Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I think this is definitely good news as I always thought Reed deserves this.. I'm just glad that things will stay same..

Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I feel good about this too. Keeps consistency in the secondary, not broke dont fix. Didnt Cooly talk about in his blog how Reed would be the most improved player from last season. Basicly saying Reed is spending more time in the offseason then anyone else at Redskins park working out and stuff.

Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I don't know about you guys but not seeing #21 out there is still going to be very strange. I can't imagine how sick the secondary would be this year with #21 and Landry back there. But it's Reid's time now so I hope he can hold it down. He's got some big shoes to fill.
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
This was a no brainer IMO. Landry is the fastest safety in the league and he played great after the switch to FS last year.

Of course, it's still going to be strange.. Unfortunately, we have to move on because it's part of life.. Don't get me wrong, I miss Sean greatly; I always thought of him everyday.. I watch clips of him often.. However, in order to help D get better, we have to move on.. And in some ways, I'm kind of surprised that Reed have not proven you enough? I mean, last few games - Reed played well (IMO).. However, not that great but good enough to help the defense hold the O down.. Granted, at his first game - he played terrible but that was when he played as FS.. But now LL and RD switched the positions, and it turned out to be good enough.. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
This is a good move, if not an obvious one.
Schweigert is a great contingency plan for Landry, but kudos to Blache for making the right call here and quickly. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Yeah I'm thrilled with this. Landry showed amazing range at the end of last season. And it seems strange to say it, but I thought he was just as effective as ST was in that free safety spot. ST laid down the wood with big hits, and of course we loved him and will never forget him. But Landry has the talent to be just as good, if not better, in that spot.
Reed is remarkably dependable for such a young player, and is becoming one of my favorites. He is a very fundamentally sound tackler and he takes the right angles to the ballcarrier. I feel very comfortable with him back there. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
this is fantastic news. i'm glad blache made the right decision and i suspect he knew all along. i'm comfortable with reed at ss and landry is the only safety we have worthy of succeeding sean.

Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Landry really seemed to thrive at FS. Good to see he'll be back there again.
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I loved his range and he did seem to get more comfortable as the season wore on. One question, now that we have a pass rush, will we still line him up 30 yards off the ball?
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
LL is so good that he could play both spots & be THE best in the nfl. His speed is off the charts & from day it was obvious he likes to hit & is fearless at the line of scrimmage. That seattle game really showed his instincts in coverage.
Blache will be able to mix it up some, especially if he's confident in Schweigert, Moore, Horton or whoever earns the backup fs spot. He can still sneak LL up to blitz now & then. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I love this decision. Landry showed a lot at the end of last season. He has the range and tenacity to scare QBs into not throwing deep and WRs into not wanting to run deep.
The way he played was strikingly similar to our fallen Pro Bowler. |

let's hope so! with him up there keeping qb's scared to throw the ball and our new de tandem keeping 'em scared not to.... this should be interesting. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I love leaving Landry at FS but I am a little worried about Doughty at the SS. While I feel that Landry is the best player at FS i think the better tandum would have been Schweigert at FS and Landry back at SS. More proven skill between those two. Just throwing it out for thought, but either way I trust Blaches decision.

Yeah I'd have to strongly disagree. Landry is a good tackler and would be good in the SS role for sure, but it doesn't make use of his greatest asset, which is his amazing range and speed. At FS, the defense can do much more from a schematic standpoint. You can send corners on blitzes, you can put Doughty up in the box, you can let Smoot and Springs play up on WRs knowing Landry is deep over the top. Plus, the FS is the guy who intercepts passes more often. With Jason Taylor and Andre Carter putting pressure on, I want Landry back there to run under the throws that guys like Eli and Romo will surely toss up there for grabs. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Well, I like what you have to say, but Landry has played SS his entire career, and the transition is more difficult then most of us realize. I know he played great at the end of the season, especially in the playoff game, and I really do hope I am wrong but I won't be suprised if Blache tinkers with this by midseason.

Yeah I have no idea why you'd be nervous about a "transition", because there is no transition. He played FS during that very stretch you mentioned and did quite well. Seems to me he already made the transition very effectively. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
He seemed to make the transition fine last year. I think he can handle it.
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Um.....I told you so (as my own hand reaches to pat my own back).

And he played free safety in college, at least his senior season and was projected as a FS in this league. That said, he is also a terrific blitzer. He's just gotta stop hitting guys in the head. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I like Landry at FS but im not sold on doughty being SS. I think he is overatteed from what he did in 5 games. Hopefully Schweigert, Moore or Horton challenge him for the SS spot.
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I'm pretty confident in Doughty and he's actually one of the players I'm looking forward to seeing this year. He was solid last year and from all accounts he's worked his tail off this offseason.

