Who is the next Redskin to go to the HOF?

Now that the very deserving Art Monk and Darrell Green are in who's the next Redskin bound for the Hall of Fame?

Does Jim Lachey have a shot? Will another Hog make it? I know there are guys here much better suited to make that call and would like to hear what you guys think.

I think the next two would be Grimm and Bruce Smith.

I would love to see Dave Butz, Jacoby, or Mosely get some recognition.

Joe Jacoby and Russ Grimm are probably the obvious choices

I'm not going to count Bruce Smith (and similar choices) because I don't necessarily think of him as a Redskin when looking at his career as a whole.

How about Brian Mitchell?

i agree with you about bruce smith, he's a bill, not a skin. it will be the same with jason taylor. i'm glad he's on the skins but when his time comes to go to the hall he'll be a dolphin.

i not sure if mitchell should be in the hall.

Re: Who is the next Redskin to go to the HOF?

With the splash that Donte Hall made and what Devin Hester has sustained for the last few years that puts Mitchell on the outside looking in. Mitchell a much better career than Hall, but I dont think we'll see him get in. 80's players is a toss-up to me Grimm and Jacoby. With our free agent history and subsequent lack of draft picks in the mid 90's-current it is tough to single out a player that might get in since we dont have too many legitamate franchise born and bred players.

If Portis gets to the 12000 yard mark it may be him, he could get to 9000 yards and over 70 Td's this year. If he averages 1100 yds a season with 8 td's over the next 4 years in a skins uniform hes looking at 12,100 career yards and 95 Td's and he will be 30 years old at the end of it. Good numbers plus factor in one of the best backs in years in picking up the blitz, and his nose for the end-zone you have a real arguement.

Compare to Ricky Watters who is a borderline HOF that will probably never get in:
10 yrs, 10600 yds, 78 rushing td's, 4248 rec yards, and 13 rec td's.
But a negative media image and sometimes reperesented as "soft".

Shaun Alexander:
7 yrs 9400 yds, 100 td's.. soft rep, and in career purgatory right now

If Portis maintains steady numbers over the next 4 years, he would set himself apart from Watters, and even Shaun Alexander I believe.

Not my favorite redskin but I think Chris Samuels will be the next redskin.

Jacoby and Grimm are much more deserving.
Mitchell also deserves to get in.

At one point, I thought Gary Clark deserved it too.

The Squirer John Kent Cooke or Bobby Beathard. Owners and GM's get voted in.

Nice post and good argument. If Portis sustains this level of play for another 6 years he'll land extremely high up on the NFL all-time rushing list. Health is a big factor there, of course.

A ring would look good for his candidacy though!

Good point about Samuels....I was thinking which one of the current Redskins would be HOF worthy. I can see Cooley having an HOF career...I must say that sometimes he is overshadowed by the likes of Alge Crumpler (when he was in ATL), Shockey, and Jason Witten.

Re: Who is the next Redskin to go to the HOF?

I think it'd probably be Samuels if anyone.. I don't see any of the Hogs getting in, which is pretty ridiculous IMO.

Portis will probably have HOF numbers but unless he wins a couple of SB and/or wins a few rushing titles and/or makes 3-4 Pro Bowls he won't make it. When looking at RB of his 'era' the names Tomlinson, Bettis, Alexander and Barber (ugh) will be mentioned before him for the HOF.

Re: Who is the next Redskin to go to the HOF?

I don't think Samuels has any chance. His entire career he's always been outshined by at least one other tackle within the NFC each season. Samuels has never started the Pro Bowl. Between Seattle's Walter Jones and St. Louis's Orlando Pace, it's hard to say Samuels has ever been the best LT in the conference at any time.

Jonathan Ogden, Jones, and Pace all deserve it before Samuels does. I can't see it happening for him - they just don't vote that many linemen in.

Beemnseven 08-01-2008 06:00 PM

Re: Who is the next Redskin to go to the HOF?

Gary Clark.

He has more receptions, yardage, and touchdowns than Lynn Swann and John Stallworth who were both recently voted in.

Not only that, Peter King, the man who for years denied the vote for Art Monk until he came to his senses, always said that as a beat reporter for the NY Giants, their biggest concern was Gary Clark.

Clark also has more receptions than Hall of Famers Don Maynard, Raymond Berry, and Fred Biletnikoff. And has more yardage than Lance Alworth, Paul Warfield, and Raymond Berry.

Gary Clark deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Re: Who is the next Redskin to go to the HOF?

I think Grimm, Jacoby and Clark are all deserving. And I think at least two of those three will eventually get in.

I believe Chris Samuels will always get consideration, but unless the Skins secure at least one Super Bowl win before he retires, I don't see him making it in. And while he has been very steady and consistent throughout his career, I wouldn't consider him dominant. An all-time Redskins great, yes. No question about it. But an all-time great offensive lineman, not really. For an offensive lineman to get inducted, he must truly be special and dominant throughout his career.

Without making a case for him, I could also see Jim Lachey making it.

I suppose that if we win the Superbowl because of an oustanding performance of Jason Taylor, we will consider him as a Redskins HOF!

Lachey will get in, but he won't be next. The rest of the original hogs will be inducted before Lachey will be. Samuels is a 50/50 proposition, but if he did make it, it won't be for awhile. I might be a grandpa by the time that happens.

Re: Who is the next Redskin to go to the HOF?

Grimm or Jacoby but I still think that is another 5-10 years away. As far as the guys who are still currently playing I think it will be Samuels. If Sean have lived I see no reason why he would not have been a member of the HOF.

When Bruce Smith goes in he will go as a Bill as he should.

I agree with most of what you say but he has a chance because 10 years from now when it's time for HOF consideration, The voters are going to see 8+ straight probowls and remember the hype.

Too early to say. If Cooley's career ended right now there's no way he gets in. Ditto for Samuels.

As far as current Redskins, or those of the last 10 years or so, since there haven't been any championships, I'd say you'd have to be absolute dynamite to get in the Hall. As far as I can tell, we haven't had those players.

Tomlinson, Bettis, and Barber, are in a different class than Alexander. Looking back ALexander will have Terrell Davis type numbers without the rings, and Davis probably will not make it in. Bettis and Curtis Martin might already be in around the time Portis retires. That leaves Portis on the on the bottom looking up at LT and possibly Tiki Barber. Not impossible for him to have a legitimate chance although it may take a few years. Running Back by commitee will drop some of the All-time numbers of future Rb's and the shelf life gets shorter and shorter. Rings would be essential and I agree that a Rushing title would help, but hes had the 200 yd games, the 5 td games, the highlight reel blocking in the backfield and he is for the most part media savvy all solid credentials to help him get in.
