Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
One of the best books I ever read, and with the Wire guys on board, the miniseries should be good as well.

Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
Do you think I should read this first or watch the series??????
|
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I'm probably gonna watch the series when it kicks off tomorrow night.
|
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
It looks like a promising show. Anyone else catch it?
|
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I watched it. IT was a little slow but they are building the story. I am going to re-watch it tonight during dinner. I was actually a little lost at times.
If you have HBO on-demand they have a whole bunch of videos on each charactor. |

I forgot to watch it but I recorded it. I'll probably watch it tonight.

How do you forget to watch something but remembered to record it? |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
Do it all the time! Set Tivo for a program on Wed to record for Sunday.
Then it is a pleasent surprise when I look in my Tivo inbox. |

I set up a schedule to record the whole series about a week ago |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I finally watched the first episode on demand and was very impressed. I think the show really captures the way these different personalities came together as a unit. The one thing that the book has, and I'm hoping the show goes into this more in later episodes, is the detailed back stories of the various characters. That's what I remembered the most from the book: the way characters from all walks of life were able to unite and thrive as a military unit and a fraternity.

Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
they, uh, really make those officers (the two captains) look like real A-holes...
it's much more accurate than over there. first episode was pretty good. |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
The Godfather looks and sounds like a badass.

Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I recorded it too and will watch it later tonight. I heard it's some good stuff. With some directors from The Wire involved it's sure to be good. Any fans of The Wire out there?
I believe the same Wire directors are also involved in a post New Orleans Katrina series on HBO coming soon. |

I then proceeded to get hooked on the final 5 or so episodes of season 5. Since it ended I have bought the first 4 seasons and I'm a little bit into the 4th season. It is hands down my favorite show of all time. I'm going to buy season 5 the day it comes out (I should be done with the other 4) and watch the hell outta that too. I honestly don't know what I'll do when I finish them (maybe start over) BTW, I just read about Felicia "Snoop" Pearson today...she wrote a book I'm going to have to buy. Suffice it to say, she used to basically be her character. |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war

Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
Last night's episode was a good one. Anyone catch it?
|
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I just saw the first episode last night, and I caught about the last 15 minutes of the next episode tonight, I plan on watching it next time i see it on HBO. I definitely like it, and yes I agree the Godfather is a badass. It's definitely different from the stuff they feed us in the regular media, it actually shows how the soldiers feel and how down to earth they actually are.

Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I watch the second one last night it was good! Much better then the first EPS. I like when he told the reporter to roll over because the when the tank rolls by it feels great on your dick. So funny!
The guy that drives the humve is the best character. |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
2nd was WAY better than the first, and i liked the 1st episode quite a bit anyways.
i like the extra 4 minutes of comms they throw in at the end for no good reason too. It's actually realistic comm talk. |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
Episode 2 was great. Much better than the first.
Does anyone know how many episodes there are going to be? |

Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
The show is pretty humorous as long as you know that it's a complete farce. A friend of mine in the Marine Corps got back from his second tour in Iraq and said the show is an absolute joke if it's attempting to portray reality over there.
According to him, "Generation Kill" has about as much to do with the real war as Star Wars has to do with legitimate space travel. |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I'm really disappointed, my dad cut off Cinemax and HBO from our DTV bill this month cuz he said he's tired of seeing the same old movies on there lol. No more Generation Kill for me, oh well.

Does he realize that the series is based on the book (which is non-fiction) and that some of the actors were the real Marines who invaded Iraq? |

Don't know. He was in Ramadi for months, so what does he know;-) Maybe he's making it all up. |

I do not have HBO and have not seen any of this but it is very common that even though it is based on a true story things get added and removed to add entertainment value. So while the story line itself may be true all the other stuff was added. |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
Of course it all depends on the individual's perspective. Obviously not everyone has the same experience over there, but from what I've read the series is a pretty accurate portrayal.

I wasn't calling your friend a liar. I was just noting that my buddy was in the 75th Ranger Regiment, which took part in the initial invasion of Iraq. Granted, that's an army unit, but he says GK is pretty true to life. As Matty pointed out, I think each soldier, marine and airman has a different experience. So, to one person the series might seem unrealistics and, to others, it might seem like a documentary. |
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I had a GK marathon over the weekend so I'm caught up except for the finale. Pretty good series overall. It does't touch Band of Brothers but that bar is set pretty high.
|
Re: 'Generation Kill' offers insider look at the Iraq war
I watched the finale last night. It was a pretty good series. It gives some insight on the tactics used and not used during the initial invasion, mentality of the RECON division and marines, and the overall intentions of the Commanding Officers. Now, how much is accurate i have no idea.
From an entertainment side, if you expecting some drama to unfold you are going to be disappointed (there are exciting moments, but this is not Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. If you want to see what is going on during the invasion then you'll be interested. I'm trying not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the last episode. |