I thought Reed played OK. But he's now got that valuable playing experience plus a full off season so I expect good things from him this year. I know I'm rooting for him. |

I wouldn't mind seeing Blache move Landry closer to the line to better support the run while counting on the improved pass rush to take away big play opportunities.

exactly. i like stuart as a contigency plan b/c of his starting experience, but i don't trust him as a full time starter. he gets burned too often by pump fakes and double moves. for the record, so did landry and doughty last year. but they're young and showed they learned. stuart is in his fifth year and needs to get over that. having said that, though, he is talented and i don't doubt he will improve under jerry gray's guidance. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Landry/Doughty easily had their worse game against Dallas (first one) last year. But they both showed steady improvement and by the end of the year I thought Doughty looked good enough to earn the job for this season. Nothing needs to be said about Landry because it's already been said, the kid impressed enough last season to know he was an excellent pick for us and he's going to be the future of that secondary.
I'm glad Blache made this move too, Doughty and Landry deserve to know this, especially Doughty. I look for him to continue to improve this season as well, he's only going to get better with more playing time. Schweigart is nice depth back there as well, but I hope one of the two starters don't get hurt because I don't have much confidence in him. |

Thank you!!! I kept reading that LL would somehow have to transition to FS - how can anybody forget what he did at LSU? The opposing teams wouldn't even throw deep against LSU because Landry was back there roaming at FS just waiting to pick off a pass. The guy will be an interception Hall of Famer. I think Blache is showing faith in Doughty and it will pay off. He showed impressive instincts last year getting to the ball and taking good angles, which can make up for whatever speed he might lack. Plus, teammates have talked about his work ethic and his phenom strength. I think it was Cooley who said Reed might be the strongest guy on the team. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
This is the smart move, and the right one. Schweigert adds great depth, and Reed was solid after Sean passed away. What Reed lacks in speed and athleticism he mostly makes up for in toughness and smarts. Best case he develops into an unspectacular but reliable starter for us for a while. Given his son's medical situation and then having to fill in for our slain best player, you know he takes nothing for granted and is all in as far as heart is concerned. That says a lot. I'm pulling for him.

Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I'm happy to see this, Reed did a good job at replacing ST and all the pressures that came with it. I hope he has a terrific year.
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Why do people keep saying reed did a good job at replacing ST? He didnt replace him at all if anything Landry did good replacing ST while Reed did good replacing landry
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Whatever you want to call it Reed did a good job when he got pushed into the starting lineup. :)
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Reed was a stud last year to play on the high level he did when Taylor died. But i hope he wasn't playing over his head because with Plaxico and T.O. in our division he needs to keep playing good
|
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
REED was not a Stud by anymeans. The only reason he got close to 50 tackles was because every team tried to exploit the weakness of him being on the field... I am content with him being a reliable starter, but I can tell you he will never provide any big plays, just a run stopper if you ask me... but I would really like to know what Greg Novis has to say about this.

You hit the nail on the head with this post. I like Reed, he is an easy guy to root for, but to me he is nothing more than a special teams ace/run stopping safety. I know everyone on this board loves him and the coaches/players rave about him, but I am not ready to buy into the hype just yet. I want to watch Reed play one more season before I anoint him as a legit starting SS in this leauge. |

Thank you! This is one of the few times someone has agreed with me on this message board! Time to celebrate with a Clinton Portis world famous PINA COLADA! |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
I totally agree! Reed is nothing more than an average starter never will be. He might not even be the starter this year with Moore, Horton and Schweigert on the roster

Like ST and Clark, Landry and Reed found a comfort zone and covered the safety position well. This was especially apparent down the stretch and into the playoffs. That is not a piece of our defense that is broke. |
Re: Safeties will stay same as the end of 2007-08 season
Someone explain to me what Reed has done to deserve all of this support as a Starting caliber Safety in SIX GAMES!! Lets be realistic guys Doughty was the starter due to lack of quality depth. There was no one behind Taylor and Landry when he got injured so they were forced to play Reed. I dont know what you people see in Reed Doughty. He's nothing more than a backup. You guys are really overhyping Doughty and his skills

Well, talk to the coaches and his teammates that are high on him. They didn't look to replace him this offseason, that says something. |

Right now those guys are even bigger unknowns than Doughty. |
