Official UDFA Signing Thread
First signing is some help for the offensive line
Kerry Brown - OG - Appalachian State Video Will post a link once I see one EDIT: BELOW IS AN OFFICIAL ARTICE AND LIST (THANKS STUCK IN TX) Redskins to Sign 13 Undrafted Rookies By Gary Fitzgerald Redskins.com April 28, 2008 Redskins Add 13 Undrafted Rookies The Redskins have agreed to contract terms with 13 undrafted rookie free agents, the team announced on Monday. The group of Redskins prospects includes four offensive linemen, two defensive ends and a quarterback. They join 10 rookies the team drafted in the NFL Draft on Saturday and Sunday. Here is the complete list: REDSKINS 2008 UNDRAFTED ROOKIES Player Position College Shannon Boatman OL Florida State Kerry Brown OL Appalachian State Devin Clark OL New Mexico Kyle DeVan OL Oregon State Alonzo Dotson DE Oklahoma Horace Gant WR St. Olaf College Curtis Gatewood LB Vanderbilt Bret Meyer QB Iowa State Kevin Mitchell S Illinois Matteral Richardson CB Arkansas Justin Scott S Purdue Dorian Smith DE Oregon State Bryan Wilson LB Morgan State Shannon Boatman is a 6-5, 315-pound offensive right tackle. He also played some guard for Florida State, so he has some versatility. He started two years and is thought to be a good developmental prospect. Boatman was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 17, but he has been able to keep the disease in check. Offensive lineman Kerry Brown is a 6-5, 305-pound guard from Appalachian State. He started four years and was a Division I-AA All-American. He is regarded as a tough, physical lineman who needs to fine-tune his technique. Devin Clark is a 6-3, 305-pound offensive right tackle from New Mexico. He is expected to move inside to guard at the pro level, though. He participated in national Olympic-style weightlifting competitions, so he is a strong, stout player. He may have been bypassed in the draft due to recent ankle surgery. Kyle DeVan played mostly center at Oregon State. He was a three-year starter and registered 232 knock-down blocks overall. He stands at 6-2 and 300 pounds. Defensive end Alonzo Dotson is 6-4 and 260 pounds. He played in 14 games with Redskins second round draft pick Malcolm Kelly last year and recorded 20 tackles and two sacks. His father Santana played for the Green Bay Packers in the 1990s and his grandfather Alphonse played for John Madden's Oakland Raiders in the 1970s. Horace Gant is a 6-3, 218-pound wide receiver who holds St. Olaf school records for receptions with 185, receiving yards with 3,061 and touchdowns with 27. Gant was coached by new Redskins offensive assistant Chris Meidt, who held the head coaching position at St. Olaf last year. Curtis Gatewood is a 6-2, 248-pound outside linebacker who will likely play either the strong-side or defensive end in the pros. A four-year starter at Vanderbilt, he recorded 110 tackles, 10.5 sacks and one interception in his college career. Quarterback Bret Meyer joins the Redskins as one of five QBs on the off-season roster. He is expected to compete with rookie draft pick Colt Brennan and first-year player Sam Hollenbach for a backup job. He completed 233-of-382 passes for nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions as a senior at Iowa State. Safety Kevin Mitchell is a 6-0, 209-pounder who led the Big Ten in passes defended last year. He was tied for third in the Big Ten with five interceptions. He also logged 75 tackles and 11 pass deflections. Mitchell is not related to the late Redskins linebacker Kevin Mitchell. Matteral Richardson is 5-11, 194 pounds and regarded as physical cornerback and sound tackler. He started three years at Arkansas, finishing with 180 tackles, 27 pass break-ups and four interceptions. Nicknamed "Red," he should compete for a special teams job early on. Safety Justin Scott was a two-year starter at Purdue. Last year, the 6-0, 209-pounder recorded 73 tackles, one sack and three interceptions. Defensive end Dorian Smith played two years at Oregon State as a junior college transfer, but started just one season. The 6-1, 264-pounder recorded 72 tackles, 22 tackles for a loss and 15 sacks. Bryan Wilson is a 6-3, 250-pound outside linebacker who earned 2007 All-MEAC first-team defense honors. He logged 50 tackles, a team-high seven sacks and a league-high six forced fumbles. Wilson hails from Temple Hills, Md. He attended the Redskins' local college workout. |
Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
I really really hope we could sign some guys like Erin Henderson from Maryland, Marcus Dixon from Hampton, maybe give a tryout to Vince Hall from Virginia Tech but that last one is just me lolol, I want to see him make a roster. I'd like to also see if we could get Ali Highsmith or Jamie Silva from LSU, Mike Mayock was making a case for Highsmith on NFLN today and he doesn't look like such a bad pick. There's a lot of UDFA's out there so we should get crackin before the other teams snap them up.

Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
Also from UMD Andrew Crummey, the O-lineman
|
Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
Did any of that list of approx 20 players localy get picked or are we going to bring any back for camp?
|
Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
I'm a Hokie. Vince Hall was unstoppable in the three years I've been here. Granted, the ACC isn't the NFL but he's a smart LB and a hell of a ballhawk.

what are you saying....you hope they sign him or did they sign him? |
Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
I couln't see waisting a pick on Dixon with his past but since he was not drafted then I could see us bringing him in because we would not be waisting a valueable pick if he can't keep his crap together.

Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
I hope they look at Keon Lattimore and Erin Henderson and Dixon from Hampton
|
Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
I hope Dixon and Henderson are in this group.
From JLC: Final Odds And Ends The Skins have agreed to terms with 13 undrafted free agents, Cerrato said, and the team will announce that after the players are officially signed - they agreed with 4 OL, 2 DL, 1 CB, 1 QB, 1 WR, 2 S, 2 LBs. Zorn said he has yet to meet some players - Shawn Springs and LaRon Landry are among those who have not been around - and that the players will wear names on theri backs at mini camp to help the coaches stay on top of things. Carlos Rogers, Colt Brennan and Rocky McIntosh are players who will not be able to particualte fully in the mini camp, Zorn said. The only people in the Redskins war room with regularity through the draft were Cerrato, Snyder, Zorn, and Scott Campbell, with scout Shemy Schembechler working the phones. Rinehart, the OL the Skins took, will definitely take snaps at center and could be a backup there in time, though he did not play there in college, Zorn and Cerrato said. That is an area of need. Cerrato said all three times the Redskins traded back they still ended up getting the exact player they had originally earmarked. So if these guys don't pan out for any reason, it won't be because the Skins got stuck taking players they didn't value. LSU DT Glenn Dorsey was the top player on Washington's overall board, Cerrato said. |
Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
I am really suprised they only got 1 CB....and that was an UFA...start healing up Carlos!
LB's can be gotten as UFA...only 2 is suprising 5 new Oline is a lot... 2 drafted safty's and 2 UFA....thats not good for Reed...though I'm sure UFA saftys have serious size/speed problems |

Might be worth watching the Outside the Lines on the kid before you go around impugning his character all over the place. This is all I know of the kid, but it sure sounds like an unfair prosecution to me ... girls father found out, she came up with a story, the prosecution nailed him with an indictment that carried a 10-year min. sentence so they can say they are tough on crime and, of course, the racial implications are right out of the 1890s. I hope he gets a shot someplace ... Outside The Lines: Marcus Dixon - ESPN Video |

man they are really high on him in that video, looks like he could be a really good player, wonder why he wasnt drafted. Strengths: Has excellent size and a huge frame...Real tough and physical...Plays with a nasty demeanor and has a killer instinct...Very strong and powerful..Is relatively athletic with good mobility..Quick and agile...Stout at the point of attack...Can pull and get to the second level...Has a great motor...Nice awareness....Has lots of experience. Weaknesses: Didn't play against a lot of premier competiton...Will lose his balance...Can be too aggressive at times...Not necessarily a dominant drive blocker...Is a step slow off the snap...Struggles to recover when beaten...Seemed to get bored on occasions. Notes: Four-year starter...Was a two-time Division I-AA All-American..Father Bruce played basketball at Georgia Tech...Sister Kristy was a basketball standout at Stetson...A great small school prospect who has the physical tools along with the intangibles you look for in an offensive lineman..Very underrated who somehow didn't receive an invitation to the '08 Scouting Combine....Showed real well at the Texas vs. The Nation game..Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he wound up starting in the NFL. |

