Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Terrell Owens has been on his best behavior for quite awhile. The Dallas Cowboys are doing their best to keep it that way.
Both sides agreed Monday to a three-year contract extension worth around $27 million. Cowboys pony up three-year extension for T.O. - NFL - SI.com Woulda been nice to see him start complaining about not getting an extension. Cowboys fans are getting a little too much good news for my tastes, first Pacman and now this. |
Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
As much as I dislike Owens and the Boyz, this extension was well deserved IMO.

Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
Smart move by them, keep him quiet in what would've been a contract year.
Another way of looking at it though, is that he doesn't have the incentive to play for a new deal now.I think TO plays hard & will continue to do so, but he is still a volatile kid & can start to act like one at any moment. |

The big reason he's been such a good boy in Dallas the last two years was because almost all of his 3-year, $25 million deal was non-guaranteed. In other words, he had to be on the field and playing well for the Cowboys to think he was worth it. The cap hits were structured in such a way that if the Cowboys thought he was being a pain in the ass at all, they'd have no problem cutting him. He had to earn his money, and he likes money. So he earned it. I wonder how much bonus they gave him with this one. If it's similar in structure to the last deal, I'd figure he'll keep on behaving well. |

It doesn't include details about how the contract is structured, but based on the no.s provided it looks pretty front loaded (assuming that the 12.9 signing bonus is just that & not spread over the contract). If that's the case it's a far cry from his current deal which as you note is basically a series of 1 yr. deals to allow the boys to cut ties in any given year. A lot of details still to figure out, but overall it's good news for them. I still think that he's only good in good times. Once things get tough for them he'll be the first to let everyone know it's not his fault. If they have another year like last year, TO will be a continuing problem for us, but if their O starts to have some problems he could actually be an asset to us! |
Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
As good as he's played for them, it hasn't translated to dominance on the field. They've split their season series with us the past two years, and haven't won a playoff game.
He's inarguably one the the best five (I'd say two or three) receivers playing today. That doesn't necessarily make him integral to the team, though. |

There was a time constraint of sorts, that being Owens was due a 3 million dollar roster bonus on June 3rd. By signing the new deal that bonus went away. He got 12.9 in garaunteed money. His base salary is only 830,000. And actually by signing this deal, Owens SAVED Dallas 3 million dollars in cap space with the way the contract is structured. |

I hate TO & believe that he's a tantrum away from sending his team into a downward spiral, but I'd have to disagree that his play hasn't helped them become a dominant team. Yes, they lost in the playoffs but they happened to lose to the super bowl champs. They had the best record in the nfc & tied the franchise best. TO has been a big part of that & led the nfc in td's the last 2 years I believe. I hope he reverts to his philly/SF days in Dallas, but looking at it objectively I think Dallas is looking stronger than ever and their playoff loss should make them more determined this year. Let's hope for a TO renaissance where he can return to his old childish form. |
Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
Its a good move by the Boys. They have nothing to lose except any signing money if TO goes bust and they made him happy which will keep him somewhat under control. Its a win win.

TO is all about feeling wanted and important and Dallas makes him feel that way. I was watching some locker room footage of a Cowboys in on NFL Network and they always have TO address the team after a win. Now they have a big bowl of popcorn at his news conference yesterday. On top of all that TO seems to be getting better with age. 28tds over the last two years. |

Good move in the here and now. Needless to say though, the deal is heavily backloaded, which makes things rough should the dreaded final uncapped season come calling in 2010. I don't know enough about the Cowboys' overall salary cap picture to opine on the effects of backloading Owens' deal so heavily. I do know that they have handed out several huge contracts recently (Owens, Romo, Barber, Newman). I'll try to look into their cap situation. I want to see if they appear to be developing any final-uncapped-season contingencies. |

Yes! I was thinking the same thing, & LL has to be mad about that game in dallas. If he can have the same impact on TO that ST did, LL'd be earning some of his $ just by being there. |

T.O. will discover that there's no free reign over the middle just because #21 is no longer with us. Not only will Landry lay some wood on him, but T.O. will continue to have the drops against us just knowing that we have an enforcer back there.

I seem to remember Owens "dropping" 8 receptions for 173 yards and 4 TD's in the one game against Washington last November. |

I also remember that Sean Taylor wasn't playing. He could have made a big difference in that game. |

That was the one Taylor was injured for, just before his death. |

It's funny how many Cowboy fans forget the other games where he was a non factor. Just like everyone else said, Taylor was out and there wasn't a plan in place. Tell me that Moss wouldn't have dropped the same kind of yardage on a second string safety (hell, he did it against FIRST string Roy Williams, but I try not to harp on that ;)) |

