No. And I ask again - Is the offseason over yet? |
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I guess on some reflection I do think post counts mean something on a board like this. They help new members know that this is an established board and probably wont tolerate a bunch of crap. I think it can help the new members understand that there are people here who care about the content on this board and not a bunch of short timers just spouting off.

Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
When you guys go to other message boards, do you pay attention to the post counts?

Sometimes... If they have a really low number, I might give them the benefit of the doubt that they're just getting their feet wet and aren't experienced in the message board culture. Sometimes I wish we'd be more constructive in our criticisms when addressing the noobs. On the other hand, sometimes I think the more posts you have just means you're more jaded. :) In all honestly, I look at the age of a poster first. I know, I know... that's stupid, but I just can't help it. |

Thats a simple one for me SS, prior to the path I had never been to one of these boards. Since joining and looking at Redskin.com frequently. I joined that and might have 5 posts if that. And I no more paid any attention to that then the man on the moon.......but I've only looked and posted a handful of times on extreme, just don't have the time in the day to sit in front of the computer for hours on end. So at the end of the day the post count just doesn't mean much of anything to myself. Whats in the post is a different story. |
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I think only posts with more than 500 words and a Flesch-Kincaid score of under 30 should count. Matty - can you set that up?
|
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
Yes! I got it! Parking lot post will count on mondays and saturdays, double on the days after a win.
But in all honesty I'm leaning towards no. |

This is the only message board I "do". |

Kind of. This is the only message board that I have more then 500 post. In fact, this is probably the only message board where I have over 250 post. It's not as big a deal though for me anymore though. Especially since the next bench mark for me is post 5,000 and it took me around 2 years to get to a 1,000 in the first place. Of course at this point I'm almost at 2,000 so mabe 5,000 will come sooner rather then later, but I'm at a point where enough people know me around here that my post count doesn't really matter anymore. |

Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
No, because of a certain thread that was started last season that had eveyone bitching about the friggin post count in the first place. People care more about that post count than they let on. It's fine the way it is now. If it isn't broke then don't fix it. I agree with Schneed, we have wasted way too much time on this topic already.

Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
I'm a member of a lot of message boards, and when I go there usually I look at the post counts because it gives me somewhat of a sense of what board members are usually the top dogs there. Once you get to know them though post counts don't matter. I'm sure when outsiders come here they probably look at post counts just to get a sense of how long the board has been running and who the older more respected members of the board are though.
I'm sure if outsiders came here and didn't see the post count they wouldn't feel like such an outsider, they'd just get a sense that it's a board with a lot of members and post counts don't really matter. |

It's more so about if I'm an outsider and I see some POS post here, do I look at the post count of the person and then say "well this person doesn't have that many posts so this is not necessarily typical of what I'll find on this site" |
Re: Should posts in the parking lot count towards total post counts?
Well if I was new to a message board and that sort of thing happened, I'd just chalk it up to the fact that all boards have members who contribute, and then other members who are a-holes that make stupid posts all the time. I can't say that's how everyone would perceive that situation though, although most people with common sense probably would. If the majority of the board was a breeding ground for stupidity (such as an Eagles message board. I kid, I kid) and it seems like there isn't anybody there that doesn't make ridiculously stupid posts I'd probably leave that board though.
