Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Redskins owner Dan Snyder reached a deal yesterday to buy three local AM radio stations from Clear Channel Communications, including the area's leading sports-talk station, WTEM.

Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
This probably means that any of the current radio hosts that have been critical of the Skins in the past (Czaban, B. Mitch, Al Koken) might be on very short leashes, and that's assuming that Snyder keeps them around.

Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Czaban is pretty popular. Hard to throw away ratings but I guess DS could if so inclined.

Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Gotta love Snyder as much as he loves money :)

He just doesn't want anyone blasting him. Otherwise why would he buy the station that rips him the most??? |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Either DS is gonna let them continue to bash the Skins because he knows they get good ratings, or he's gonna can their asses the second they talk bad about him. We'll see how it plays out. I'm just glad they acquired better stations, there were two cases last year where I had to listen to the games on the radio because they were night games and I had to work, and the signal sucked even though I was listening on 100.3.

He wants a stronger signal and these stations were up for sale. I think Koken stays, Mitchell's been hinting at leaving anyway, and Czaban is a complete ass who, in my opinion, should never be heard from again. |

I haven't heard of any talk of B Mitch leaving, wheres that coming from? And if so have you heard where he is planing on going or is he just hanging it up? |

Heard from some mutual friends that he's been having some conversations with a radio station in either NY or Philly. I don't remember which off the top of my head. |

Czaban just seems like such a dick. He doesn't play that down at all. But his show is pretty entertaining sometimes. |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Czaban is entertaining, but something tells me Snyder still hasn't forgotten when Czaban asked Brunell if he would step down and give Campbell the starting QB job in 2006

Czaban rules. |

Can't argue there. He's the king of the douchebags. |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Either you love Czaban or hate him, there seems to be no middle ground. I just hope that Andy Pollin, Doc, & Phil Wood are kept on the air.
|
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
I hope that Czaban doesn't go anywhere. While he does have a negative opinion at times of the Redskins, a lot of his criticisms are valid. It really gives Snyder the perfect opportunity to get rid of his competition and get a better signal all in one fell swoop. I wouldn't be surprised if you see JFK pick up some of those shows. It would be a good fit considering they have the Junkies and what not. They also have Jim Rome as well. I would hate to see Czaban leave because that would mean that there would be no one to give a descenting voice about the redskins and their management. I can't imagine that Czaban, Koken, and Bmitch will be there too much longer if all this stuff happens.

Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
I like Czaban and Mitchell, because they give an honest opinion to what they see. Sometimes fans don't like to hear the truth or a different opinion of what their team is really doing, so they call it bashing. I have a solution for those fans, listen to Larry Michael, he has plenty of that feel good KOOL-AID that some of those fans like to drink.

Guys that constantly bash the team get really old to listen to, just like guys that are always positive about the team get old real quick. There needs to be a happy medium, and with guys like Czabe and Mitchell there just doesn't seem to be any middle ground. |

Soooooo, when is DS going to buy the Warpath?:cool-smil |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
I have to agree with you Matty72 as far as Czabe is concern but I think with Mitchell, some of his negative comments are more directed towards his personal beef with Snyder apposed to the team itself.

Czaban was so anti-Redskins, that his possible exit would actually bring more balance to that station. |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
I'd like if they had guys on these new stations that bring that "medium" to the air. I can't stand Czaban because he never has anything positive to say and I can't stand Larry Michael because he thinks any move the Redskins do is like the best thing possible. The perfect example of that is that joke Bram played on him on Aprils' Fools Day, before that day Larry Michael was all "I don't want Chad Johnson on the Redskins" and then Bram told him that we traded for him and he immediately started talking bout how he loved the move and how the Redskins did the right thing. At least he's a self-admitted homer though, he's always said that's the biggest homer of the Redskins out there lolol.

The Riggins Show has been canceled. This is a pretty big deal to me, one of my weekday afternoon joys was listening to the show. I couldnt figure out what the hell was going on this week. The Sports Reporters officially suck. I have been waiting for over a year now for sirius and xm to merge, since my car came with a xm receiver. Dream scenario: Merger clears fcc approval, and Riggins gets picked up as a afternoon sports personality |

Don't hold out too much hope. Riggins has already been fired from Sirius once. He was one of the original hosts of the Afternoon Blitz. |

Especially when they are rooting for the same team. They are happy when the team does well, and they blast them when they suck. This is a valid reason to fire someone?
Maybe what everybody wants is a Larry Michael Total Access Network. Somebody who will sugarcoat everything and make listeners and smart football fans feel like everything is peachy, instead of a good straight forward honest outlook. |