You know we will always see "apples and oranges" on this subject. But as for those "other games" you mentioned from Owens first season with Dallas, that was the year that Owens played the entire season with a broken bone in his hand, and although he led the league in dropped balls, he still led the league in TD's too. He played hurt the whole season and had surgery in the off-season to fix that bone in his hand. In the same spirit though, we have all seen Santana Moss take himself out of games for one reason or another. And the only game Owens played last year against Washington was in November of last season, he did not play the second game due to a high ankle sprain. |

Can't remember his name though. It was some 3rd or 4th stringer. Not Ade Jimoh but.... It doesn't matter |
Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
Well my thought is this. Since joining Dallas, Owens has faced the Redskins 3 times. In those 3 games his combined numbers are 18 receptions, 268 yards and 5 TD's.
Those numbers are not outlandish, but I'll take'em |

I won't argue against his ability & his performance on the field when he's not crying & whining at his coaches or teamates. TO is still at the top of his game & I'll give credit to JJ et al for keeping him in check. He is still to me very easy to hate & hard to feel sorry for, especially when crying before a camera. And everyone has a weakness, his is going across the middle knowing he's going to get popped mercilessly. Landry will likely make some mistakes by being overly agressive, but he'll also pop TO enough to make him remember it. I'll have my popcorn ready for that! |

With Landry now at FS, he brings Taylor's physical brand of play back there. I look for TO to have drops facing Landry as he did nearly every game that he faced the prospect of getting layed out by #21.

Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
If taylor was that good, why did the skins have the record that they had before he got hurt? I guess he would have played qb and not have thrown an int if he would have played against dallas.

Since when is or 5-4 a losing record? JC Might not have needed to throw that pass that got intercecpted at the end of the game if Talor was healthy. TO would have never put up 4 TD's with Taylor there. You know what nevermind, we got something for TO this year. Just remember we won the last time our teams met. |
Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
Don't get me wrong, I have alot of respect for what ST accomplished in his short time, but I hear too many people use his absence as an excuse for a wr having a big day against the skins. Receivers get paid to perform too. What those people who make excuses need to do is complain about that weak pass rush the skins put up. As for me posting twice, that was a mistake.
|
Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
It's not an excuse. Missing our top defender that day was undoubtedly a factor in TO's big day. Going back to their matchups when TO was in Philly Taylor always stepped up and helped to shut him down.

T.O. avoids suspension. PFT.com
T.O. AVOIDS STEROIDS SUSPENSION Posted by Mike Florio on June 9, 2008, 4:23 p.m. Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens has been placed into a program of enhanced testing under the NFL’s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, who once railed about confidential drug-use information being made public when the scoop wasn’t his, Owens failed to timely respond to a phone call attempting to arrange random testing. Owens reportedly met with the league on the same day the team announced his three-year contract extension, and he offered a sufficiently “plausible” explanation for his failure to make himself available. Owens was not disciplined; instead, he can be randomly tested up to 24 times per year for performance-enhancing substances. The issue came up only two weeks ago, and Owens has since been tested once, and passed it. He has never tested positive for steroids or other performance-enhancing substances. The policy on anablic steroids and related substances has no grace period of fines. Instead, it calls for a four-game violation based on the first positive test. And the league’s desire to ensure that player’s show up for random tests is understandable. If a player has opted to use a banned substance in the hopes of not getting tested decides to pretend that he didn’t get a call to show up and deposit a cup of, um, fluid for examination, the effort to catch players who break the rules is seriously undermined. |

I hate the guy, but he's got no history of testing positive and there's no evidence here saying he's been using. He's just a physical freak of nature, good for him. |
Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
When I saw the news on ESPN - I knew someone would bring this up.. Just like Schneed said, I hate this guy! But I highly doubt TO took steroid or any illegal substances.. It's bound for some players sometimes to miss the appointment or forget to call back..

Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
I think the ESPN article said that Owens went to the NFL offices in New York on his own and took a test last week and was good to go.
The real issue seems that the NFL is tired of not having his correct phone information. |
Re: Cowboys Extend Terrell Owens
Not to change the topic all of a sudden but have you seen how many WR's we have and their size?
I looked at T.O. who is listed at 6-3 and 218. We have 10 WR's right now: 1. Horace Grant...6-3...218 2. Malcolm Kelly...6-3...219 3. Maurice Mann..6-1...190 4. Billy McMullen..6-4...215 5. Anthony Mix....6-5...235 (maybe more according to the Redskins) 6. Santana Moss..5-10.200 7. Randel El.........5-10.190 8. Devin Thomas...6-1..218 9. James Thrash...6-0..204 10. Burl Toler.......6-2..185 I know that Moss, Randel El, and Thrash are the only real vets on the team but if any of the others turn out to be decent we would have several with some height. Grant, Kelly, McMullen, Thomas, and Mix all have roughly the same size as T.O. Only if they can turn out to play like him..... Toler and Mann are a little light but are tall enough to be special also. |

Two viable BIG targets in the Red Zone for Campbell to go to. And if they stretch the short field, Portis under the coverage. That is kinda scary. |
