Quick question. If you have Firefox 2 and d/l Firefox 3, did you have to reinstall all your add-ons, themes, etc.? If that's the case, I may wait a bit until I have time to reinstall all the stuff I hvae...

I'm a Linux user and I'm not sure what happens in Windows world. In Linux Firefox 3 picks up all your plugins from Firefox 2 upon first start up and ask you to update your plugins. Note that some plugins that work in Firefox 2 won't work on Firefox 3...when they eventually do FF3 wlll inform you and ask if you want to update them. Anywho, if I had to guess I would guess the Windows version operates similarly.

Sweet. Something to do this afternoon while I'm working on web mockups.

That's exactly what it does in Windows.

I'm using IE 7 lol. What is so much better about Firefox?

Re: Firefox 3 is out.

I think the reason I'm still using IE 7 is because I'm pretty content with it. I like the security features, and that whole feature about the address bar knowing where you want to go in Firefox isn't really that big for me because like 95% of the web pages I go to are bookmarked and organized on the left hand side of my screen, so I never have to type in a url unless i'm going to a site that I don't already have bookmarked.

Re: Firefox 3 is out.

yay! been using it since pre1.0, and it's great. 2.x got rid of TONS of memory leaks which was the only real compliant i ever had.

most of that article discuss stuff (like the awesome bar) that's been around a while.

and if you have old plugin you really need, you can hex edit their version numbers to match firefox (what i've been doing to session saver since 1.6) and most should work.

you can import bookmarks from ie into firefox. when you install it, it'll ask you if you want to.

firefox is faster, more secure and has better plugins (like adblock... i haven't seen a web ad in years, gmail manager, greasemonkey/platypus (custom scripts per site... like adding a "download as .mp4" link to every youtube video/page), session saver, etc). if you're happy with ie that's cool, and ie7 copied a lot of things from firefox (like tabbed browsing and such) which made it better, but most people who make the switch are pretty happy about it.

I might download it and try it out for a bit and see if I like it, we'll see. The only complaint I have about IE7 is that on some sites that always have popups, well IE7 will block like the first but then the second and the third ones come up on my screen. I like the custom scripts per site idea on Firefox as well, that's another reason I'll check it out.

custom scripts for a page (like moving frames or pieces around, etc) is done with the greasemonkey and platypus scripts... their websites should have a repository of scripts for specific sites in case you don't want to or don't know how to write your own (though there's help for that too, if you want it).

to stop pop ups/ads, adblock plus and adblock filterset.g updater... that'll automatically update and keep most things blocked, and you can use it to right click and adblock individual images/elements, or throw wildcards (like http://ad.* and http://ads.*) as needed

you should probably get IEView too, it just lets you right click and choose "View this page/link in Internet Explorer" in case you need it (sometimes adblock will block videos that try to load video ads before playing the real content, and if you don't want to go through and unblock them, it's quicker to just pop it into IE... it might just be overzealousness on my part that blocked them though)

I'd also suggest GooglePreview (shows a thumbnail of linked pages next to google results) and Gmail Manager (IF you use a gmail account... there's another plugin that'll let you use Gmail as an ftp/storage server too, but not that many people need to do that).

how do yo uchange the themes in firefox? I have download the plug in but I can't get the theme to change.

Tools->Addons->Themes Tab

Re: Firefox 3 is out.

I downloaded the new version yesterday afternoon, and I'm not a big fan of the new address bar. So much so, that I got the oldbar plugin. That's my only complaint. All my plugins except 2 had updates for Version 3, so I'm a pretty happy camper.

Adblock Plus is awesome. It pains me to look at stuff in IE laden with ads...

Funny - I love the new address bar. Does oldbar change the functionality (i.e., history+bookmark searching) or just the appearance?

BDBohnzie 06-20-2008 10:55 AM

Re: Firefox 3 is out.

I believe just the appearance. I think that was my problem with the change. FF2, the URLs never moved, so instead of using bookmarks, I used the location bar to hit my favorite sites.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227
Note that the underlying autocomplete algorithm is the Firefox 3 algorithm, not the Firefox 2 algorithm. oldbar only affects the presentation of the results.
Thanks! Sorry for being too lazy to search...

Re: Firefox 3 is out.

No worries. Figured if anyone else didn't like the new location bar, they had direct access to oldbar. ;)

The rendering speed is amazing. They really put firefox back into the speed competition.

Like Firefox 3 it's not fully ready for prime-time.

The sad thing is that "not being ready" doesn't prevent the powers that be from shoving it down our collective throats. That applies to everything (Vista included).

It's pretty close to holy sh*t speed. Killed some of my add-ons but they'll get fixed in short order I am guessing.

BDBohnzie 07-02-2009 12:02 PM

Re: Firefox 3 is out.

Yeah I have definitely noticed a change speed wise. It's rocking and rolling...I do have 3 addons that are broken, but the rest I'm using are solid.

I'm using it, and it won't let me access Hotmail. I know, I know, hotmail sucks, I just have the address linked to so many things that I don't feel like changing it. Any ideas on how to allow me to access hotmail using Firefox 3? I'm on a Mac and the same thing happens with Safari.

MTK 07-02-2009 01:38 PM

I use hotmail too and haven't had any issues with FF 3.5

I think it may have to do with my using a Mac Powerbook.