Damn. I think Riggins probably demands a decent sized salary becuase half of his show was commericals, so i dont know if he would get picked up anywhere else. |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
I really like Steve Czabans morning show in Richmond (we don't get the local show he does). I'm not taking up for him as a person of which i have no idea about. As a show, it's pretty good. He tells it like it is and doesn't sugarcoat it. I think some skins fans get upset at SOME of his negativity. In case you didn't hear...i think his words were..he is giddy of the recent trade for Jason Taylor. He didn't have enough good things to say.
On his morning show he really doesn't talk too much skins so I can't vouch for the local one. Just to rehash a couple of his takes the last couple years... Mark Brunell is not getting it done Gibbs 2.0 is a play not to lose offense that's too conservative I think that those points were pretty accurate. Say what you want but he is a skins fan, he just tells it like he sees it. That's why they call it an opinion. |

Of course, if he were more inclined to research a point before he went off on it, it's possible he might have seen the 16 players or coaches on the 2006 Redskins more responsible for that mess than Mark Brunell, or the fallacy behind debating playcalling -- namely the sweeping generalization that "playing not to lose" actually entails. It's classic sports radio talk. There are multiple ways to win a ball game, and every one of them results in not losing the game. Technically, there are no standards for sports talk radio, it tends to be a fourm where wacky opinions are thrown out without any sort of fact checking or journalistic credibility. So people know what they are getting when they listen to sports talk on the radio, and generally the hosts know too. It's opinion. But when a host can't see that his opinion is no more important than anyone elses, then he's an asshole. Steve Czaban is an asshole. |

I seem to recall Czabe saying once that Gibbs chose Brunell over Ramsey because Gibbs and Brunell go to church together. Where was the profound truth in that?

I have not had the time to listen to the radio and I was shocked to see this happen. I had gotten use to Riggo and his crew, and I felt like they always talked Redskins. Which I know may turn off some people, but come on, this is a football town. I turned in to the Sports Reporter yesterday, and they were talking about freaking Baseball!!...Why? We have to perennial loser teams in baseball that are not going to go into the playoffs anytime soon. Ugh, I hope they get their act together and start talking Redskins. |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
I am fan of Czabe's show even though I know he's a donkey. At the end of the day the show is entertaining and much of his Skins points are somewhat valid. He also speaks as a fan of the team and I know a lot of people, misguided as they were, had the same suspicion about why Brunell played.

Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
I just hope ill be able to get some sort of signal up here in harrisburg. Nothing but Eagles and Steelers fans up here.

Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
To be honest with you I listen to his radio show, sometimes not a lot. But I have seen him on Redskins Postgame show and the guy comes across as a passionate fan IMO.
I think he is a good analyst of the game. He may be too straight forward or honest for some fans, but he seems genuine. You will never question how he feels. |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Well, the transition is basically complete- I listen to 980 (WTEM) on the way to the office in the AM, and I'm used to catching the tail end of Czaban and the beginning of Doc Walker... No more. Now it's stupid Man Girl and the Meat Ball (aka Mike and Mike- their shtich is so played out). And the annoying thing is ESPN radio is being simulcast on all 4 local channels Snyder owns. So lame. And my boy Al Galdi (graduated one year behind me at G'town Prep) doesn't seem to be around either. Sigh... Between Czaban's bashing and Doc's slurping, I HAD my happy medium. So much for good local radio.
|
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Al Galdi still does the updates and if Doc Walker was able to get Mike Bird back on I'm sure Galdi is not far behind.
|
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
Czaban is awesome, his morning nationally syndicated show is hilarious. He is a Redskins fan, but since when does being a fan mean that you have to praise the skins all day long and ignore the bonehead decisions they make. I dont know how you could be a skins fan over the last 14 years and not question alot of their decisions that they make. We pay a lot of money for tickets, merchandise, etc. we should expect a better product than we have gotten over the last 14 years.
|
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
You'd think that with four radios, they could have some type of local show in the morning in one of the stations and have mike & mike in the others. Freaking greeney is a baseball nut, so now during the season that's all he talks about, bleh.
I must take back my Sports Reporters comment from a few days ago tho', they were talking all Redskins yesterday afternoon. Still, I had gotten used to Riggo and his crew. |
Re: Snyder Expands Radio Empire
I'd like to see Riggo, Kevin and Gary back from 4-7pm instead of the Sports Reporters. Just my opinion, but I enjoyed listening to them more than these guys.