I wouldn't have minded us signing him, but I know that he had trouble in the past and turned it around, but you never know when he might turn back into a troublemaker, or he could have just been acting good until the draft, hoping someone would take a chance on him. |

All I meant was why waist a draft pick on someone who might be in trouble with the law frequently? I would welcome him if he has his "itshay" straight and makes the team. She may have come up with the story but in the "Pro Football Weekly Pro Prospects Preview" it says he was found guilty by jury of molestation, and statutory rape. He was sentenced to 10yrs on the molestation charge. A Supreme Court overturned the charge because it was proven it was consentual but he still got a yr jail sentence for a lesser offense but had already done a yr prior to the proceedings so they gave him time served. Unless I missed something. He's a criminal. Character police won't like him. Sorry. I wonder if he has to register with the state for his offense due to it being a sex crime? |

Read this story about him, all he did was have consensual sex with a girl 3 years younger than him and they convicted him for it. I would not label him as a troublemaker for that. Unless you think race and class don't have any effect in the criminal justice system. He's a good fit in a 3-4, so the Cowboys are probably a good landing spot for him, but we'll see. |

Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
Also young men who are 18 or older and have girlfriends who are under 18 need to realize they are at the mearcy of the parents of the juvenile if what ever they are doing is not approved of by the parents. Which will catch you a contributing charge. Now throw in the fact she was 3yrs younger and you have Dixon. Prime example to other young men.

Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
I don't think they charged him with any race charges or her? I believe he broke the law and maybe the parents used the law to their advantage but he still broke the law. I hope when you have a daughter some 18 yr old who's in college is not trying give your daughter the sausage. especially if she is only 15. There is a big difference in maturity.
I also hope you don't pass this off as no big deal when you are having to hire a lawer for your sons defense if he should be doing the same thing. I'm sure the Judicial system would love parents who think this is no big deal. |

I made up my mind according to VA law. Sorry. LOL I went back to read the story and fell out laughing. I'm sure there are some race issues in that town and all the people need to stop wearing the white sheets but please. I couldn't finish it after I read that he pulled out his junk in class. Prank or not level headed young men don't do that and he was in high school. He knew better. Then it goes on to mention the inappropriate touching of a 14yr old. after track practice. Both got him suspended. Lets not be niave here and right him off as an angle. He's a perve. no big deal right. If he was white he wouldn't have gotten into trouble...right. I can see you have made up your mind. so lets move on. |
Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
Oh and I'm sure a criminal would not twist the story to make him look better either. Did they even talk to the police or parents of the girl to get both sides of the story? Since I couldn't finish it.

I can see how you think inappropriate touching of a 14 year old girl is a crime, but they were making out. And that case should've ended with the fact that it was consensual sex. You're acting like you can't see things from his point of view. Did you not have sex with anyone younger than you when you were a teenager? Did you not make out with girls for fear of getting arrested for inappropriate touching? |
Re: Official UDFA Signing Thread
Character is moving rapidly from a general concern for keeping a bad apple off your team, to an accepted reason for drafting poorly.
It's kind of sickening. You want to keep the bad guys off your team, but the NFL is about a half step from becoming a witch hunt. |

I'll bite. I've got to concur with SC Skins Fan. Perve or not, he didn't deserve ANY jail time. I'm not sure what Puritanical school you attended, but I know an awful lot of 15 year olds who dated 18 year olds and none of the 18 year olds should be in prison. Dumb law and dumbass judge. |
